Chapter 462: Seeing the Lycan King with Open Eyes

Primrose didn’t talk much in the carriage, and Edmund was the same. After spending the whole day meeting fake nobles, they were both tired. Right now, they just wanted some quiet time while staying close to each other.

Primrose rested her head against the carriage wall, watching the view outside through the window. Edmund gently massaged her sore feet, knowing how much walking she had done that day.

As soon as the horse carriage entered the territory of Illvaris City, Primrose could see how brightly the city was. Lanterns lit up the streets, casting a warm glow everywhere. Soft music from street performers drifted through the air, filling the city with life.

The smell of food spread around them. Smoke rose from stalls where meat and corn were being grilled, making the cold night feel a little warmer.

But the food wasn’t being sold. The vendors were giving it away for free to everyone because Lazarus had paid for all of it, saying that if there was a birthday banquet in the palace or his manor, then the people of Illvaris should celebrate too.

His actions were not only loved by the people of Illvaris, but they also made the merchants happy because their sales increased rapidly.

Lazarus usually did this kind of thing three times a year; for the king’s birthday, his own birthday, and Primrose’s birthday. And because her birthday fell on the same day as Iriana’s death, the festival was always held on a larger scale, with plenty of high-quality meat given out throughout the day.

That was probably why the people of Illvaris truly cared for Primrose. "That’s Lady Primrose!"

"Lady Primrose, you’re already back from the palace?!"

"Lady Primrose, we made apple pies! Would you like to join us?!"

"She’s with her husband."

They began whispering when they remembered that Edmund was in the same carriage as Primrose. However, Primrose could still hear their whispers because they were also thinking the same things in their minds.

"Didn’t the Lycan King save Miss Talia a few days ago?"

"Yes, I heard he chased away the bandits who tried to rob Miss Talia’s bakery. She would have been in real trouble if they had taken her money and destroyed the shop again."

"Thank goodness the Lycan King was there."

"So... maybe he’s not that bad after all."

Almost everyone in Illvaris had visited Talia’s bakery at least once, so it was no surprise that the news spread so fast.

This was exactly why Primrose had asked Edmund to help Talia that day. She wanted everyone to see that her husband was not as terrible as they believed.

"We... probably should invite him too, right? I mean, what’s the worst thing he could do? Bite our necks off?"

The street immediately fell silent after those words. Theoretically, Edmund was indeed capable of biting their necks off, but of course, her sweet husband would never do something like that to them.

"L-Lady Primrose, your husband is welcome too, if he wishes," one of the townspeople said, clearly nervous.

Deep down, they also felt guilty because when Primrose had returned to Illvaris a few days earlier, they hadn’t welcomed her as warmly as they should have.

Primrose would be lying if she said she didn’t feel sad because of their behavior. However, she could also understand that they were simply shocked, and that reaction was normal.

Therefore, maybe she could give them another chance tonight if her husband wanted to. After all, they had spent the whole day socializing, and those fake nobles were exhausting, like vampires slowly draining their energy.

"Do you... want to greet them?" Primrose asked Edmund softly, a little unsure. "This isn’t anything formal, so you don’t have to if you’re tired."

Edmund didn’t answer right away, but he opened the carriage door. "The night is still long, my wife."

Primrose fell silent for a moment, looking at him in disbelief while also feeling relieved. Edmund, on the other hand, smiled at her, thinking, [They don’t look as fake as the nobles, and... the food looks delicious as well.]

A smile slowly formed on her face, and she threw herself at him, hugging him for a moment. Edmund hugged her back, gently patting her back as he whispered, "It’s alright. Maybe they won’t give you too much trouble."

After releasing their embrace, Edmund stepped down first so he could help his wife out of the carriage.

The people around them fell silent because this was the first time they had ever seen the lycan king’s face. His tall, broad figure looked frightening at first, but the way he looked at his wife held no threat at all.

His eyes were calm and warm. He was so gentle, it was almost hard to believe he was the same man everyone feared.

"I’m sorry I didn’t properly introduce my husband when I came here a few days ago." Primrose looked at them one by one, smiling softly. The lantern light made her face look gentle and warm.

"I know there are many rumors about beastkin, and I won’t say that all of them are lies." Primrose took a deep breath before continuing, "But aren’t humans the same? There are people who do terrible things, and there are also people who share kindness with the world.

"So, my dear people, if you’re willing, please judge my husband by what you see with your own eyes, not by rumors that no one can truly prove."

She then turned slightly and reached for Edmund’s hand, her fingers tightening just a little, as if drawing strength from his presence.

"This is my husband," Primrose said gently. "King Edmund of Noctvaris."

Edmund stepped forward at her side. He didn’t raise his voice, nor did he try to look impressive. He simply stood there, letting the people see him as he was.

For a moment, no one spoke. The silence was heavy, filled with doubt, fear, and curiosity all at once. But then, slowly, some of them noticed the way he angled his body toward Primrose, as if shielding her without even thinking about it. Others saw how his hand remained linked with hers.

He was not smiling, but neither did he look cruel. His eyes were clear, and when he lowered his head slightly in greeting, it was done with respect.

"I do not ask for blind trust," Edmund said at last. "Only the chance to prove myself through my actions."

He continued, "And I promise you, I will never harm those who treat my wife with such kindness and gentleness."
