Chapter 323: Honesty

Luca wasn’t sure how to interpret the look on his mom’s face, but right now it was like she’d drunk lemon concentrate.

Maybe about an entire jar of it.

But how could the loving mother not look like that after hearing all this?

In fact, her eye had been twitching for a while now that she’d begun to wonder if it was going to be a permanent ailment.

Which, considering the current topic of conversation, would be entirely understandable.

And there was the matter of what to do with this white wolf.

Was he not a white rabbit, instead?

The duchess wasn’t sure how to feel, but how could she say something when her spawn really had a criminal streak?

To think it started innocently enough.

Well, relatively.

It took Luca a lot of courage to finally admit his long-standing secret, which frankly even surprised Xavier.

And if there was one entity who was nodding his head at all this, that would be Sid, who had witnessed all the crimes.

Which, surprisingly, the little master decided to animatedly discuss.

He was flustered all over. But Luca promised he’d tell his mom everything, so he was trying his absolute best and was confessing because that was what good sons should do when asked by their parents.

It was his first time having a mom who was really his, so he wanted to abide by the duties he had once heard of.

So, the good son charged on and told them all about it.

The retelling was earnest, dramatic, and as honest as he could be based on his memories.

He mentioned how they faced an ancient arachnid, only to encounter difficulties as Xavier felt like he had to do something and was willing to sacrifice for it.

But Luca, with a face so red and those puffed-up eyes, reasoned that it was impossible because he had worked so hard on Xavier.

The prince, on the other hand, was unsure about why the little chipmunk was prefacing his story with this reasoning until he heard him say that he had bonked him in the head.

Yeah. That kind.

Apparently, the Imperial Crown Prince had been clocked in the head right before his mecha had been hijacked to somehow seal off the cave.

"..."

"..."

"I returned, Sid!" Luca squeaked. "Eventually." He added to make sure they knew.

Luca was fiddling with his fingers, especially as the silence grew heavier. But thankfully, the duchess tried to find the good in all this by saying that he did it to save someone who likely wasn’t thinking straight at that time.

And so the little daredevil found the courage to continue his tale which really stressed out the prince who thought he was going to share about their failed AND successful XXX.

Xavier started looking increasingly pale, if that was even possible with how badly he looked right now.

He had been planning to come clean, but with his wife telling the story...someone might die from all the misunderstandings that would arise.

And he was almost certain that it would be him.

Thankfully, Luca only focused on how he felt when the guiding didn’t work out the first time.

Sort of.

And more importantly, the duchess ended up too engrossed in the fact that her son could do something about the corruption that had plagued the Empire and her husband.

How could she now dwell on it when she could remember what Leander was like while he was contaminated?

And to hear that her son was able to cure Xavier like that got her thinking about him and just how lucky they were to get their son back at such a critical time.

Xavier, on the other hand, was preparing for the worst; after all, if this story had no other twists, then he knew what was going to happen next.

But then he saw her expression and realized she was lost in thought.

She was deep enough that she had almost missed it when Luca talked about how they had luckily managed to work through their issues by taking responsibility for each other with a binding contract.

The brows of a certain mother furrowed as her ears felt itchy.

And she was going to ask for an elaboration when her son suddenly mentioned how he tried to give him a pill while he went to deal with the ancient arachnid.

Sounded harmless, up until he said that Xavier wouldn’t wake up.

And Luca, even now, trembled as he remembered his sheer panic, as he narrated how he had tried everything, even to the point of requesting help from his sworn brother, Ollie.

"And that’s when Ollie came," he added helpfully. "He helped me try to revive Xavier, and—" flailed the little chipmunk who was reliving the memory.

Meanwhile, outside this tunnel, everyone else who absolutely weren’t listening to the conversations that couldn’t be ignored with their enhanced hearing looked at the wiggling stick next to them.

It was because a certain helpful mop shivered as he remembered how he almost sent himself straight to the death row during that fateful day.

It was the same day he learned about his good brother’s marital status, which now caused him to look at Kyle with eyes that could be mistaken for saucers.

"!!!"

And he was right to panic.

For when Luca got to the part where Ollie confronted him about Xavier, who was apparently near death at that point, the duchess was now all ears.

This time, her eye didn’t just twitch.

This time, she took a deep breath with all the zen in her heart before asking her son to come again—

To please repeat that little bit about the so-called responsibility that he had secured for himself.

And so he did.

And she listened.

But as the words hit her one after another, one more absurd than the last, her mental fortress, built over years of war and pain, cracked.

Because if she understood correctly—and stars help her, she really hoped she was wrong—then this wasn’t a relationship.

It was not that type of relationship where they were so deeply in love that they had formed a binding imprint so strong she couldn’t pry them apart.

This wasn’t even the usual case of two kids discovering hormones and accidentally syncing their seas of consciousness.

No.

It was a contract.

And worse still—

Her son, her precious, glowing, adorable son, asked for it.

...To protect himself from a laundry list of things.

"..."

Her mind blanked out. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

Her baby.

This sweet fluffball.

Had essentially gotten married... to escape his crimes.

"..."

Her hands itched for her sword.

And maybe a ventilator.
