The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me?!-Chapter 435: A Robbery That Reveals the Truth (I)
Edmund didn’t even need to try hard to get rid of the three bandits who were trying to steal Talia’s money. All he did was grab each of them by the collar and throw them out of the bakery as if they weighed nothing.
"W–Who... who the hell are you?!" one of the bandits shouted after he stumbled back to his feet. His face twisted with anger, and anyone could see he wanted to chop Edmund’s head off right then and there.
But the Lycan King remained completely calm, almost bored, even. When he turned his head slightly, he noticed a patrol soldier hiding behind a large tree outside.
He frowned. Why was that soldier just standing there, doing nothing, while bandits were robbing the bakery?
Before Edmund could say a word, the soldier slowly stepped back... and then ran for his life.
Edmund let out a tired sigh. "Why do people always drag me into political problems like this?"
He then whistled twice, and the beast soldier who had been following him silently from the shadows stepped forward. "Yes, Your Majesty."
"Catch that soldier, but don’t hurt him," Edmund ordered. His eyes shifted toward the patrol guard who was running farther and farther away. Still, it would be impossible for him to escape the beast soldier.
Edmund opened the bakery door again. "Miss Talia, do you have any rope?"
Talia—who had been gripping a metal baking tray like a weapon—jumped when Edmund suddenly spoke to her.
She dropped the tray and nodded quickly. "Y-Yes, I have rope!"
While Edmund was talking to Talia, the bandits tried to run away. However, they were thrown right back in front of the Lycan King by the Noctvaris soldier, who had already caught the fleeing patrol guard.
"Your Majesty, do you want me to tie them up?" he asked.
Edmund nodded. "Put them somewhere they can’t be seen from inside the bakery." He hissed when the Noctvaris soldier removed their masks. "Their faces will ruin my wife’s beautiful day."
He added, "After that, report this case to the soldiers guarding Illvaris’s border. Tell them one of their comrades has been working with bandits."
The Noctvaris soldier tried to nod, but paused for a moment. "But, Your Majesty... they probably won’t listen to a report from... the beast."
Instead of believing him, the humans might even think the beast was spreading lies to improve their reputation.
"You don’t have to worry about that," Primrose said. "They will believe you."
She had been watching everything from a distance, but finally stepped forward to see the faces of the bandits who had tried to rob her favorite bakery.
"Tell them that I and Miss Talia can testify that these bandits tried to rob her," she suggested. "They might not trust the words of a beast, but I don’t think they’ll ignore it if the Duke’s daughter is involved."
After all, most of the soldiers had watched Primrose grow up in this city, so they knew her well. Some of them would even do anything to protect her, so if they found out bandits nearly hurt her, they definitely wouldn’t stay quiet.
The soldier finally nodded and said, "Understood, Your Majesty." 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Not long after that, Primrose’s mind was suddenly filled with someone’s thoughts.
[Fuck! Why is Lady Primrose here?! The bakery hasn’t even been open that long, so I thought there would be no customers,] the patrol soldier panicked in his mind.
[And why the hell is the King of Beasts here too?! No, the real question is, why would he bother helping the owner of this bakery?!]
He grumbled in his head, [Nobles usually pretend they see nothing and mind their own business!]
Primrose turned her head toward him, studying his face for a moment. "Are you new here?"
She might have been gone from Illvaris for years, but she had never forgotten the faces of the people she grew up around. And she had definitely never seen this man before. That alone told her he was most likely a new soldier.
The soldier still didn’t answer her. Instead, he turned his gaze away, clearly unwilling to speak. In his mind, he already believed there was no point in saying anything.
[Why should I say something? I’m going to be executed after this anyway.]
Primrose frowned. His thoughts sounded too calm... too resigned, like someone who had already given up on living.
But considering he had offended the Duke’s daughter, the King of Noctvaris, and also embarrassed the King of Azmeria all at once, it was understandable that he believed there was no way out for him.
And... yeah, he was right.
[If they weren’t here, I would’ve benefited from this kind of chaos,] he thought. [Besides, if they want to blame someone, they should blame the King of Azmeria. Why did he let the bandits enter our territory?]
Primrose’s frown deepened. What did he mean by the King of Azmeria "letting" the bandits enter the kingdom’s territory?
Did he mean the king failed to protect his borders? Or... did he mean it literally; that the King of Azmeria allowed these bandits to pass through Azmeria and enter Illvaris?
"Husband," Primrose said, her eyes still fixed on the soldier who refused to answer her. "Can we talk to him alone?"
"Yes," Edmund replied without hesitation.
Even though Primrose didn’t explain the reason, Edmund was sure she must have heard something suspicious in the soldier’s mind, so she wanted to dig more informations from him.
Edmund quickly asked Talia for an empty room. She let them use the storage room in the back while she waited outside for the other soldiers to arrive and arrest the bandits.
Since her bakery had turned into chaos because of this whole incident, she finally decided to close it for the day.
"You really ruined my day," Primrose said sharply as she stepped into the storage room.
Edmund shoved the soldier inside, clearly irritated that this man had soured his wife’s mood.
"I’ll ask you again, so answer me properly." Primrose waited until Edmund forced the soldier into a chair before she spoke. "Are you a new soldier?"
The soldier remained silent, still convinced he would die soon, whether he answered or not.
"Alright then." Primrose let out a tired sigh. "Your words aren’t very useful anyway."
