The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me?!-Chapter 474: A Father Who Never Teaches His Son To Lie
"I’m not saying you’re a beast, but I think you may have received one of their gifts, like healing," Dr. Celdric said. "Some humans also have abilities like this, but theirs usually come from magic. I’m still not sure what kind of magic you have, but it seems healing is one of them."
Actually, she thought that the burst of magical energy in her body was related to her mind-reading ability, but after thinking for a while, she realized there wasn’t any significant change in her ability to read people’s thoughts.
Well, she hadn’t tried controlling someone’s mind yet, but it still didn’t feel like the right type of magic.
So... did this mean she really had a healing ability now?
"In that case... it means my pregnancy will also become stronger, right?" Primrose asked seriously.
For the past few months since her pregnancy began, she had constantly worried that something bad might happen to her baby. But in the end, she actually received a gift that could strengthen her womb.
"Yes, Your Majesty." Dr. Celdric smiled at her. "From now on, your body can become a great vessel to give nutrients to your baby. You don’t even need His Majesty’s help anymore."
Edmund’s eye twitched slightly. [But I still want to.]
Even though he was a bit disappointed that his "kiss time" might decrease—despite his wife reassuring him earlier—he still felt relieved. At least now, he no longer had to live in constant fear of losing either of them.
Primrose let out a soft sigh of relief. She gently placed her hands on her belly and whispered, "Now you don’t have to worry about hurting me anymore." Then she added lovingly, "My baby, you can take as much nourishment from me as you want."
For some reason, she felt the pulse in her belly speed up for a moment, as if her baby wanted to tell her that it was excited too.
"And I don’t think you need any medicine either for now, Your Majesty," Dr. Celdric said with a soft laugh. "But I can give you some aromatherapy so you won’t feel stressed."
Primrose only nodded in response, because now all of her focus was on her baby.
Edmund then placed his hand over hers and hugged her again from behind. He spoke in his mind, [You did great, my wife. I’m proud of you.]
Primrose’s lips curved up even more when she heard Edmund’s words. She held his hand tightly and didn’t let go for a while.
After making sure that Primrose would be alright, the doctors finally left the room. Edmund also had to leave again because he didn’t want Lazarus to be alone in Veloria County.
"I’ll come back as fast as I can. I promise," Edmund said as he placed some pillows behind her so she could sit more comfortably. "If anything bad happens, I’ll rush straight back to you. Okay?"
Primrose chuckled. "I know. I’m really fine." She reached out and gently stroked Edmund’s cheek. "Husband, please make sure my father returns safely."
"Of course." Edmund kissed her palm several times before moving to her cheeks and lips. "Alright, I really need to go now. Just sleep if you feel tired."
Honestly, Primrose didn’t feel tired at all, but to reassure her husband, she nodded. "I will."
Soon after, Edmund left the manor again, leaving Solene and Callen to watch over her.
In his wolf form, he carried the bag containing his clothes and ran quickly back toward Veloria County.
Just before the carriage entered Veloria territory, Edmund had already caught up and jumped beside the carriage, shocking Lazarus. "What?! You really went back to Illvaris just now?"
As soon as the coachman stopped the carriage, Lazarus opened the carriage door for his son-in-law. "Seriously, what on earth happened to you? Did something bad happen to my Rosie or what?!"
Of course Lazarus would think that, since Edmund had looked so worried earlier. The Lycan King knew he probably couldn’t deceive his father-in-law anymore, so he decided to tell him the truth.
He climbed into the carriage first, then glanced at Salem, who was now sitting beside Lazarus. Edmund didn’t say anything, but from Salem’s gaze, it seemed he was also curious about what had happened to Primrose.
After Lazarus finished listening to Edmund’s explanation, he immediately raised his hand and smacked the Lycan King’s arm several times, like a father scolding his foolish son.
"You! How dare you lie to me!" Lazarus shouted, making the carriage sway so much that they couldn’t continue their journey. "My daughter is sick and you didn’t tell me at all! I never taught you to lie!"
Honestly, Edmund sometimes felt like Lazarus treated him as if he were really his son, which he wasn’t.
"I taught myself," Edmund replied flatly.
But instead of stopping, Lazarus smacked him even harder. "Why are you answering me?!"
"Alright, alright, Father, please stop," Edmund said as he grabbed his hands. "I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to worry."
"What nonsense are you saying?! You and Rosie are the same!" Lazarus snapped. "How can you both hide such important things from me?! I told you before, I don’t care if the news is good or bad. I still want to know! Just because I’m old doesn’t mean I’ll drop dead the moment I hear something upsetting!"
Edmund pressed his lips together and finally lowered his head, feeling deeply guilty. "I know, Father. I’m really sorry for lying to you," he said. "But truly, Primrose is fine now, so you don’t have to worry about her anymore."
"You can say that because she turned out fine! But what if something bad had happened to her?!" Lazarus shouted angrily. "What if, when I returned home, my daughter was already gone, and I didn’t know anything about it because you lied to me?!"
His eyes were very red, and his hands were shaking badly. The atmosphere inside the carriage became extremely awkward and tense, to the point where Salem didn’t even dare to move.
"Father, I’m really sorry," Edmund said sincerely. "I truly won’t do something like this to you again."
"You’d better not, or I’ll separate the two of you!" Lazarus threatened.
"Father, you can’t say that!" Edmund replied dramatically. "I can’t live without seeing my wife’s face!"
Instead of responding, Lazarus turned his face away and answered only with a harsh sigh. The moment Edmund saw that, he finally understood why his wife also acted like that whenever she was angry, clearly, she got it from her father.
Edmund decided not to say anything more, since it seemed Lazarus simply needed some time to calm down. Besides, he could always use that anger later on the Duke of Veloria.
And he was right, because as soon as the carriage entered Veloria territory and a guard said, "Your Grace, you must make an appointment before meeting the Count of Veloria," Lazarus exploded at once.
"What?! An appointment? My daughter almost died after eating sugar from the Count’s factory, and you expect me to wait? Let me see him right now before I stab your eyes out with a fork!"
The guard froze, his face turning pale. He looked like he wanted to argue, but after hearing Lazarus’s threat, he quickly changed his mind. Without saying anything else, he bowed and hurriedly ordered the other guards to open the gate.
The carriage rolled forward into the Count’s factory. Veloria County looked peaceful on the surface, but now that Lazarus knew the truth, the beauty of the place only made him angrier. How could something so dangerous be hidden in such a calm place?
When the carriage stopped, Lazarus immediately jumped down and caused a huge commotion. "Where’s the Count?! Let me see his face right now!"
The factory manager rushed forward, looking both confused and extremely worried, because the Duke of Illvaris was suddenly shouting right in front of the factory gates. "Y-Your Grace, please calm down. What happened?"
While Lazarus was still making a scene, Edmund glanced toward Salem, who was still sitting inside the carriage. "Can you do me a favor?"
Without waiting for Salem to respond, Edmund continued, "I know you can move quickly in your beast form, so I want you to scout this place. But remember, if you sense danger, you must leave immediately."
"You don’t have to remind me of that, Your Majesty," Salem replied with a small smile. "I was already planning to do that."
After all, he had come here secretly in the first place, even though in the end, he realized Edmund had noticed him from the very beginning.
Salem slipped out of the carriage and walked away from the crowd so no one would notice him. A moment later, his body shrank and shifted, turning into a honey badger with dark fur and sharp eyes. He landed lightly on the ground, then dashed off toward the back of the factory.
He slipped under carts, past storage crates, and into narrow gaps between the buildings. Workers were busy moving sacks of sugar, talking to each other without realizing they were being watched.
