Chapter 171: Ch 171: Another Loss- Part 1

I formed a net of my familiars to block the attack right before it hit my back. And the high priest took this chance to attack me from the front as well.

The heat of the explosions pushed me around, but because of my familiars, I was able to block a lot of the heat out.

Not that it mattered to the high priest, because he took out his own weapon to rush toward me.

He attacked without any mercy, his intention clear—to cut me down. He was not hesitating or pulling back any punches.

Somehow, I managed to break through his guard and raise my scythe to make a harsh blow, only for the high priest to raise his hand. Suddenly, a person stood in front of the high priest, his eyes terrified.

I had to pull my attack back before I hit an innocent person.

"Your compassion is going to be your downfall. You should know when to abandon the people around you."

The high priest told me before he threw the terrified person toward me. I had to let go of my weapon to catch that falling body.

"H-Help me—"

The terrified man cried out as his body fell forward. I moved quickly to grab him and bring him to safety. Or that was what I tried to do before I saw the high priest getting ready to attack both me and that unknown person.

’Fuck this shit—’

My body moved on its own, and I grabbed the innocent man before turning around and forming a barrier using my familiars to block the incoming attack.

The high priest’s attack felt heavy, and it almost pierced my barrier before I managed to hold on. This was getting just too much.

The force of the blast pushed me and the person I had just saved back toward earth. I managed to land on my feet and also keep the other guy from falling or getting hurt.

Once I had my balance, I turned around to face the high priest once more, and he slowly stepped toward me as well.

"You are far too trusting of those around you. A little caution would go a long way for you."

The high priest warned seconds before I felt a sharp, searing pain in my chest. I looked down, only to see a sword piercing my side, and I turned my face around, only to see a blank expression on the civilian I saved.

I did not even have to ask a question to know what happened, because the answer was as clear as day—I had been tricked by the dungeon.

The person I had saved was never a civilian but something being controlled by the high priest.

"You are far too stubborn. Then, allow me to show you the end. Please die and become part of this dungeon."

The high priest raised his weapon, and I tried my best to form another barrier to protect myself. But due to the injury I suffered, I was not able to form a barrier, much less combat properly.

I had a feeling that this might be the end for me. I had no way to protect myself any longer.

’What a waste. I cannot believe I am going out like this. At least I did my best to protect all these people, right?’

I asked, but a part of my heart told me that it was not right. Nothing I did had made any difference in the end.

Accepting my end was not something I wanted to do. But my feet refused to move, even as that weapon came down at me.

Slash

That weapon cut through skin, and a pained gasp reached my ear. Someone collapsed in front of me, and I watched with a numb expression as even the person who made this attack looked surprised.

"K-Kyle... run..."

Kuro’s voice was barely a whisper as he spoke. His form was collapsing under the weight of his injury, and he clutched at himself to keep standing.

It was... just too much and too little at the same time. Kuro had thrown himself into danger in order to save Kyle.

"What a foolish act. Why did you save a human?"

The high priest asked in a calm voice as he stepped toward Kuro. His tilted head told Kyle just how curious he was about this whole ordeal.

But Kuro just panted from where he had collapsed before he pushed himself to give an answer.

"Y-You might not be able to recognize...but Kyle is... special... I cannot allow him to... die... or else..."

Kuro huffed, trying to get the words out but failing to do so. He was starting to lose consciousness as well at this point.

The more Kuro spoke, the more confused the high priest looked. He looked at Kuro as if he were a fool.

"Have your senses been compromised? Not that it matters. Once I absorb you, all your knowledge will become mine."

The high priest took another step toward Kuro, and I tried to stop him. I had a feeling that if he got to Kuro, then everything would be over for him.

"No... stop... what are you doing..."

I asked as I tried to reach Kuro and stop the high priest from doing anything to him. But my body was too tired to move.

Kuro himself did not look that invested in moving away as he closed his eyes and realized.

"It’s fine, Kyle. You do not have to worry about me. No matter where I am, I am too stubborn to die. I will find a way out of this as well."

Kuro assured me as he closed his eyes. The high priest just scoffed at his words, not even gracing him with an answer at this point.

He just looked at Kuro one last time before he stabbed him right where a human heart would be.

I had no idea whether monsters had hearts or not, but Kuro let out a startled yelp before his form broke back into the original one, and he began to fade away.
