Chapter 37: The thing i can’t let go

Blood was flowing from her mouth as Seraphina progressively pushed the blade into his body. Although he tried to stop its progression by grabbing it from the other side, the strength of the vampire was superior.

"I’ve thought a lot about what I would do if I had such a confirmation from you that you were working with the gods. Unfortunately, there are just some things I cannot let slide," declared Seraphina with a dry, emotionless tone.

"S-Seraphina, calm down, I can explain everything to you; it’s not what you think."

"CALM DOWN? EXPLAIN TO ME? HAHAHA LET ME LAUGH! I would have at least understood if you had lied to me or even diverted the subject, but I never would have thought you would throw it in my face like that as if it wasn’t a big deal, knowing my aversion to the gods!!!" she cried, her voice filled with anger and rage.

Seraphina didn’t want to do it, nor did she want to hurt him, because despite the fact that she suspected it, he had never harmed her or forced her into something she didn’t want. But she also knew that many people had approached her without bad intentions; however, he had betrayed her.

That’s why her grip tightened around her blood blade, and it painfully plunged into Aelion’s body, who was on the verge of staggering.

In the end, he had almost regretted his actions. Wasn’t honesty a valued and appreciated quality? That’s what he believed. That’s why, when she asked him questions, his answers were never purely false, only an approximation of the truth. However, today, he had just learned a crucial lesson.

Being honest does not always help in life.

Fortunately, he jealously guarded something that could tip the scales. Instantly, Hope of the Weak, which he kept in his inventory, appeared directly in his free hand. With a quick manipulation, he directed it towards Seraphina while placing his hand on his own shoulder.

Seraphina was surprised but didn’t know how to react to the unknown weapon, not having really understood how it worked.

When the barrel pointing at her head expelled one of the manufactured bullets, she automatically concentrated her blood to block its trajectory. However, the impact was so strong that even she stepped back from the blow, leaving the sword plunged into Aelion’s body, who removed it and threw it to the ground with ease.

Soon, the black blood from his wound was already coagulating, preventing a hemorrhage. His face was no longer so jovial and naive. He was serious and focused. Standing before her, he discreetly inspected his cylinder, deducing the number of remaining bullets.

Only four rounds left.

"Throw it in your face? And that’s it. It’s not like we weren’t talking more about the lack of communication. I fully understood your aversion to the gods, and yes, I admit, I forgot in the heat of the moment. So what? Every time, you let me think it’s because of the gods that you are like this, but tell me concretely what they did to you!!! Every time, you stop and say nothing. What do you want me to do, guess? Of course not. Listen, I made a deal with one of them..." His voice, usually calm, cracked under the pressure.

"Why would I confide in someone I know nothing about? Just because you think I’m physically and sexually attractive, that we’re buddy-buddy? I would have just used you like the others. I don’t give a fuck for your deal, since I can see that you support them. It’s true, if you follow the path you have chosen, you can only go all the way." She shrugged her shoulders, as if she had just stated a trivial truth.

Objectively, Seraphina was right. It took a long time to open up to someone, and seeing how difficult it was for her to talk about it, Aelion blamed himself for his impatience. However, he also had a limit. He couldn’t keep everything to himself under the pretext of being understanding and taking the hit.

The two only talked about magic, ate, apart from training, and flirted. Did she really consider him a stranger and a pawn right now? Because the acceptance rate had reached 70%. So what did that mean? Was she lying? Or was she unable to decide and remained mixed?

On the one hand, Aelion was starting to find his task difficult. Although he had accepted the goddess’s agreement regarding any kind of help, he still didn’t know what it meant to tame wicked people. It seemed impossible to him.

He tried to understand and put himself in her shoes; however, nothing worked as planned. As long as one hasn’t experienced what a person has suffered, one cannot fully understand them. Especially since Seraphina’s behavior and attitude did not seem to fit into a predefined box of the spectrum of human reactions.

"I don’t want it to come to this," pleaded Aelion, who took out his ammunition and shifted the cylinder of Hope of the Weak.

Seraphina looked at him, outlining a small smile on her face.

"Yet you are already preparing yourself. That’s good, I expected no less. Thanks to you, I will send them a message. You will become my emissary by dying," she said, excited, but her voice betrayed a deep bitterness.

Aelion sighed; he really had nothing left to say. He had tried to explain himself, but she was blinded, and he was also tired of always having the position of the one who wanted to settle things calmly.

"Fair enough, I don’t plan on dying today or dying tomorrow," he reminded her, sighing with exaggeration, re-aligning the cylinder in the weapon and pointing it forward.

"Fair enough. Are you counting on your immortality? That’s just a stepping stone. If I want to kill a god, killing you will be the first step."

The vampire knew that no matter what he did, he couldn’t beat her. She was at a much too high level in terms of power. His weapon had just caught her off guard. And she was right, because even while acting confident, Aelion knew he couldn’t win. His revolver had worked because he had filled it with the perfect bullets, including the quasi-indestructible eternal steel that had alarmed his opponent.

However, he had one guarantee, even two. The first was UGAEL, who would answer his call and help him. The second proved to be the Siphoner Scythe; however, that would only be a last resort. So, he decided to play his joker.

Even before he called her, she had already appeared at his side without warning, leaving only a slight gust of wind to announce her arrival under the incredulous eyes of his opponent.

"Looks like you weren’t far."

"Yes, Master. What are your orders?"

"I don’t want to kill her, just neutralize her. I think your current statistics are enough."

The automaton nodded. Mechanical noises engaged in her body, with smoke emanating from her body. She had calibrated herself for the fight.

Seraphina, meanwhile, made two blood blades appear, walking calmly toward the two. A reddish aura followed by a pressure in the air settled. To Aelion, her mana seemed almost unlimited, but that’s where he was surprised.

Because UGAEL had also joined the act of intimidation. The mana she released flowed from her body like a fluctuating pillar-shaped wave. He, the only man who was not at their level, was intimidated and couldn’t even move, not because of UGAEL’s mana which was more dominant, but rather Seraphina’s, which was more violent and savage.

He could even feel her intention towards him. And in one step, Seraphina had lunged at him, her blade ready to pierce his throat. Fortunately, his assistant was present and was superior to Seraphina in every way.

Before she could even reach him, she covered her palm with mana and struck her full in the face, which destabilized her. UGAEL didn’t stop there; she grabbed her face and threw her out of the kitchen into the hall.

The fight had begun, and Aelion hadn’t even been able to react to the first blow. He should prepare himself. The vampire in front of him was no longer holding back; this was the Seraphina who had killed him without mercy.

While he was thinking, the automaton had disappeared with its speed and rejoined her opponent, still on the ground trying to recover. UGAEL jumped, feet together, and plunged towards her with the goal of crushing her.

Fortunately, Seraphina quickly modified the shape of her sword into a tentacular membrane that she embedded in a nearby wall, which allowed her to withdraw from the impact zone caused by the unit, dragging herself along the ground.

When Aelion could finally rejoin the two, UGAEL found herself in the middle of a mini-crater while Seraphina struggled to get up, her face bloody.

Little by little, her anger ignited, and her face reflected the overwhelming emotions she felt; soon, a sadistic laugh filled the entire hall.
