The Return Of the Invincible Heiress-Chapter 378
"Please, I’m begging you. Don’t do anything reckless. I’m coming to see you right now."
If this had happened two years ago, he would have hung up without hesitation and let her do whatever she wanted.
But now was different.
Nearly everyone in the Carter family was a public figure powerful businesspeople, celebrities in music, film, and sports and all still rising stars. With countless eyes watching, he couldn’t afford a scandal.
He especially couldn’t let Linda ruin things for Luna or the Carter family.
And truthfully, her low and manipulative stunt had already angered him.
"Then come quickly!" Linda cried. "If I don’t see you, I’ll really die!"
"You must wait for me," Jaden replied, his voice firm.
He stormed out of the room, his footsteps heavy, the door slamming shut behind him.
"I’ll wait for you," Linda whispered to herself. "I’ll wait until I die."
"Alright, I’m on my way. I’m hanging up now," Jaden said.
He ended the call and slipped his phone into his pocket. Then, instead of rushing, he slowed his pace and walked leisurely down the stairs.
At that time, his grandparents were out, and Josie was at the art troupe.
The villa was quiet just him and a few of the younger ones at home.
He stopped by Dolli’s cat bed, fed her slowly, and gently petted her.
Next, he visited Bello’s kennel, gave the dog food and water, and stroked its head before heading out.
He also waved at Harry and Hommy, reminding them to keep an eye on the house.
As he left, he looked up at the sky, put on a face mask, and strolled down the mountain road.
Although it was midsummer, last night’s rain had cooled the air. The weather was mild no hat or umbrella needed.
The neighborhood was rich with greenery. Once outside, he walked along Lakeside Avenue, where trees lined both sides of the road, casting shade that made for a pleasant walk.
Meanwhile, Linda was perched on the rooftop railing, gripping it tightly with both hands and feet. She scanned the area below constantly.
Why hadn’t Jaden arrived yet?
It only took six or seven minutes to drive from Mid-Level Mountain Garden to here. It had already been over half an hour.
She kept calling him, but he wasn’t answering.
Could something have happened to him on the way? she wondered anxiously. Sweat and tears blurred her vision, and her body ached. Her limbs were going numb, she didn’t know how much longer she could hold on.
Before calling Jaden, she had already been pacing the rooftop edge for over half an hour, shouting to the sky:
"What’s wrong with me?"
"Why did you abandon me?"
"Are my years of love not worth more than her beauty?"
After catching the attention of people below, she climbed the railing and pretended to jump.
Now, she had been up there for over an hour. Exhausted by the psychological pressure, she was close to collapsing.
The crowd below grew, turning from a few onlookers to a full street-blocking mass.
Police and traffic officers had arrived.
Several officers reached the rooftop, one of them only 15–20 feet away, trying to talk her down.
"Please don’t do anything rash. Come down from there," one officer urged.
"I want to see my boyfriend!" Linda cried. "I’ve already called him, he’s coming! I won’t leave until I see him!"
Tears streamed down her face. This part wasn’t fake. Her sobbing and trembling were real.
"Don’t come near me! Don’t try to force me down!" she screamed.
A kind-looking female officer gently said,
"Can you give me your boyfriend’s number? I’ll call him. If necessary, we’ll go pick him up ourselves."
Linda had been waiting for someone to say exactly that.
She gave them Jaden’s number, crying,
"I don’t really want to die. I want to live. But I love him too much. Being abandoned like this,I’d rather die."
The officer dialed the number and tried to comfort her, but Jaden didn’t answer.
Meanwhile, the police downstairs had already set up a large inflatable safety cushion beneath the building.
Seeing it made Linda feel slightly more secure.
If things really go wrong, she thought, I’ll just jump. It’s only five stories. It won’t kill me or maybe just injure me a little.
But in her mind, she had a plan:
If Jaden forces me to jump, I’ll expose our relationship first. I’ll tell the world he cheated. Luna will be the mistress. Even if she’s rich and powerful, no one will question me. I’ll take her down with me. At least I won’t lose completely.
She continued to call Jaden, but he still didn’t answer.
The afternoon sun grew hotter, erasing the morning’s coolness. She felt dizzy from the heat, her body heavy, her grip slipping.
Her sweaty hands made it harder to hold the railing. She swayed just one wrong move could send her over.
Part of her wanted to climb down.
But doing that would mean all her effort was wasted. She would be arrested immediately.
No,she had to hold on until Jaden came. Only then could she use this "death" to force him to be with her.
Even if he was just pretending, at least they’d spend time together. Maybe her sincerity would win him back. Maybe she could break up his relationship with Luna.
Her fantasies were sweet, but reality was cruel.
Sweat streamed down her face, blurring her vision. She could barely see.
She lifted one hand to wipe her eyes. But she was too weak. Her body tilted. She swayed.
"Danger!" the officers shouted, rushing toward her.
Startled, Linda instinctively leaned away from them further off balance.
Just as they tried to grab her hand, her phone suddenly rang.
It must be Jaden.
Overwhelmed with joy, she forgot her position. She raised her hand to answer
And then tragedy struck.
She lost control. Her body slipped.
The police only managed to grab a bit of her sleeve.
Linda fell.
