Chapter 641: Chapter 554 The Murderer

"Uncle, no." Jian Si watched helplessly as Jian Hedong forcefully smeared the blade of his knife across Li Ronghua’s neck, unable to stop him despite being so close.

At this critical moment, suddenly a figure jumped in through the window.

The person charged at Jian Hedong with the speed of lightning, while raising a hand to strike at Jian Hedong’s neck.

Amidst the screams of Li Ronghua, Jian Hedong’s knife had already cut deep, but it was still a tiny distance away from the artery.

However, Li Ronghua fainted from excessive fright. When she fell, Jian Hedong also fell, the two of them collapsing together, one on top of the other.

Jian Si, still in shock, finally had a chance to clearly see the person who had dramatically appeared.

Nightfall tinted the surroundings, and the light at the window had already dimmed. He stood in front of the window, like a faint shadow, his delicate features shining like gold in the weak light, making it hard to look away.

Nan Yu and a few others rushed over, and Nan Yu shouted at him, "Bro, you were just in time."

Nan Zhan hummed in response and walked towards Jian Si.

Jian Si paused for a moment and then lowered her head, "Is my uncle okay?"

That hit he just got looked pretty severe.

"He just fainted temporarily." Nan Zhan approached her, lowering his head to look at her scalp, while her hands were clenched tightly into fists at her sides.

Some people carried Jian Hedong outside, and Jian Si hurriedly tried to follow, but was stopped by Nan Zhan.

"It’s superfluous for you to go. Jian Hedong is now a prime suspect, and it’s best if you don’t have too much contact with him."

Jian Si looked dejected, her eyes brimming with tears.

She stood at the doorway, watching as Jian Hedong was carried away, and this departure might be a farewell forever.

Just after descending a flight of stairs, an out-of-breath Jian Chuan arrived. Upon seeing Jian Hedong, complex emotions surged in his eyes, soon turning into profound sorrow.

"The injured needs treatment." Jian Chuan tried to divert his gaze, skillfully picking up medical equipment from his bag. Although a forensic expert, he was also proficient in these basic medical skills.

Watching him bend down to treat Li Ronghua, his difficult stepmother, the handsome profile of his face was particularly striking in the dimly lit corridor. He was so focused, as if the person who had just been carried away wasn’t his father.

Jian Chuan’s puzzled gaze swept between the two and didn’t delve too deeply, he nodded at them and hurried downstairs.

Nan Zhan said, "Do not obstruct official duties."

Jian Si felt indignant, sniffing her sour nose, "Mind your own business."

In the following days, the truth of the case gradually emerged; traces of blood belonging to three victims were found in Jian Hedong’s tricycle, proving that he used this tricycle to transport dead bodies to the neighborhood, placing them in different hidden spots.

Placing one of the bodies in the wall of Jian Si’s home was something he felt was somewhat improper, but he was convinced Jian Si would not discover it. Since she wouldn’t notice, naturally she wouldn’t fear, and over time it would just become another brick in the wall, unknown to anyone.

The formaldehyde used to preserve the bodies was stolen by Jian Hedong using his experience from his two years working at the medical college; he thought of this method fearing the bodies might produce a foul smell and attract attention.

Besides, several eyewitnesses confirmed, after receiving Jian Si’s portrait, that the man in the portrait was the suspect they had seen initially.

"I didn’t expect that the murderer would be Jian Si’s uncle," Nan Yu exclaimed at the dinner table, "She really is pitiful, her own uncle killed her best friend."

When he killed the first victim, he had no plan. After the murder, he thought he might have been seen by a passerby, so he dared not bury the body in the mountains. Hence, he thought of the abandoned well in the neighborhood where Jian Si lived, a place he could pass by each time.

During a sunny day, under the blazing sun, he used a tricycle to bring the corpse into the neighborhood and threw it into the well by midnight.

By the second and third times, Jian Hedong was evidently prepared.

He originally intended to throw the bodies into the well again, but just then Jian Si’s house wall was damaged. When he supervised the repair, he saw that huge hole, which in his mind became the perfect spot for hiding bodies. So, he devised a way to dismiss the workers and secretly dragged the corpse in and built it into the wall.

As for the third corpse, he chose an unattended spot above the elevator.

Jian Hedong could have stopped his killing there, but Feng Piaopiao’s appearance reignited his desire to kill. He led a pitiful life and naturally didn’t want his son to follow in the same footsteps. He argued with Jian Chuan, who unexpectedly declared his determination to marry no one but that woman. In his shock, Jian Hedong harbored evil thoughts, believing that a woman who wasn’t chaste deserved death.

He secretly followed Jian Chuan, figured out Feng Piaopiao’s address, and then paid her a visit.

Being Jian Chuan’s father, Piaopiao was unsuspecting, even offered him water. While she was washing fruits, Jian Hedong strangled her from behind with a rope and staged it as a suicide.

After killing four people, Jian Hedong targeted his final victim, Li Ronghua, the main culprit. But his deep-rooted fear of Li Ronghua kept him from proceeding several times, until the truth was on the verge of exposure. Realizing he wouldn’t have another chance, he rushed to Li Ronghua’s place.

It was, however, too late.

Nan Zhan, while having a bite, seemed lost in thought for a moment, but did not speak.

Nan Yu continued, "Jian Si is a good girl. Suddenly encountering such a calamity, I think it’s hard for her to accept. It really is tough on her."

"Next week is Dad’s birthday," Nan Zhan suddenly changed the topic.

Nan Yu said nonchalantly, "I won’t be attending. He probably doesn’t want me there either; my very presence is like a thorn in his side to him. He probably wishes I would disappear immediately, lest his great future gets tarnished by exposure."

Nan Zhan nodded, "It’s just a boring gathering, better not to go."

The brothers were having dinner when Nan Yu’s phone suddenly rang, he instinctively said, "It’s Jian Si."

Nan Yu answered the call, though it’s unclear what was said on the other side, he repeated "Okay" twice before hanging up.

Nan Zhan across the table seemed to be concentrating on eating, but his eyebrows were slightly raised.

Nan Yu took the initiative, "She said she wants to move out from your place. She’s already found a place, near the old town chapel, and she asked me to help her move."

Nan Yu noticed that Nan Zhan’s expression immediately turned somber.

He knew that Jian Si had been staying in Nan Zhan’s place, and he hadn’t thought much of it. His cold-hearted brother suddenly bursting into a fit of benevolence was surprising indeed, but since Jian Si had no one else, having someone familiar take her in was reassuring.

He thought his brother was just being kind, but seeing his clearly upset expression, he couldn’t help but ask, "Brother, are you pursuing Jian Si?"

"Pursuing?" Nan Zhan suddenly sneered, "How can that be possible."

Upon hearing this response, Nan Yu breathed a sigh of relief, not wanting suddenly to face such a formidable rival in his brother.

After dinner, Nan Yu was eager to help Jian Si move. He drove to Jian Si’s neighborhood, still thinking about how to comfort her. Even though a week had passed since the incident, the damage was extensive and couldn’t be repaired in just a week.

Nan Yu hadn’t entered the neighborhood when he received a call from Officer Chen. After cracking the well naked corpse case,

Officer Chen said, "There’s been a burglary at a tobacco and liquor store, go check out the scene immediately."

"Burglary?" Nan Yu was somewhat reluctant because he was now in charge of significant cases, and these minor thefts were rarely handled by him anymore.

"We’re short-handed at the station, so you have to do this minor job," Officer Chen saw through his thoughts instantly.

Nan Yu agreed and sighed, thinking of Jian Si waiting for his help, he had no choice but to message Nan Zhan, "Brother, how about helping Jian Si move?"
