Chapter 137: Lying Skills.

Ezra’s eye twitched.

And surprisingly, it wasn’t because of Kaelis.

Ezra was tired.

He had gone through too much in a single day. Too many emotions, too many things he didn’t even have time to process properly.

His secrets had slipped, things he spent years hiding now hanging in the open.

And now—

They were questioning him.

Him.

Just him.

"Captain Ezra...?" Aurien asks, clearly noticing the silence and the shift in Ezra’s presence.

Ezra takes a deep breath, then slams his hand on the wooden table. Not hard enough to break anything, but enough to make everyone pause.

"Look... save all your damn pitchforks," Ezra snaps.

It surprises most of them.

Everyone except Kaelis, who looks like he’s barely holding back a smile.

Lior also didn’t seem too affected, mostly just quietly watching.

"Excuse me?" Aamon asks, leaning back slightly.

"First of all, I was fighting for my life earlier today," Ezra continues, his voice steady but sharp. "I watched a mother get killed in front of her husband and children. I watched two little girls who looked up to me get taken. And I got poisoned before I could do anything."

’And that’s putting it lightly.’

A group of strangers.

A group of Alphas knew how to subdue him.

Cultists who kidnapped children and created Dark Ones for whatever reason.

"When I woke up, the poison was still there. It still affected my body," Ezra adds, his jaw tightening.

’And I had to rely on him again.’

Again.

For a second time, five years apart.

Ezra ended up sleeping with Kaelis again as if destiny kept making them have sex.

"And then I finally get some rest, and suddenly there are Dark Ones. And let’s not forget why we’re here in the first place. The kid I’m taking care of got taken."

His gaze locks onto Aamon.

"So my apologies for not listing every single detail that happened to me today," Ezra says, his tone edged. "But I’m not the only one who was there."

He points at Kaelis.

"—He was there too."

Kaelis’s eyes widen slightly at being dragged into it.

Ezra leans back into his seat, crossing his arms.

This side of him wasn’t new.

But not everyone had seen it.

This was the Ezra who didn’t care who was in front of him when he reached his limit. The one who would speak regardless of rank or consequence.

’I’m not in the mood for this.’

"Uh oh," Lior mutters quietly.

He’s seen this before.

Mostly, Ezra would fight with other adults in their old village.

Helios doesn’t look surprised either.

Aamon just looks tired, running a hand through his hair. "Right. That is my mistake," he says, clearing his throat. Then he turns to Kaelis. "Prince Kaelis, why didn’t you tell us—"

"What kind of kidnappers show their faces?" Kaelis cuts in, raising an eyebrow.

Ezra exhales slightly.

’Here we go.’

Based on that tone, it wasn’t just him anymore.

And for once, Ezra didn’t mind.

Kaelis was going to act as his usual obnoxious, hard-to-talk-to self.

"Anyone?" Kaelis continues, his voice calm but pointed. "What kind of people would show their faces when kidnapping? Didn’t I already say we didn’t know what they looked like? Wasn’t that enough of a hint?"

"Yes, but robes? Isn’t that..." Helios starts, but Kaelis tilts his head slightly.

"Isn’t that what?" Kaelis asks. "Should we make something out of it? They’re kidnappers who avoided us for years. We were in a dark forest. Of course, they would wear dark robes."

He shrugs lightly.

"There was nothing unusual about it unless you choose to make it something more."

"Brother Kaelis has a point," Aurien says, his tone calm. "We’re getting distracted. Their clothing doesn’t change what happened. If anything, the only detail that matters is the masks."

Aamon and Helios fall silent.

Ezra watches them.

’Good.’

"I have a question,n though." Aurien raises a hand, drawing everyone’s attention. "Not that this is something Captain Ezra or my brother can answer, but do we think it’s a coincidence that the moment Lior was taken, a random horde that wasn’t from Fleur De Lys appeared?"

That was when Ezra and Kaelis both tensed again.

Just when the conversation had moved away from the masks.

