The Secret Obsession of the CEO-Chapter 249: [Bonus - ] Provocation And Threat
"I get it, William Caroll," Rory said. "Maybe you didn’t get any love from Sidney either. That’s why you were always jealous of Liam. He got everything you never got."
"I’m not William! I’m Lennon!" Lennon said in a commanding tone. "I want you to address me by my name!"
"Well," Rory shrugged. "I’m familiarizing the name you’ll be referred to as from now on."
Lennon knitted his brows in frustration. He then smirked. Maybe he was willing to fight it. But she knew that he cannot succeed because she wants it to happen, and it is her husband who is trying.
"You’re not saying anything?" she asked.
He went dead silent, but he was staring at her without even blinking. It made her feel uneasy giving an impression of prey that was marked by a predator.
Maybe that’s why no one could get through to him. The moment he is threatened, he turns predatory.
But no, he can’t be the predator here. She’s the one who is free. He’s the one in chains. She’s not going to let him get to her.
Before knowing, she got her courage back. "You asked me here and you’re just staring at me. I don’t know what you are thinking, dad," she went gentle again.
She was pretending to be kind to him, and she felt that he knew she was pretending too. Yet, she continued that way to show him that he is not getting in her skin.
Her lack of fear will do something to him, she knew.
"I get it. You’re walking back on everything. You’re telling tall tales about how your office room turned into a shrine of dead women. I get it. You’re scared like the rest of us. It’s not wrong. The innate wish to stay alive belongs to us all. No one is the exception," she said.
Lennon looked at her and scoffed. It was as if he was saying that she was wrong and that he was not scared of death. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Rory continued after receiving an acknowledgment that he was indeed listening to her.
"Maybe they are wrong, dad," she used the tone she uses on Ellie when talking to her. She knows it annoys adults when they are talked to like a kid. Lennon might not care about the tone of her voice, but she wanted it to be recorded as her not threatening him.
Because she was going to threaten him.
"Maybe you’re not very different from us... You want to live, to have something to live for. I don’t know what Liam feels, but I understand you, dad. I don’t know if you can avoid the death penalty. But in that case, know that I won’t abandon you. I’ll visit you. I’ll bring the kids to meet you..." she placed her hand on her abdomen.
"They are your blood. They should know you. I know you did terrible things to me and to Liam. But maybe... William Caroll, I should do what Aurora Caroll didn’t do for you. Maybe I, Aurora Roberts, should treat you as a human being. I don’t know if you deserve it. But know that I’ll be here..."
She shrugged.
"Maybe I won’t bring my kids here. But I’ll be here. You’ll know what we’re up to. I’ll show you our happiness, our growth with photographs and... videos... You’ll see how good Fitzwilliam and the Roberts family do through newspaper clippings. We’ll be great. And you’ll see..."
She smiled and did a little wave. "So long, William Caroll," she turned and walked to the door.
She heard him laughing behind her. "Talk to me more, darling," he shouted.
She didn’t mind him and amidst her heart pounding like a drum, grabbed the knob. Before she pressed it, the door opened. She took a step inside the other room and leaned on the chest of the man she had loved all her life.
Liam held her and closed the door behind her shutting the sound of the maniacal laughter behind her.
"Shh... You’re okay..." Liam softly patted her back. "You did great... You’re amazing..."
"Here, Mrs. Roberts," Matt offered her a shot of scotch.
"Water..." she held out her hand. They passed her a bottle and offered her a chair.
It took her a couple of minutes for her to compose herself.
Once they could see that she was composed, they asked her if she needs anything else.
"They’ve brought him out," Matt came from the screens. "But do you think you’ve broken him?" he asked.
Rory looked at Liam. She was not sure either. She thought she did her best. But she could be wrong. She needed a second opinion.
"All our life, he wanted to see us suffer. Change his name in every document or make him believe that his name is changed to his birth name. He will confess," Liam said and held Rory’s hand.
"Once he knows that he cannot bring the Roberts family down with him, he will confess. He will choose death."
Although Liam said that was the reason, he knew that Lennon knows that they will do something behind the scenes. His support is going to get cut off.
He will be sure of that once his name gets changed.
Rory threatened to meet him for the rest of his life to show him her happy life. He definitely won’t agree to sit and watch them be happy. He does not value life. Not his life or anyone else’s.
He won’t be allowed to die on his own accord. So, he will want to go out with a flare. Liam expected Lennon to confess to more crimes whether he committed them or not so he would die leaving a record no one could beat.
That’s how Lennon did business. He wanted to leave a record no one could beat. He didn’t succeed as much as he wanted to in business, but he will do it here, where he can.
Rory was smart to use that method to threaten him.
Matt nodded and looked at the psychiatrist in the room.
"He is well-provoked," he rubbed his chin. "He’s angry. He’ll... He might try to escape..." he looked at Rory with concern.
"Keep him inside, then," Liam said. "Aren’t you signing off on his medications?" he raised his brows.
The psychiatrist scratched the back of his head. He understood that Liam is asking him to restrict Lennon’s mental capabilities using medications. But that would be against the law and his profession to medicate someone unnecessarily.
But for that dangerous psychopath... Is it wrong to prescribe something to save the lives of others? It’s a moral conundrum--a grey area.
"I will be prescribing medications that he will need," the doctor said. He will have to think about it.
