Chapter 388: Discovery

Maybe.

But really, more than reading books in secret and sharing tidbits to the side, what might help these two brothers would be to stop staring at a certain prince like he was some kind of test subject.

For someone was seriously starting to have suspicions.

And not because people stopped working. Or because things were slowing down. On the contrary, the projects were flying ahead. Energy stabilizers were nearing completion. Panels were being farmed out. And the duchy was moving at breakneck speed.

So no, it wasn’t work that tipped him off.

It was the twitching.

And he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was up with those two because every time Xavier so much as entered the room, his little wife would twitch like he’d been suddenly zapped.

At one point in time, Luca even hit his head against the divider of a shelf in surprise.

And while Luca had times when he was so frazzled, he’d never be one to be so distracted that Xavier had to catch him from tumbling down the stairs.

But what’s worse was when he caught him, he looked like he was going to boil over in dizziness.

So, what else could he do but carry him over to the infirmary, only to be stopped by the same guy who now gripped him as if his life depended on it.

"No-No, Xavier! I-I’m really fine!" swore the person who definitely did not look fine with his neck reddening like heat stroke was upon him.

His ears were pink. His face was warm. His eyes were wide.

He looked like a man on the edge.

Because he was. Although in other aspects, he should really be more than fine. So maybe that wasn’t a complete lie?

And really, Luca was fine in the sense that he was in good health and had enough sleep, water, and food. But what was not fine was his brain and poor heart, which had been doing tumbles since about two days ago when they decided on "learning" about love.

His brother Ollie didn’t actually hand material to Luca right away and decided to first check on what he could actually send.

And so the golden-eyed dungeon owner decided to research a bit on his own to be prepared while waiting for the machines to finish pre-fabricating the casings he needed.

Surprisingly, there was a lot of research material about the science of love and falling in love, which touched a lot on neurotransmitters, hormones, and the brain’s reward system.

So, did he just have to go to the medical bay to check?

After all, an MRI would show if certain parts of his brain lit up if he was, in fact, in love.

Ah. His brother was right that there was a lot of material about it; he just didn’t know he had to think about love!

But thankfully (or not), a certain someone came barreling in to stop the innocent heir from asking the medical bay to check him for signs and symptoms of love as if it were a disease. Although a few would argue that it was, in fact, one disease so ground-breaking it could capsize an entire duchy.

However, maybe an MRI would have been better, as Luca found it a bit difficult to connect with the books he was given for in-depth study.

And the poor little chipmunk really tried his best, but—

"Brother...I’m not sure how she was supposed to know she’s in love, with that man looming over her like that?"

Wasn’t that a threat? Thought Luca, who was instead worried about the woman, who was experiencing what his brother called a wall-slam.

But how could it not be a threat when big bullies back in Tesseris would do that, so he wouldn’t be able to escape?

Therefore, wasn’t this woman in need of help?

Luca voiced his concerns to Ollie, who definitely didn’t think of it that way, and explained that ideally, they shouldn’t be threatening the other person but should be encasing them protectively or possessively.

"Brother, see, that woman should be experiencing ’doki-doki!’" he said as he put a hand on his heart and made a tapping motion.

"Doki-doki?"

"Yes!" Nodded the blonde, who was seriously about to go into an explanation about the different heart thumps, if his good brother didn’t stop to ask another question.

"Then what about this brother? A few pages ago, they were shooting at each other, but now, they were kissing?"

"But didn’t he murder the older brother of this woman?" asked Luca, who was seeing enemies to lovers for the first time, and wanted to know if this was also possible?

"Brother, I don’t think I can love someone who murders you..." He added as he seriously thought about Ollie being murdered like that, only for him to be fraternizing with the enemy.

Also, would Xavier kill his brother?

Obviously, the blonde who used to find the story cute and heart-wrenching couldn’t do so after imagining himself as the murdered brother.

"Oh."

"You’re right, brother...Maybe that won’t work. And maybe it’s good to remember not to love someone who would murder me!"

Yes, definitely. Or the mop might just decide to resurrect from the dead just to haunt them.

But the slightly taller brother decided to forgo the thought to focus on the actual problem.

It seems like all the material he had wouldn’t work because, after thinking about it, even he didn’t think they’d resonate with someone like his brother.

Hmm.

Well, there was one other thing he could try, but he didn’t think it would be appropriate...and what if his brother got scared of those?

But maybe scared should be the last of his concerns, as Luca, who was starting to feel like maybe he was incapable of feeling love, got the blonde to surrender the "contraband" in distress.

It was a link, one that got uploaded to his terminal and onto D-29’s system, who was still out with Cece on their mining trips.

And for all intents and purposes, it should’ve been a harmless link had the older brother taught him about tags.

But what do you know, the studious little guide nearly fell over after reading through the first Chapter of the fanfiction called, "I Thought He Was Just My Roommate."

The first paragraphs were fine.

Funny. Relaxed.

Then suddenly it wasn’t.

Because halfway through Chapter one, the main character, a soft-spoken student with golden eyes, was being backed against a wall by a cold, white-haired, taller roommate.

And Luca froze.

Because when the first name was shown, a gasp escaped his lips.

Suspicious.

Very suspicious.

Then the little reader, whose toes were curling, choked as his heart thundered in his ears.

He stared at the text like it had personally offended him. His whole body flushed red. But instead of running out, he did what any rational person would do.

He hunkered down by the work station and read faster.

Just to check.

He needed confirmation. Just a few more paragraphs.

That was two days ago.

And today, Xavier was carrying him towards the medical bay, and Luca felt like hyperventilating as his body was reminded of page seventeen. And eighteen.

And definitely nineteen.
