Chapter 59: Prisoner of darkness

Asher’s POV

I know you all weren’t expecting me to be alive. Unfortunately, for me, I was alive, hale, yes, but not hearty. During the battle between Ryker and Kira, the entity that had given me my powers came and swallowed me and my golden-eyed wolves—I am sure you all remember that particular event.

After that, I woke to find myself in a place that looked like a dungeon or a cave. I stood up to see if I would find my golden-eyed wolves, but I couldn’t see them. I called out to one of them, but there was no response.

"How did I even get here? I thought I was dead," I muttered under my breath.

"Well, apparently you are not dead—yet."

I looked around. There was no one but me in the space, but I could hear the voice clearly, not from within me now, not from my head, but from someone in the cave.

"Who are you?" I asked, extending my claws.

"Ouch, you’ve forgotten your master so soon?" The statement was followed by an evil grin.

"I have no master!" I said firmly.

And that was the biggest mistake of my life. The next thing I felt was a constriction in my lungs. I couldn’t breathe. I gasped for air, but it felt like even the air in the environment had ceased. Then I began to feel my feet go above the ground. I was levitating.

I struggled to maintain balance, but it was a waste of time. Nothing was happening.

"How dare you deny me?" The voice was laced with an angry growl.

It was then it dawned on me.

I knew who it was.

TENEBRIS. The dark entity with tendrils.

Yes, that was his name. Tenebris. The first time I met him, he had introduced himself as Tenebris, telling me that it was the Latin meaning of darkness. I should have known right there that being associated with someone like this was nothing but a disaster.

But no, my thirst for more power, thirst for being stronger was stronger. So I overlooked the dangers that came with being associated with an entity of darkness.

"I am sorry," I managed to say despite my constricted airflow.

"What did you say?" He growled.

"I am sorry," I repeated.

He made use of gravitational magic to send me flying across the cave until I eventually landed on the wall of the cave. Debris came crashing down on me. But I managed to protect my head.

I saw myself levitating again, then before I could fathom what was going on, I saw myself standing in front of a fine-looking gentleman whose hands were on my neck, almost choking the life out of me.

Is this his human form? I thought.

"Don’t you ever disrespect me? Are we clear?"

I nodded.

Then he released his grip on me.

"Besides, I saved you from the hands of the moonkeeper and her pack. If not for me, you and your golden-eyed wolves would have been annihilated."

My eyes widened. "What about the other pack members?" I asked.

"Oh! Uhm, they are dead already. I am sorry. I think I might have had a hand in their death, too."

I gritted my teeth and clenched my fist in anger, but there was nothing I could do. He was far more powerful than I am, far more powerful than I could ever be. Attacking him head-on would be a disaster for me.

I couldn’t even express my mind. I just knelt there, head bowed to the ground, gritting my teeth.

He turned to look at me, bloodlust evident in his eyes. "Did you just say something?" He asked, his gaze cold. It sent shivers down my spine.

I began to feel goosebumps all over me. I was scared of Tenebris, scared of this creature.

How the hell did such a creature even exist?

"No, my lord, I didn’t say anything," I replied, my voice shaky.

A wry smile appeared at the corner of his lips. "Well, I brought you here because I need you."

"Please, with all due respect, what about my golden-eyed wolves?"

"Oh! Those poor little creatures of yours, I am so sorry," he grinned. "I had to finish them off since they were not useful to me, but before I did that, I made sure to suck out every last bit of power in them."

Immediately, I felt my chin lift and my face straighten. My gaze rested on him. He had used the power of telekinesis to make me look at him; then suddenly, his eye colour changed to golden.

My heartbeat raced.

What did I just see?

He had turned himself into a werewolf by absorbing their powers.

So many questions fought for space in my head.

"I know you are thinking if I had become a werewolf. Well, sadly enough, I still haven’t gotten a hang of it, and that’s where you come in."

"I don’t understand you, my lord," I remarked, bowing my head.

I wanted to get as much information as I could about why he absorbed their powers, why he needed me, and maybe why he needed the moonkeeper.

"If you think you can get information from me about my plans?" He laughed ominously. "Then you are the most stupid person on this planet," he added.

I knew there was probably no way I could get out of this cave alive, but I still wanted to bet my chances. I was beginning to regret my actions, and the only way I could redeem myself was to find a way to get information and probably, if I could leave the cave, I would find Kira and share the information.

She was the moonkeeper and probably the only living being who could put an end to Tenebris.

I heaved a sigh, maintaining my posture. "My lord, there’s nothing to be worried about. There’s no way I am leaving this cave alive. You wouldn’t even let me."

Laughing hysterically, he replied, "I am glad you know that." And that was how he began to tell me how he intended to use me, absorbing my powers and making himself a werewolf. Not just any kind of werewolf, but an alpha wolf that would control every other wolf in the world.

"How do you intend to achieve that?" I asked.

"Have you heard of the Crescent moonstone?"

"Moonstone?"

"Yes," he giggled.

"No, I haven’t, my lord."

"Well, the Crescent moonstone is an artefact with so much magical power embedded in it. With it, I can successfully become you and then I would be able to get all the wolves in the world to do my bidding. With that, there wouldn’t be a need to have different werewolf factions anymore. Every wolf would answer to me," he let out a devilish laugh.

The sound echoed through the cave, causing a small cave quake.

He wanted to do all this just so he could become the only alpha. I had a question in mind that I couldn’t afford to ask.

Why me?

There are more than a hundred werewolves on this earth, and out of all of them, he chose to use me. What was so special about me?

"Oh, I know what you are thinking," he blurted out, disrupting my thoughts. He moved closer to me. "Well, all I can tell you is that you have a special wolf bloodline," he smiled.

I began to ask him more questions about the Crescent moonstone and found out that he wouldn’t be able to get it himself because he was the opposite of everything the moonstone stands for.

He was darkness, and the moonstone was light, and darkness and light cannot be together. One would have to give way. But from the way he talked about the moonstone, I could tell that he dreaded it.

Which meant only one thing: his darkness cannot comprehend the light that comes from it. I was happy in my heart. There was finally a way to defeat this entity.

I offered to help him retrieve it. I had a hidden agenda, but he laughed at my proposal. "The moonstone is something that even I can’t retrieve on my own, and you think you can retrieve it?"

I raised my head, looking more confident. "I can do this, my lord."

"Well, sadly, no one else can retrieve it except the one who represents the goddess here on earth," he said, an angry expression laced on his face.

"You mean the moonkeeper?"

He nodded.

I felt a little bit disappointed. I hoped it was something that I could retrieve by myself so I could make use of it to finish off the entity and avenge my golden-eyed wolves.

"Then how do you intend to get it?"

"I am just going to find a way to make her go in search of it on time, then I would snatch it from her when she retrieves it."

Smart move. It made me wonder if Kira had the power to fight this entity. She was the moonkeeper, the most powerful werewolf that existed. I had Flashbacks of how she conjured up a full moon—something that had never been heard of before—but she did it. How she created a link to every one of Ryker’s pack members just so she could share the power of the moon and the power that came from her to them.

Would she really be able to retrieve this moonstone?

Most importantly, would she be able to bring an end to Tenebris with the moonstone?

"Make yourself comfortable."

That was the last thing he said before vanishing into thin air. I was left alone with my thoughts. How do I get out of here to inform Kira about Tenebris’s plans?