From the details they didn’t want to explain.

’I forgot he’s sharper now.’ Ezra thought, his gaze briefly shifting to Aurien.

It hadn’t even crossed Helios’ or Aamon’s mind until now.

"That’s... right," Helios says slowly, his expression turning more serious. "Thinking about it now, they disappeared almost as soon as we arrived. Captain Aamon, you said they felt endless, correct?"

"Yes," Aamon replies. "And they appeared around the same time Ricardo left."

’Ah, shit.’

Ezra felt it immediately.

They were connecting it.

And they weren’t slow about it either.

"Do you think it was them?" Aamon asks, looking between Ezra and Kaelis.

"I... don’t know," Ezra answers without hesitation. "It does seem possible, but at the same time... how? They would have had to redirect an entire horde without putting themselves at risk."

"That’s true," Aamon says, exhaling quietly. "Still, it’s something worth looking into."

"Right," Kaelis agrees easily. "We can’t ignore it, especially when they were bold enough to approach us directly."

Ezra nods as well, following Kaelis’ lead.

’Stick to that.’

"Okay then," Aamon says. "We’ll look into it. Now, one last thing I want to ask."

Ezra felt a small sense of relief settle in his chest.

’Finally.’

Aamon looks at Lior. "Lior."

"Huh?" Lior tilts his head.

"How were you not taken by those kidnappers?"

Oh.

"Oh." Lior blinks.

Ezra felt it immediately.

The tension.

The unease.

’This is bad.’

According to Ricardo, the only reason the cultists ran was because Lior had scared them off with his Sunlight Ray.

That was something no one here should know.

Not Aamon.

Not Helios.

Not even Kaelis.

Ezra didn’t know how to stop Lior if he said it.

He couldn’t interrupt.

Couldn’t redirect without making it obvious.

"Rico..." Lior starts, and Ezra’s body tenses without him realizing it.

’If he says it, I’ll—’

"...tried to kill me."

Ezra freezes.

His eyes flick to Lior.

"They didn’t bring his daughters... so he tried to kill me..." Lior says quietly, looking down.

Ezra’s chest tightens.

’...He didn’t say it.’

"And then what happened?" Aamon asks.

"They attacked Ricardo," Kaelis answers smoothly, glancing at Lior for a second before continuing. "They killed him. When they tried to take Lior, Ezra stepped in. When I arrived, they disappeared."

He pauses slightly.

"I believe they remember the last time they encountered me. I used my Sunlight Ray."

Ezra blinks.

Lior stays quiet.

Just nods slightly.

They both lied.

So naturally.

As if they had planned it.

Ezra felt something strange settle in his chest.

’...They really are similar.’

There was even a faint hint of satisfaction in both of them, like they knew they pulled it off.

"So that’s how Rico, I mean Ricardo, died," Aamon says with a sigh. "Can’t say I’m happy about it, but what did he expect? That they’d trade two for one?"

"Ezra," Helios calls.

"Yes?"

"Before we conclude this, can you confirm that what they said is accurate?"

Ezra pauses.

’...Why is he asking me?’

Lior and Kaelis already explained it.

They were in sync.

There was nothing more to add.

"Yes," Ezra says. "I can confirm it."

Helios doesn’t respond right away.

He just watches him.

His face is neutral.

Ezra notices it.

’He hasn’t smiled at all...’

It bothers him. More than he expected, especially since this was the longest he hadn’t seen Helios smile.

But he doesn’t show his unease.

"Okay," Aamon says. "Now that we know what happened, I should tell you something."

He crosses his arms.

"I sent a letter to His Majesty the moment Ezra returned poisoned."

"And?" Kaelis asks. "Did he respond?"

He doesn’t seem too concerned.

Which tells Ezra enough.

’So it’s not bad.’

After all, the king already knew about the investigation.

Aamon’s expression turns more serious.

"He did."

There’s a brief pause.

"He’s asking for you and Ezra to return to Sunspire immediately."
