Chapter 177: A Date With Lyra (II)

Gray leaned back in his chair, one hand pressed to his stomach as he tried, but failedto stop laughing.

He wiped at the corner of his eyes with his thumb.

"Pwaahahhaha!" he sucked in air for a small moment.

"Sorry, sorry... I’m done... I swear..."

He wasn’t, as another snort escaped him.

Lyra crossed her arms, turning her head sharply to the side, her cheeks burning red enough to be compared with a fire crystal.

"S-stop laughing..." she muttered, clearly mortified.

"Everyone is staring..."

Gray finally managed to calm down, exhaling slowly as his shoulders relaxed. He leaned forward again, resting his chin on his palm with his eyes fixed on her.

"You know, for someone who looks so gentle, you’re surprisingly terrifying when you get angry," he said casually, his lips curling up into a deep smile.

Lyra shot him a glare."I am not terrifying."

"Mhm," Gray replied. "Remind me never to be shameless in front of you."

Her pout deepened, but after a second, she huffed and reached for her cup, taking a small sip.

"...You deserved it," she mumbled.

Gray smiled, softer this time.

They fell into a brief, comfortable silence, the clinking of cutlery and low chatter filling the space between them.

Then Lyra suddenly stiffened.

"...Ah."

Gray noticed immediately.

"What?"

She frowned slightly, eyes unfocusing as if something had just clicked in her mind.

"I completely forgot..." she exclaimed slowly, tapping her forehead lightly, before then looking at Gray with an excited look.

"Did you hear about the inter-academy exchange?"

"Inter-academy exchange?" Gray raised an eyebrow.

"This is the first time I’m hearing about this..."

’...The other Gray probably knows about and didn’t even let a small note... that damn fucker!’ he groaned inwardly.

Lyra nodded, leaning forward again, putting her elbows on the table.

"Apparently, starting next semester, there’s going to be a full exchange program. Not just visits, as students are actually staying at the other academy for the entire second semester. Classes, dorms, training... everything."

Gray blinked once.

"...That sounds troublesome."

"It is. But that’s not even the worst part," Lyra stated seriously.

"Go on." Gray tilted his head in interest.

She hesitated for a moment, then lowered her voice slightly.

"The academy we’re exchanging with, they’re sending only their weakest students here."

Gray’s fingers paused around his cup.

"...Only the weakest?" he repeated.

Lyra nodded lighly before continuing, "And Gloria Academy is doing the opposite. We’re sending our strongest students there."

For a moment, Gray stayed silent.

Then a faint, amused breath left his lips.

"So that’s how they want to do it," he commented.

"Gather all the fangs in one den."

Lyra nodded again. "It’s obvious what they’re aiming for. Put the strongest from both sides into a single academy and see which one dominates."

"A direct comparison, huh?"

"Exactly. Gloria Academy is taking in the weaker students from both sides. And the other academy..." she paused, "...they’re gathering all the strongest students together."

Gray leaned back slightly, fingers tapping once against the table.

"So they’re stacking the deck on purpose," he muttered. "One academy becomes the proving ground. The other becomes the comparison."

"Yup," Lyra sighed.

"Whoever’s students come out on top gets to declare themselves the strongest academy. Reputation, influence, future alliances... everything hinges on it... I think."

Gray was silent for a second.

Then he waved a hand lightly, as if brushing the weight of it all aside.

"It’ll be fine," he smiled calmly.

"That’s a problem for later."

"Huh?" Lyra blinked.

He leaned forward a little, resting his elbow on the table, his tone shifting back to something lighter.

"Right now, we’re on a date. Not in a strategy meeting. If we keep talking about academies, I’ll start charging consultation fees."

"Pfft..." Lyra let out a small laugh.

"...You’re unbelievable."

"Yet here you are," he replied smoothly.

She shook her head, but the tension in her shoulders eased.

"...Alright... Just for today."

They ordered dessert soon after, simple cakes, lightly sweet, served warm.

The plates were placed between them, the scent of sugar and baked dough softening the atmosphere even more.

Gray’s eyes immediately lit up.

"Oh?" he raised an eyebrow, clearly pleased.

"They didn’t skimp."

He picked up his fork, cut a small piece of cake, and without hesitation leaned closer to Lyra’s side.

Her heart skipped.

He brought the fork up, hovering it near her lips, a grin spreading across his face.

"Say aaah..."

Lyra froze, and her cheeks flushed instantly.

"G–Gray..." she muttered, but after a second, she hesitated... then nodded lightly.

She leaned in, brushing a few loose strands of hair behind her ear, eyes closing as she parted her lips slightly, ready to take the bite...

Swish!

Instead of cake, she felt something soft press against her lips.

