Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Temptation

Since Mrs. Xu Sr. hadn’t left yet, Nanny Chang held Lin Youning and sat in the small Warm Pavilion. The temple on the mountain was inherently quiet, and Nanny Chang felt a pang of distress seeing the little one sitting there silently.

Lin Youning also noticed Nanny Chang’s expression and smiled bitterly in her heart. She had long been used to such silence.

In her past life, carrying such a reputation, didn’t she live well enough?

"Miss, should I call Shanmoi and Tingnan inside to play string games with Miss?" Nanny Chang tentatively asked.

Truly treating her like a child.

But now she is just a five-year-old child.

Lin Youning didn’t know how to play that. She glanced outside, "Nanny, I haven’t seen the fish that change color yet."

In her past life, she never stepped outdoors. Now that she’s living again, she must do right by herself.

Not to mention the current opportunity; immersing herself in past memories is just futile sadness.

"The cold air on the mountain is quite strong, Miss’s body just barely recovered..."

Lin Youning noticed Nanny Chang’s hesitation, "Nanny, just for a short while, see it and then return."

"Then... alright." With such a little one, once she started to act spoiled, Nanny Chang’s heart softened.

Still, she went to seek Mrs. Gu Sr.’s permission. Once approved, Nanny Chang took Shanmoi and Tingnan and carried Lin Youning to the front hall.

Mrs. Gao, residing in the adjacent guest room, looked at her daughter standing before her, head lowered, with a darkened face. Originally, this visit to Pure Path Temple was to use this opportunity to gloss over the mistake her daughter made that day, but who would’ve thought it backfired; it would’ve been better not to come.

"Sister Ru, I won’t ask if you understand your mistake. You’re already grown with your own opinions. You scared Lin. How can you pretend not to know about this?" Mrs. Gao genuinely wished to slap her daughter to make her realize.

It would save her from always doing brainless things.

If the young girl hadn’t been seen today, it might’ve been feasible to pretend not to know about last night’s incident. Yet, right after the incident last night, her daughter didn’t restrain herself and caused another fuss, getting slapped by a servant.

Saying such things was tantamount to accusing the Duke Mansion of having no propriety or manners!

Mrs. Gao felt physically pained just thinking about it.

She’d been smart her whole life but raised such a thoughtless daughter. How could Mrs. Gao not feel disappointed?

"Enough, you go. If you still wish to marry into the Marquis Mansion and be valued by them, you know what you should do." Mrs. Gao didn’t want to say more, only feeling head-ached, waving her hand.

Kong Tianru bit her lip and withdrew, reaching the courtyard, seeing Hongzhi curled up in the corner. Angrily, she signaled to Yinchun beside her, then walked away briskly.

Yinchun paused and fell behind a few steps, out of Mrs. Gao’s courtyard, then twisted Hongzhi’s arm. Hongzhi cried in pain but dared not make a sound, only stopping after a few twists.

"From now on, be smarter, and don’t provoke Miss’s anger again." Throwing these words, Yinchun then caught up with her master.

Hongzhi didn’t dare to say more either, wiping her tears with her sleeve and following along with small steps.

Kong Tianru, mood sour all the way, arrived at the front hall. Her eyes immediately spotted the small figure by the pond in the front hall. Her chest tightened, and she strode over.

Pianqiu advised from beside, "Miss, let’s just go back."

Madam had just finished instructing. Miss was about to provoke Miss Lin again; how could this be acceptable? Ultimately, it’s they, the servants, who’ll be punished.

"Sister Ning is sick, and it’s because of me she got sick. How could I not go and check?" Kong Tianru worried about her affairs. Seeing Lin Youning only accompanied by a few servants, how could she miss this opportunity?

Before she finished speaking, she had taken several large steps to Lin Youning’s back.

"Sister Ning is watching fish?" Kong Tianru approached with a friendly demeanor.

Nanny Chang discreetly stepped forward to greet and simultaneously blocked the way, "Nanny greets Miss Kong."

Kong Tianru was somewhat displeased at being interrupted. She could see clearly that this nanny was deliberately blocking her path, yet she remained expressionless, "So it’s Nanny Chang from beside the old Madam."

Nanny Chang avoided half of Kong Tianru’s courtesy, "I’m merely a servant, not worthy of Miss Kong’s courtesy."

"Nanny is from beside the old Madam, having served her for many years. Tianru, being just a junior, Nanny certainly deserves this courtesy." Kong Tianru thus elevated Nanny Chang, yet did not receive a warm response.

Kong Tianru didn’t mind, her gaze landing on Lin Youning, who turned to size her up as well.

That small face could already reveal some beauty; who knows how stunning she’d become in the future. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Dressed in a cyan silk dress, it accentuated her skin like warm jade, with a pair of apricot eyes seemingly holding water; facing them felt almost like being melted.

Disregarding appearance, even solely this pair of eyes could incite jealousy, let alone on a five-year-old child.

What further fueled Kong Tianru’s jealousy was knowing this child would be a woman who’d compete for her future husband’s affections.

Kong Tianru took a deep breath, suppressing her jealousy. She thought she hid it well, unaware everyone present noticed that fleeting sharp gaze on Lin Youning.

Nanny Chang furrowed her brow, just about to speak.

Kong Tianru had already spoken, "Sister Ning, how about Sister Ru takes you for a walk over there?"
