Standing near Lia and Rusak, Lance said while staring at the demon. "If my magic can fight this thing’s corruption, then I’ll use it to my advantage."

"Lance, wait!" Lia called, but he was already moving.

With a burst of speed, he launched himself forward, charging straight at the demon at breaking speed.

The demon’s grotesque grin widened, its sunken, bulbous eyes flickering with amusement as if accepting his challenge. It spread its bony wings, its long, clawed hands rising to greet him, and then it unleashed its rot once more.

A thick cloud of black ash erupted from its body, expanding outward like a poisonous mist as it had done several times to create space between itself and its attackers. The very air itself seemed to rot in its wake, but Lance didn’t show any signs of slowing down a single bit.

The moment he felt the rot touch his skin, he countered it with his magic, burning away the corruption before it could spread. It hurt, like fire scorching his flesh continuously, but he grit his teeth and pushed through without thinking it too deep.

The demon lashed out with one of its unnaturally long arms, its talons sharp enough to tear through flesh and bone. Lance barely ducked in time because his sight was affected by the rot and mist, feeling the wind from the swing rush past his head.

Using the opening, he swung his sword, aiming for the demon’s torso.

Clang!

The moment his blade made contact, the rot filled fluid for blood spread onto the metal, and within seconds, his sword rusted and crumbled apart in his hands.

Lance didn’t even flinch.

Without missing a beat, he clenched his fists and pushed through with his bare hands.

His attacks were fast, quicker than the demon could keep up with from such close range. The force of his attacks caused the demon to recoil in shock. It certainly wasn’t used to anyone willingly getting close to it. It would even make sense that for as long as it had existed, everything that approached it died in seconds, withered away by its corruptive power. But this human, this mortal, was standing in front of it, unafraid, undeterred, with no fear of losing his life.

Lance didn’t care for it, and didn’t give it time to process. He landed a particularly powerful punch across its face, hard on ts chin. The impact sent a sickening crack through the air. The demon staggered, its jaw bending unnaturally before snapping back into place.

Lance followed up with another blow, this time to its ribs. His fist sank into its sickly flesh, sending the demon skidding backward. The ground cracked beneath its feet as it struggled to balance itself.

The goo from its body corroded his fist at an even faster pace, spreading quickly up his arm and wherever the fluid had touched, but without looking at it or seeming to care too much, Lance healed himself, ready to go in again.

Then, something strange happened, for the first time, the demon appeared to look afraid, or at least, shocked.

Seeing this, Lance smirked, realising what the situation was. ’So, you’re not used to close-range fights.’

The demon shrieked, spreading its wings and attempting to take flight, but Lance didn’t let it. It never even tried to fly away before, and now it wanted to escape. He rushed forward, grabbed onto one of its wings, and yanked it downward with all his strength.

The demon screeched in agony as it crashed back into the ground.

The force of the impact left a crater, dust and debris rising into the air.

Lance didn’t stop. He raised his fist and brought it down onto the demon’s face, hammering its skull into the dirt. Again. And again. And again. Overwhelming it with sheer force and speed.

The demon thrashed, its claws raking against Lance’s chest, tearing through his armor and into his skin, but before the rot could spread, he healed himself mid-fight and continued his assault, managing to wrap his hands around one of its arms and snapping it.

With a burst of strength, the demon threw him off, staggering to its feet, its entire body twitching and convulsing. It glared at him with raw fury, its wings folding inward protectively.

Lance exhaled sharply, calming himself for another attack.

He reached behind his waist and drew the twin daggers that had remained untouched during the battle, compressing his stance, readying to strike quick and perhaps to end the fight there.

The demon saw the gleaming blades and roared in defiance. It lunged at him, its wings snapping open like shields.

Lance burst forward, slipping past the demon’s defenses almost in an instant, still too fast for the demon to react to, though, now, its wings managed to react to some extent to protect itself. Regardless, the first dagger found its mark, slashing through the membrane of its wing at just the right angle to sink through.

The demon shrieked in pain, just before the second dagger sank into its abdomen, twisting deep before being yanked free, black, rotted blood spilling from its gut, sizzling against the ground.

The demon shook Lance off its body, and then swung wildly, trying to strike him, but Lance ducked under its arm and drove his knee into its gut.

As the demon bent forward in pain, he saw his chance. With a flick of his wrist, he sent his dagger flying straight into it’s left eye.

The blade pierced through the socket, sinking deep into its skull.

The demon screamed, clutching at its face, its free eye wide in terror, looking even more monstrous at that moment.

If it could link its eyes, it would have only taken that much for Lance to disappear from where he stood onto its back, grabbing a short knife from his shin and stabbing it into the demon’s second eye. Continue reading on novelbuddy

Then, Lance grabbed the demon’s head with both hands, applying pressure, and ripped it clean off, yanking it with all his strength after he twisted it around in a violent motion.

A grotesque tearing sound filled the air as black blood sprayed in every direction. The demon’s body collapsed lifelessly, its wings curling inward, as if trying to protect itself even in death. The blackened blood covered Lance, sizzling his skin as he corroded rapidly, but he immediately used his magic ability to counter it.

The world seemed to pause, as for a moment, silence reigned, then, the remaining warriors let out a victorious roar.

Lance exhaled slowly, letting the adrenaline leave his body. His hands trembled softly, but he stood tall. This would be the time for his body to scream I pain after such an ordeal, but having used his ability on himself more than fifteen times in every minute after he started the fight with the demon, he was in peak condition. He turned to see his comrades, battered, bloody, but alive.

Rikka, still watching in awe, released her breath, looking at Lance with an unreadable expression, perfectly concealed. Zarra, Lia, and Rynne shared the same look of awe, but joy and pride was evident in their faces.

Rusak crossed his arms, grinning. "Heh. Looks like you had some fun."

Lance scoffed, wiping demon blood from his bare skin before healing himself again. "I wouldn’t refer to it as that, but yeah. Loads."

After such a battle, Lance could appreciate how far he had come, but then again, it wasn’t enough… but for this enemy, it was. It had been powerful. But in the end, it had been no match for him.

"We should gather the bodies."
