Chapter 527: Chapter 527: I am sorry

Isabella did not hesitate.

The moment her brain remembered she was pregnant, bruised, and emotionally damaged by this stupid phoenix man, her body moved on pure instinct.

She swung.

Her palm slapped across Osiris’ arm with a sharp, violent crack that echoed through the clearing. Birds fled from somewhere above them. Leaves trembled. Even the moss on the ground seemed to recoil.

Osiris jerked like she had struck him with lightning. "Ow. Isabella. Stop."

She did not stop.

She slapped him again. Harder. So hard his head snapped to the side and a cloud of crushed moss puffed into the air. "Are you insane. Do you have a death wish. What if I had a miscarriage. What if you killed my children. What is wrong with you. What is actually wrong with your brain."

Osiris shielded his face with both arms. "I protected you. I protected you the entire time. Isabella stop. My face is important."

"Important to who," she snapped, swinging again. "You think because you are tall you can just traumatize people. You think fear is funny."

"I never said that."

"You acted like it."

"I protected your stomach."

"You endangered my soul."

Before he could defend himself further, she lunged and sank her teeth into his shoulder with the full emotional force of a furious pregnant woman who had almost died.

Osiris screamed. Loud. Echoing. Dramatic. "Ow. Isabella. Stop biting me. What is wrong with you. I am not food. Why are your teeth so sharp. OW."

She bit harder.

He slapped the ground helplessly with one hand. "Stop. My skin is new. Do not damage it. Isabella. Isabella. OW. Let go."

"You scared me," she shouted, still latched onto his skin like an angry squirrel. "You scared me, you stupid bird man. You scared me so badly I almost died. I hate you. I hate you. I hate you."

"Let go of my skin. This is my new skin. Ow."

She finally released him and switched to punching his chest.

She punched fast. Hard. Brutally. Each hit delivered with the conviction of a woman who had survived too much stupidity in one lifetime.

Osiris wheezed. "Stop. Please. You are hurting me."

"You deserve it."

"No I do not."

"You do."

"No."

She slapped him again.

"OW. Isabella. Listen. You are not going to have a miscarriage. I protected your stomach with my body."

She froze. Just long enough to process that sentence.

Then her rage tripled.

"Oh. So you think I am stupid."

"What. How did you reach that conclusion."

"You are calling me stupid."

"I did not say that."

"You implied it."

"I did not imply anything."

"You meant it."

"I did not."

"You think I am stupid."

"Isabella. I promise. That is not what I meant."

She punched his shoulder again.

He curled in on himself. "This is abuse."

"This is justice."

She twisted his ear.

"OW. STOP. LET GO OF MY EAR."

"You almost killed me."

"I did not."

"You did."

"I did not."

"You scare me. Then you make me roll off a cliff. Then you insult me. Then you lie."

"I did not lie."

"You lied."

"I did not."

"You lied."

"Isabella."

"Osiris."

"Please."

"No."

Her nails dug into his arm and she shook him violently. Osiris yelped. "My arm. Stop. Stop shaking me. I am fragile."

"Fragile," she repeated, offended beyond measure. "Fragile. You are the least fragile creature on this mountain."

"That is not true. I am very fragile emotionally."

She tackled him.

Literally tackled him.

He fell back with a loud grunt, rolling onto the mossy floor again as she jumped onto him, grabbing his hair and shaking him with all her fury.

"I could have died. My children could have died. All because you wanted to scare me. You absolute demon."

"I am sorry," he said quickly.

"No you are not."

"I am. I swear."

"You are laughing."

"No I am not."

"You are smiling."

"No."

"Yes you are."

"No."

She slapped his cheek.

He grabbed her wrists this time, panting. "Stop. Please. You will actually hurt yourself. Calm down."

"Do not tell me to calm down. I will kill you."

"You cannot kill me."

"I will find a way."

He held her wrists tighter and rolled his body, flipping her onto her back in one smooth movement.

Her breath left her lungs in shock.

She found herself pinned beneath him. His hands gripped her wrists firmly, holding them above her head. His weight pressed her into the soft moss. His hair fell slightly over his forehead. His eyes forced themselves to stay serious instead of mocking, but the tiny curl of a smirk revealed everything.

Isabella glared at him with enough intensity to set the mountain on fire.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly. She was panting from screaming, swinging, biting, twisting, threatening, and almost dying. Her face flushed with rage. Her eyes shone with wet fury.

Osiris breathed hard too, staring down at her with a mixture of confusion, concern, and smugness.

"I did not mean for you to be that scared," he said quietly.

He was lying.

His eyes said it. His stupid little smirk said it. His entire face screamed, I absolutely meant to scare you.

Isabella narrowed her eyes. "Do you think I am an idiot."

He opened his mouth.

Stopped.

Because she was no longer looking at him.

Her fury slowly faded into something else.

Her eyes shifted behind him. To the clearing around them. To the strange brightness without sunlight. To the soft glowing plants. To the silver mist floating above the ground like small ghosts.

Her breath hitched slightly.

Osiris blinked. "Isabella."

She did not answer him.

She looked again.

Her brows knit together.

This place was different.

Different moss. Different smell. Different quality of air. The stone around them shimmered faintly with embedded crystals. Vines hung from curved branch-like roots growing out of rock itself. Small blue lights, like floating fireflies, drifted through the air in slow circles.

She pushed against Osiris’ grip.

"What is this place," she whispered.

Osiris followed her gaze.

It was nothing like the rest of the mountain.

And she had never seen it before.
