Chapter 26: The Golden Eyes Interruption

Ryker’s POV

I could see Mira’s eyes rolling around, her breath ragged as it dawned on her that she had been defeated. Then, without warning she got up in a dynamic style and then took to her heels.

Without thinking twice about it, forgetting the pain eating deep into my system, I charged forward, forcing my legs to move. She was fast, but I wasn’t about to let her escape, not after all she’s done, not when I was close to finding out about Asher’s plan.

As I ran after her, my muscles screamed in protest, the effect of the wolfsbane was getting worse, but I kept on moving. Giving up wasn’t in my dictionary.

Just as I was about to grab her, I was interrupted by a blur of movement.

There was no time for me to react; all I felt was a force bumping into me, pulling me and sending me flying backwards.

I barely maintained my footing, raising up my head to a fierce golden eyes standing in between Mira and I

The figure was tall, wearing dark armour, and his presence radiated danger.

"A beta?" I muttered under my breath

This beta also seemed to be on another level, he was definitely one of Asher’s elite warrior wolves.

Honestly, his stance, demeanour and composure were intimidating to me as it made me worry for a split second how my other pack members would feel seeing him.

I also wondered how many of these kinds of wolves Asher had. Seeing them both.

Mira was one, and this fierce-looking stranger was two.

Mira didn’t dull herself, she took the moment and kept running.

It made me wonder if this was her contingency, I wondered if she had always had him lurking around just in case something like this happened

If she had, then I must say she’s really a smart one.

I growled, my red eyes growling. But the mysterious golden eyes merely tilted his head.

And yes, there was something else I noticed: his golden eyes weren’t just like any other beta wolf I had seen. He was definitely a high-grade beta wolf.

I smirked at the realisation.

I wasn’t sure of what happened next, everything happened in the blink of an eye. One minute, he was right there standing in front of me, his gaze icy, and the other minute, he was gone. As if he was carried away by the wind.

Anger and frustration came flooding in on me. I had her, she was just few steps away but then this mysterious golden eyes came up. Now she was gone. Golden eyes too, gone.

I growled in frustration

"This isn’t over", I shouted at the top of my voice, hoping that Mira and the mysterious golden eyes would hear me.

I began to pant heavily, the wolfsbane was becoming more effective. Every muscle in my body ached from the fight with Mira; I still couldn’t believe that Mira was that strong.

All of this was nothing compared to the anger burning inside of me. I had her, she was on the floor, beaten, yet in that final moment, she slipped through my fingers.

My eyes rolled to the spot where I had seen the golden eyes stand for just a split second. This figure didn’t even move, he didn’t speak too, but his interference was enough.

It didn’t feel like a simple rescue to me; it felt like a message; Asher was trying to pass a message to me, a warning precisely. This meant that these golden eyes must have been around all through the times Mira had been training Kira

Waiting patiently in case anything went wrong.

It dawned on me how unsafe Kira was. I turned to look at her; she was still lying on the ground, barely moving.

She must have been stabbed with the dagger laced with wolfsbane.

I took in a deep breath and exhaled almost immediately, attempting to shove down the anger and fire threatening to swallow me. This was far from being over, if anything, it confirmed what had been going on.

I wanted to believe that Mira was lying, trying to get under my skin, but this... the golden brown eyes? He’s the confirmation that Mira was a spy all this while. Planted in my pack. Learning our weaknesses and techniques right under our noses.

I blamed myself for not noticing sooner. I also wondered when it all started.

A fresh wave of anger flowed through every vessel In me, but I couldn’t afford to let it consume me; I needed to be focused, if not for anything, but for Kira and my pack.

She needed me; they needed me, and most importantly, I needed Kira.

I vowed that the next time I crossed paths with Mira, I wouldn’t let her escape; I would pay her back for what she did to Kira.

There would be no second chances.

As I tried to make my way to Kira, the pain became more excruciating, my body finally giving in as I stumbled back, barely able to stay on my feet. My sight became blurry, I could barely see. My breath came in rough gasps, and despite all my efforts, trying to maintain my footing, my knees shook.

I hit the ground like a bag of rice.

I gritted my teeth and clenched my fist against the excruciating pain flowing through me.

I could hear footsteps coming closer, I barely had time to react, but the moment I knew it was Emilia and Marcus that was at my side, I heaved a deep sigh of relief.

Emilia placed her hands against my wounds, her voice laced with urgency but distant. Marcus stood by me cursing under his breath. Scanning the area for any remaining threats.

Kira seemed to be watching. Even in her weakened state, I could barely see her, but I could tell that she looked better than earlier; Emilia probably found the antidote for the wolfsbane and had administered it to her.

I felt relieved.

Kira had seen everything; she saw Mira’s betrayal first. I felt so disappointed in myself that I hadn’t noticed her betrayal before Kira did, but I was grateful for one thing: she was able to gain something.

Her powers.

I could tell she was stronger now.

I clenched my fists, forcing my body to stay upright. "I’ll find her", I growled, "I will hunt Mira down myself."

"Please, Ryker, don’t say a word; the more you move, the faster the poison moves, too; you are really lucky it was a slight cut."

"What do you mean" I managed to ask

"If you had been stabbed the way Mira was, you would have dropped dead earlier."

"Please, alpha, you have to listen to Emilia; you are not in good shape to move."

I hesitated I tried to stand up but I immediately fell back, the wolfsbane had eating deep into my system

My eyes shifted to where Kira was; she was already sitting up, and she chuckled.

Seeing her that way made me happy, I smiled back at her. She gave me a thumbs up.

A sudden wave of satisfaction hit me.

Emilia was grinding and mixing something that looked like herbs, I assumed it was the antidote for the wolfsbane.

When she was done, she placed them on the injured part; I felt a sharp tingling sensation, which later reduced.

"Now, we just have to sit and wait till you both are strong enough to stand up," Emila said rubbing her palms together.

"So Mira is a spy, working for Asher?" Marcus asked

I nodded.

"This is unbelievable!" He exclaimed, "The same Mira we all grew up with, the same Mira who never finished up a task assigned to beta wolves in the pack." He paused, anger laced in his eyes "Her fighting skills..." his voice trailed off.

I understood the way he felt at that moment. It was the same way I felt while fighting her; Mira was the last person I would have expected to deal me a blow.

We sat down there for a while; in about thirty minutes, I was able to feel my legs and body again.

I sat up, stretching my hands first to see how good it was, then I stood, jumping up to check how my legs were and all was good.

"All good" I stated

"How’s that possible," Emilia asked, surprise evident in her tone.

"How come you are all healed up so fast," Marcus asked too

"You don’t expect an alpha to be down for too long, do you?" I said, smiling. "If I am down for too long, who will take care of the pack," I asked, tilting my head to the side.

I walked up to where Kira sat, stretching my right hand to her. I asked, "Do you think you can stand?"

She nodded slightly.

"Then let’s head to my Palace, you wouldn’t be able to rest well here, and I am not going to leave you here alone"

"But what about Isabella."

"I don’t give a f**k about her right now, you are my number one priority"

A faint smile appeared at the corner of her lips, I was happy to see her smile.

We made our way back to my Palace; I made a vow to myself never to allow Kira to be alone; she was alive now, but that was only because I intervened.

I tried not to imagine what would have happened if those golden eyes had shown up and I hadn’t been there.

This wasn’t the end, Mira would be back. I knew that for sure, even Asher himself would come, with an army maybe, but when they came, I would never allow them to lay a finger on Kira; I would be ready, we would be ready.
