The Red Dragon Just Wants To Do As It Pleases-Chapter 38 - 37: Calamity
Chapter 38: Chapter 37: Calamity
At the instant the volcano erupted, David, who had been drifting carelessly on the sea’s surface, acting fearlessly as bait to fish for Elves, suddenly perked up.
Although he suspected it was most likely the work of his own Dragon Mother, the sheer magnitude of the disturbance still compelled him to turn and glance over his shoulder.
And with that look, his eyes nearly bulged out of his head.
Ah, is all this really necessary just to deal with a few High Elf ships? Really, this is overkill, Mom!
Though his words were a humblebrag, seeing his newly acknowledged Dragon Mother stepping up for him like this filled him with a secret sense of satisfaction.
As millions of cubic meters of volcanic ash were hurled into the atmosphere, the sky darkened at a rate visible to the naked eye, as if a giant black hand had swiftly covered the sun. The sea breeze turned unusually oppressive, filled with a heavy solemnity.
The volcano before him was like an enraged monster, as if spewing not lava, but destruction itself from its maw.
Volcanic ash poured down like torrential rain, and scorching volcanic stones struck the sea surface like a meteor shower. It was as if thousands of orange hellfires were descending simultaneously, creating enormous splashes.
When lava met seawater, steam instantly billowed upwards. The surrounding waters began to boil, turning the sea scalding hot.
On the nearby High Elf warships, the High Elves watched in terror, their faces reflecting the hellish red glow of the volcano.
As the force of the volcanic eruption intensified, a huge waterspout suddenly exploded between two ships. The indescribable might of nature forced the tilting vessels apart.
"Retreat! Fall back! The Crimson Calamity has awakened!!!"
The High Elf commander, who had been full of vigor on the deck moments before, now wore an expression marked only by the fear of this natural disaster and bitter, unending regret.
It was his Greed, taking a chance by ignoring a possibility that, while not highly probable, could still occur.
A fatal possibility!
"This is the male you fancied? Tsk, he doesn’t look like much. Just another coward who only knows how to shrink back at the first sign of trouble," a Drow taunted, looking at Yevgeny, whose face was etched with disillusionment and disappointment.
"Indeed. Not even as brave as our little brother Kraidian," added a Drow Mage, seizing the opportunity to flatter one and disparage another.
"No... I’m quite cowardly myself. I only know how to rely on my sister," said a very short Drow from behind them, blushing. Her beauty and charm surpassed all the other Elves on the ship.
Hiatt was just about to encourage her brother, who had recently escaped from the cage of Spider Nest City, a place rife with filthy conspiracies and plots. Suddenly, a shadow swiftly grew larger on the deck, causing Hiatt’s pupils to constrict:
"Damn it! Jump overboard! NOW!!!"
She was already dragging Kraidian, leading the way as she leaped into the water.
Just as they hit the water, a volcanic rock the size of a house smashed the flagship they had been on into two pieces, sending all the blindly fleeing High Elves flying into the turbulent sea.
Suddenly, the tremors in the sea intensified, making David, a Dragon, feel as if he were in an old-fashioned tumble dryer.
A muffled KADOOM! sounded from the distant seabed.
Then, the entire ocean, carrying David and the remaining four High Elf ships laden with passengers, retreated towards the depths of the great sea, as if a massive maw had opened in the distant abyss to swallow the world.
Holy shit!
David, from Blue Star, instantly made a terrifying deduction.
Under the Dragon Mother’s will, the supervolcano’s sudden eruption had likely fractured the continental shelf somewhere on the seabed.
His deduction was soon confirmed by nature itself.
Just as David’s head broke the sea surface, he saw a tsunami, easily a hundred meters high, like a wall of water connecting heaven and earth, sweeping towards the shore, carrying countless shards of ice.
The entire coastal area was instantly plunged into an inferno of ice and fire.
At that moment, David could no longer be bothered to watch the High Elves’ misfortune.
Because if he stayed any longer, he feared he might become the subject of his Dragon Mother’s amusement.
He swiftly carved an arc in the icy water, using the momentum to propel himself out of the sea, then spread his wings and soared into the sky.
But he was still caught, at a speed visible to the naked eye, by the tsunami roaring up from behind at over 800 kilometers per hour, instantly feeling as if he had boarded an ocean-surface airliner.
Luckily, as he neared the coast, David rapidly paddled to the crest of the tsunami wave like a turbo-charged duck. Just as the tsunami was about to slap him onto the beach, he flew back into the sky by the skin of his teeth.
Once the still-shaken David landed again, the coast, ravaged by the tsunami, was littered with nothing but scattered boat wreckage and countless High Elves lying helter-skelter.
If he hadn’t seen some of them still heaving and gasping for breath, David would have thought this bunch of High Elves had been wiped out.
Eh, aren’t many of these Elves nobles, like those ’so-and-so fox’ types?
Since they’re nobles, I can take them and demand ransom from the High Elves, right?
Isn’t this the first pot of gold of my dragon life, right here for the taking?
At this thought, David immediately perked up, unable to suppress a mischievous, Teemo-like laugh bubbling in his throat:
"AHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHA! All of you, lie still! Lie flat, and I won’t kill you!"
At this moment, these High Elves before him weren’t Elves at all! They were Gold Coins, ripe for the picking!
"Tania! Come and gather the prisoners!"
He immediately called over Tania, the Silver Dragon, who had just arrived and was also somewhat shocked by the scene, to join him in scavenging for captives along the ravaged shoreline.
"Okay... Okay!"
David himself grabbed a few strands of seaweed uprooted by the tsunami. Then, like a farmer overjoyed at finding his field cleared of pests by rat poison, he gleefully began picking up these "long-eared rats," stacking them on his shoulder like bundles of corn cobs.
It wasn’t entirely without resistance. However, given that the Elves were already half-dead from the ordeal of ice and fire, a swift kick from David was enough to make them roll their eyes back and faint again.
Just as David picked up a somewhat shorter Elf, he suddenly felt something wasn’t quite right.
This Elf, after being washed by the seawater, had patches of black and white skin, looking like a Dalmatian with vitiligo. But upon closer inspection, she seemed somewhat familiar.
"COUGH, COUGH, COUGH, COUGH... Master... save... save my brother... please..."
"Huh? Hiatt? Didn’t you return to Spider Nest City? How did you get back so soon—"
David immediately realized this was the Drow he had kept his promise to release half a month ago. But halfway through his sentence, his eyes widened in disbelief:
Brother?
You actually have a brother?
He couldn’t help but shake Hiatt back and forth as he spoke:
"Don’t tell me... after all that effort, even risking your soul to return to Spider Nest City, it was all to find your brother?"
"Are you even a Drow anymore?"
"You’re not some High Elf spy sent to Spider Nest City, are you?"
David was utterly astonished.
Finally, Hiatt passed out from being shaken by the overly inquisitive David.
Before long, David found another unfamiliar Drow. Upon seeing the delicate and frail appearance of this individual, David’s eyes widened once more:
This is... the brother?
Unable to restrain his curiosity, David lifted a corner of this Drow’s skirt. His expression suddenly froze:
Fuck!
It really was a boy!