Her eyes snapped open.

Gray was right there... too close to her.

His lips were brushing hers, just for a brief moment, his eyes filled with unmistakable teasing amusement.

Lyra jolted back in panic.

"—?!"

Her face went completely red.

She stared at him, stunned, while Gray calmly leaned back into his seat, clearly satisfied.

"I missed," he said innocently.

Lyra’s hands flew up to her face.

"Y-you—! You—!"

Before she could finish, an elderly couple passed by their table, the woman smiling warmly as she whispered to her partner.

"...What a cute couple."

Lyra completely shut down at her words.

Her face went from red... to burning.

"C-C-CUTE—?!" she squeaked, voice jumping an octave as steam practically threatened to rise from her head.

She shot to her feet so fast her chair scraped loudly against the floor.

"I–I–I–IT’S NOT LIKE THAT—!" she blurted out, waving her arms wildly in pure panic, nearly knocking over the table.

"W-WE’RE JUST— I MEAN— WE’RE DATING, BUT I JUST—!"

The old couple had already walked past, smiling to themselves, clearly unconcerned. which somehow made it worse.

Lyra slowly realized the attention she was drawing.

She froze instantly...

Every nearby table was now looking at her.

"...Ah."

Her brain caught up a second too late.

"...I-I’m so sorry!!" she bowed rapidly toward everyone around her, voice shrinking with every word.

"Please ignore me!!!"

She practically collapsed back into her seat, pulling her hood slightly forward as if it could hide her existence. Her hands covered her face entirely.

"I want to disappear..." she muttered miserably.

Gray, meanwhile, was leaning back in his chair, resting his cheek on his knuckles, watching her while holding back his laugh.

"...We’re dating," he said calmly.

"Why are you so embarrassed?"

Lyra peeked at him through her fingers.

It took her a moment to answer.

"...Because you’re acting different," she said quietly.

Gray blinked.

"Different?" 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

She slowly lowered her hands, her face still flushed, eyes avoiding his as she twisted the edge of her sleeve between her fingers.

"You weren’t like this in this past few days," she admitted.

"You tease me now... you touch me so easily... you say things so naturally..." She swallowed.

"It keeps catching me off guard."

Her blush deepened, spreading all the way to her ears.

"I...I don’t hate it," she hurriedly added.

"It’s just... my heart doesn’t keep up."

Gray stayed silent, listening to her words.

"Huff!" Lyra took a shaky breath. Then, as if finally deciding not to run anymore, she lifted her head and met his gaze.

"I-I..." her voice trembled, but she didn’t look away.

"I just really... really love you."

The words hit him harder than any blow.

For a brief moment, Gray forgot how to breathe.

Something tight pressed against his chest, sharp and warm at the same time.

He reached across the table without hesitation, gently placing his palm over hers. His touch was steady, grounding.

Lyra stiffened slightly, then relaxed.

Gray smiled sincerely and closed his eyes for a brief second.

"I love you too, Lyra," he said warmly.

Her eyes widened, and slowly, her expression softened into a smile just as shy... and far more fragile than ever.

For a brief moment, the tea house felt strangely quiet.

"OOOOH!"

"KISS!"

"Kiss! Kiss! Kiiisss!"

The whispers, the claps, the teasing shouts burst out all at once, spilling from nearby tables like a wave that could no longer be held back.

Someone even whistled while the others laughed loudly.

Lyra froze.

Her entire face turned red in an instant.

"W-wait! P-please!" she stammered, flustered beyond belief, instinctively pulling her hands back to herself.

"T-this is a public place...! I-I think it’s better if we not...!"

Her words faltered when Gray stood up.

Before she could retreat any further, he stepped closer. His hand rose gently, fingers brushing along her cheek, as if grounding her trembling thoughts.

"Relax," he murmured softly, only for her to hear.

Lyra’s breath caught.

Then his other hand slid behind her neck, just firm enough to keep her from running away.

Her eyes widened.

"G–Gray?"

He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss against her lips.

"...Mhm♡"

It was a gentle kiss, and just from that, Lyra went completely still, stunned, her mind blanking out for a heartbeat.

Then the crowd erupted with cheers and laughter as they saw the young couple kiss each other.

Thump, thump, thump!

Her heart slammed against her chest, loud enough that she swore he could hear it.

Slowly, hesitantly, she closed her eyes.

The noise around them faded into the background, replaced by the warmth of his touch, the soft pressure of his lips, and the dizzying comfort spreading through her chest.

She relaxed.

And for those few seconds, she simply let herself enjoy it, her heartbeat racing, her thoughts melting away, and her world narrowing down to just him.

It was a truly beautiful memory for her.
