Tae-seo entered the house, rubbing his swollen belly as he settled onto the couch. He had just come back from the hospital, where he had received some important news—but all he could clearly remember was the rib restaurant. Sitting across from him, Kang Se-heon watched as Tae-seo gave him a thumbs-up.

“That place was really good.”

“You were eating so fast, I thought you wouldn’t even taste the ribs.”

“They kept melting in my mouth, so I couldn’t help it. Not my fault.”

“Guess it’s my fault for taking you there.”

Tae-seo’s satisfied expression made Se-heon smile, as if to say, whatever, it doesn’t matter. But as that smile faded, Se-heon studied Tae-seo’s face more closely.

Hearing that Tae-seo was pregnant didn’t suddenly change how he looked at him. But he could tell that his face looked healthier than before. It wasn’t that he had gained weight, but his skin was smoother, glowing in a way that suggested he had been eating and sleeping well.

Even when they were at the hotel eating hamburgers, he hadn’t looked this good.

“Guess I really have been feeding you well.”

“That was your plan all along...”

“No. Absolutely not.”

Se-heon cut him off before Tae-seo could say anything else—just like he had done at the hospital. He wanted to make it clear that he hadn’t been treating Tae-seo well just because of the pregnancy.

“Then why are you being so nice?”

“I just put an extra spoon on the table when I made my own meal, that’s all.”

Tae-seo’s eyes narrowed slightly. For something so insignificant, Se-heon sure paid a lot of attention to what he liked to eat, even keeping track of the foods he normally avoided in the morning.

“Well, either way, I’ve been eating well. I barely had an appetite before.”

Back then, he never felt like eating in the morning, and by evening, he was too tired to enjoy food by himself. But in Se-heon’s house, he actually looked forward to dinner every day. Now he understood why.

“It’s probably because of Alpha pheromones.”

He had done a quick search on the way home and shared what he had learned. When an Omega was pregnant, their body instinctively concealed their own pheromones to protect the baby while becoming more sensitive to those of others. More specifically, an Omega would develop an aversion to the pheromones of Alphas who weren’t the baby’s father.

That reaction could manifest as a loss of appetite, nausea, or general discomfort. On the other hand, an Omega needed their Alpha’s pheromones to stabilize. Their body perceived the Alpha’s scent as a source of safety and comfort.

“I couldn’t eat properly before, but I think I ate well because of your pheromones, Se-heon hyung. I even had breakfast, right?”

The brunch they had over the weekend was delicious, and for the past few days, Se-heon had been staying home from work, so they had shared meals together. It wasn’t just dinner—everything had tasted good when he ate with him.

Realizing all of this, Tae-seo mumbled, “So that’s why...” as if it were fascinating. Watching him, Se-heon abruptly changed the subject.

“So, what are you going to do now?”

The teasing was over. Tae-seo, who had been chattering just moments ago, clamped his mouth shut.

“...I’m going home.”

It was the most important thing to do first. He needed to tell his parents. He was legally an adult, but he hadn’t fully left their care yet. More than anything, they were the people who worried about him the most. He believed they had the right to know first.

He still hadn’t decided whether he would have the baby or not.

“I’ll take you.”

At Tae-seo’s decision, Se-heon stood up immediately—so quickly that Tae-seo was caught off guard.

“Right now?”

“No reason to delay.”

Watching Se-heon grab his car keys, Tae-seo bit his lower lip and reluctantly got up. No reason to delay? Shouldn’t he at least tell him to stay a little longer? Or ask what he planned to say when he got there?

Maybe it was just his feelings getting in the way, but Tae-seo refused to look at Se-heon the entire ride.

“Go on.”

Se-heon didn’t even turn off the engine. He simply spoke, waiting for Tae-seo to get out.

Tae-seo hesitated before finally opening the door. Just because he was leaving Se-heon’s house didn’t mean they wouldn’t see each other again, but still, a sense of disappointment lingered.

How could he say goodbye so casually, knowing Tae-seo was carrying his child? The mixture of disappointment and sadness quickly morphed into frustration.

“I’m going.”

Without looking back, Tae-seo stepped out of the car and shut the door hard. He didn’t glance at Se-heon as he walked up to the front door and punched in the passcode.

The heavy sound of the door closing behind him made him sigh.

“Shouldn’t he at least ask if I’m planning to have the baby?”

Why was he acting like this had nothing to do with him? Even if Se-heon had asked, Tae-seo wouldn’t have known how to answer. Still, the fact that he hadn’t even brought it up left him bitter.

“I’m home.”

Tae-seo expected to be greeted by the housekeeper like usual. But as he turned around after closing the door, he nearly jumped.

“You didn’t go out today?”

His parents were standing there. He tilted his head, surprised. They were always busy, so he hadn’t expected them to be home. But the way they looked at him, as if his question was absurd, made him realize something.

Oh. Right. I ran away from home.

“I’m sorry.”

Without even taking off his shoes, Tae-seo immediately bowed. No matter what his reasons were, running away had been wrong. He felt even worse thinking about how much he must have worried them.

“Come in.”

Yoon Seok-hoon, his father, gazed at him for a moment before speaking. His voice was calmer than expected, likely because Tae-seo had already acknowledged his mistake. Seeing that he looked fine also helped put them at ease.

