The Snake God with SSS Rank Evolution System-Chapter 162: Learning to Tell Them Apart
Adam looked at Lilith, who was watching him with that characteristic serene expression—crimson eyes half-lidded, pale features illuminated by the dying firelight.
’She’s really beautiful when she’s quiet like this,’ he thought, the realization striking him with unexpected force. ’Well, she’s usually beautiful too, but sometimes she’s also... terrifying.’
"You’re not thinking anything inappropriate about me, are you?" Lilith’s voice cut through his reverie, soft but knowing.
Adam blinked, caught off guard. "No."
Lilith leaned closer—close enough that Adam could smell her scent, something floral and faintly exotic, mixed with the subtle undertone of her own unique presence. The firelight caught the curve of her lips as she smiled.
"Then why did you suddenly call me over?" Her voice was a low murmur, meant only for him.
Adam forced himself to focus, pushing past the distracting warmth of her proximity. "It’s because you’ve been acting strange today. Well, not just today, but lately you’ve been... different. What’s going on?"
Lilith’s expression flickered—just for a moment, a crack in that serene mask. Then it smoothed over. "Nothing’s going on."
Adam’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Really? Are you stressed about something? If there’s a problem, you should tell me. We’re family."
The word hung between them for a moment. Family. Lilith’s gaze dropped, her fingers twitching almost imperceptibly.
"It’s because of you," she said quietly.
Adam blinked, genuinely confused. "Because of me? Did I do something?"
Lilith looked up at him, and for once, her crimson eyes held something other than calm calculation. Frustration. Vulnerability. And beneath that, something warmer.
"It’s because you keep getting close to other women," she said, her voice carrying an edge of accusation. "And it makes me jealous. That’s all." She looked away, a faint flush coloring her pale cheeks. "Honestly, you’re so oblivious."
Adam stared at her for a long moment, processing. Then, slowly, understanding dawned.
’Jealous? She’s... jealous? Of Elise? Of Silvie?’ The pieces clicked into place—the possessive hand-holding, the subtle digs, the way she always positioned herself between him and any other woman who got too close. ’I didn’t realize...’
"Ah," he said finally, eloquently. "That’s... I didn’t know."
Lilith let out a soft huff, rising to her feet. "Well, now you do. I’m going to sleep."
She turned to leave—
And stopped.
Adam’s hand had caught hers. Not tightly, but firmly enough to halt her retreat.
"Wait, Lilith." His voice was quiet but steady. "I’m not done talking."
Lilith turned back, her expression guarded but curious. "What else is there to say?"
Adam didn’t answer with words. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a firm embrace. For a moment, Lilith went completely still—genuine shock freezing her usually graceful movements. Her hands hovered in the air, unsure where to land.
Then, slowly, she relaxed against him.
Adam’s voice came quietly, his chin resting atop her head. "I’m sorry. For making you feel that way." He paused, gathering his thoughts. "The truth is... I still don’t really know what I’m doing. My mind is a mess right now, thinking about Alice all the time. I don’t want to start something halfway—something that isn’t fair to you, or to me, or to anyone."
He felt her shift slightly against his chest.
"And I thought... I thought we could take this slow. Not rush into anything. Just... let things happen naturally." His arms tightened slightly. "I didn’t realize you were hurting because of it. That’s my fault."
Lilith was quiet for a long moment. Then her arms finally came up, wrapping around his waist, returning the embrace.
"If that’s how you felt," she murmured against his chest, "you should have said so from the beginning." A soft, almost reluctant laugh escaped her. "Idiot."
Adam huffed a quiet laugh of his own. "A leader can’t afford to look weak."
"A leader also needs to be understood," Lilith countered, pulling back just enough to look up at him. Her crimson eyes were softer than he’d ever seen them—still sharp, still knowing, but with something vulnerable beneath. "But you’re right. This is my fault too. I didn’t ask. I just... assumed and let it fester."
She leaned her head back against his chest, listening to his heartbeat. "We’ll take it slow. As slow as you need." A pause, then a quieter addition: "Even if you did compare me to Alice. That still stings, you know."
Adam winced slightly. "Sorry. That’s because your possessive streak reminded me of her. I didn’t mean—"
"I know." Lilith’s voice was soft, forgiving. "But jealousy and possessiveness are different things, Adam. You should learn to tell them apart."
They stood like that for a long moment, wrapped in each other’s warmth, the fire crackling softly nearby. The night was quiet, the camp peaceful, and for the first time in days, the tension that had been building between them seemed to finally ease.
Adam’s hand came up, gently stroking Lilith’s hair—the same absent motion he’d used earlier, but now with more intention. More meaning.
"This is nice," he admitted quietly.
Lilith hummed in agreement. "It is."
After a moment, she tilted her head up again, a hint of her usual teasing smile returning. "So. Does this mean I’m allowed to keep holding your hand in front of other women?"
Adam snorted. "You were going to do that anyway."
"True." Her smile widened. "But now I have permission. That’s much more satisfying."
Then Lilith pulled back slightly within the circle of his arms, a faint frown creasing her usually serene features. "I feel something strange in my stomach."
Adam’s expression shifted immediately to concern. He released her carefully, stepping back. "You’re probably just exhausted. Today was intense for everyone." He gestured toward her usual spot beneath the cart. "You should rest."
Lilith’s eyes drifted downward—briefly, almost imperceptibly—then back up to his face. A slow, knowing smile curved her lips.
"You’re right," she agreed, her voice carrying that familiar silken warmth. "I should sleep."
But she didn’t move.
Adam blinked. "So... go ahead. I’ll keep watch."
Lilith stepped closer instead—close enough that the space between them vanished. Her hand came up, cool fingers pressing against his cheek with surprising strength. Adam felt the gentle but undeniable pressure guiding his face toward hers.
’Her grip is strong,’ he thought, momentarily caught off guard.
Their lips met.
The kiss was soft at first—tentative, exploring—then deepened with a confidence that was pure Lilith. Her other hand found his shoulder, steadying herself, while her fingers curled against his jaw like she was claiming something precious.
For Adam, time seemed to stop. The fire crackled somewhere in the distance. The wind whispered through the trees. And Lilith’s lips moved against his with a tenderness he’d never expected from someone so deadly.
Then, slowly, she pulled back.
Her crimson eyes fluttered open, soft and warm in a way he’d never seen before. A small, satisfied smile curved her lips with genuinely happy.
"Goodnight, Adam."
She turned and glided away toward the cart, her movements fluid and graceful, leaving Adam standing frozen by the dying fire.
He raised a hand slowly, touching his own lips where the warmth of her kiss still lingered.
"Crap..." The word came out in a dazed whisper. "I got beaten to it."