Tae-seo sat down on the couch, but when his mother, Kim Mi-kyung, placed a glass of orange juice in front of him, he didn’t touch it. He wasn’t thirsty, and he didn’t really feel like drinking anything.

“Where have you been staying?”

At Kim Mi-kyung’s question, Tae-seo replied, “At a friend’s house.”

She exchanged glances with his father, and Yoon Seok-hoon cleared his throat.

He had told Kim Mi-kyung to leave Tae-seo alone, but behind her back, he had secretly called Park Han-su, one of Tae-seo’s friends, to check if he had been staying at Kang In-hyuk’s house. Meanwhile, Kim Mi-kyung had done the same by asking Han Mi-sun. The fact that Tae-seo’s answer didn’t match their assumptions caught them off guard.

They were curious about who this friend was, but there was something more urgent to address first.

“Tell us the truth. Did you cause trouble at the party?”

“Yes.”

Tae-seo didn’t try to hide it.

“Did you do it to mess with that boy, Seo Da-rae?”

“...Yes.”

Though his response was slightly delayed, he still answered honestly.

“So you knew it was wrong, but you did it anyway.”

Yoon Seok-hoon sighed. If Tae-seo had tried to deny it, he would have been disappointed. But since he admitted it, he didn’t feel the need to get angry. It wasn’t that he thought Tae-seo had done the right thing, but he understood what had driven him to act that way.

After a brief silence, Yoon Seok-hoon spoke in a cooler tone.

“No matter the reason, what you did was inexcusable. Even if nothing happened, the moment you acted with bad intentions, you set yourself on an irreversible path. Hiding behind your own feelings is nothing but cowardice.”

Tae-seo couldn’t lift his head. Each word felt like a dagger, piercing right through him.

“You understand what you need to do now, don’t you?”

“...Yes. I’ll sincerely apologize to Da-rae. And... to In-hyuk, too.”

“If they refuse to forgive you, don’t complain. You brought this upon yourself. Apologize as many times as it takes. If they ask you to kneel, then kneel.”

Yoon Seok-hoon firmly emphasized the importance of Tae-seo’s apology. Just because nothing had happened didn’t mean the issue could be ignored.

He had raised his son with love and care, but if kneeling before someone was the price for forgiveness, then so be it.

If that was the path to redemption, then he should walk it.

“I will.”

Seeing Tae-seo’s sincere remorse, Yoon Seok-hoon didn’t push the matter any further.

“Are you tired?”

“Mm... a little.”

“Go upstairs and rest.”

Tae-seo nodded, meeting the gazes of both his father and Kim Mi-kyung in turn.

Looking at them now, he realized he had spent so much time feeling wronged, believing he had been forced to bear the burden of someone else’s sins. But instead of dwelling on his own resentment, he should have been paying attention to the people who had raised him.

They had carried the weight of responsibility for bringing him into the world, never once turning away. They had tried to guide him onto the right path, even when he strayed.

Just as he was rising from the couch, twisting his body halfway to stand, his father spoke again.

“Come home regularly. We’re not the kind of heartless parents who’d let their son starve just because he made a mistake.”

Yoon Seok-hoon cleared his throat as he said it, his words softer than before.

A small smile appeared on Tae-seo’s lips.

Back in his room, Tae-seo threw himself onto his bed for the first time in what felt like forever.

The familiar comfort of his mattress wrapped around him, and he buried his face into it for a moment before turning his head to the side. Things had gone well with his parents, but strangely, his chest still felt heavy.

Maybe it was because he hadn’t told them about the pregnancy yet?

No, that wasn’t it.

He didn’t even have to think hard to know the real reason.

“Kang Se-heon.”

The thought of the man who had so casually sent him home without a second glance soured his mood.

Tae-seo pressed his face into the pillow a few times before finally shutting his eyes. There was no point dwelling on Se-heon—sleep was a better option.

Tae-seo rubbed his eyes as he woke from his nap, slowly pushing himself upright. He had no idea how much time had passed.

Glancing at the clock, then toward the window, he saw that the curtains were drawn, hiding the outside world from view.

He climbed off the bed and shuffled toward the window, pulling the curtains aside. The sky outside had darkened—it was already evening.

Did my parents leave for the hotel?

Tilting his head, Tae-seo turned away, only to freeze mid-step.

Something familiar caught his eye.

A car.

A very familiar car parked outside.

His breath hitched as he squinted to get a better look.

No way.

Doubt creeping in, Tae-seo rushed out of his room.

Even as he hurried down the stairs, he kept second-guessing himself.

It’s just a car. There are plenty of identical cars out there.

Just because it looks familiar doesn’t mean it’s his.

But the moment he stepped outside and saw the figure leaning against the hood of the car, his thoughts scattered.

His confusion was evident in his voice.

“Why are you here?”

The person who had been resting against the car’s hood slowly turned around.

Kang Se-heon.

He looked exactly the same as when he had dropped Tae-seo off earlier.

He couldn’t have been waiting here this whole time... could he?

Tae-seo’s heart wavered.

Maybe he had gone somewhere else and just come back. That would make sense. That would be better.

But Se-heon’s expression didn’t betray anything. He looked as indifferent as ever, just like when he had sent Tae-seo home.

And then he spoke.

“Thought you might not eat.”

Because he needed Alpha pheromones to eat properly.

It was practically a mutter, more of a thought spoken aloud than a statement meant for Tae-seo.

Hearing it, Tae-seo found himself unable to respond.
