Chapter 13: He’s Still My Husband

"I told you earlier, she’s my plus one. As long as we’re both at this party, she is my plus one," he stated, a grin stretching on his lips. "It’s only when we leave here that you can call her your wife." With that, Darien landed a deserving punch on Theodore’s face that immediately knocked the man out of consciousness.

Adeline gasped when she saw Theodore lying on the ground, completely unconscious. She ran over to him to try to wake him up, but he didn’t budge one bit.

"What did you do to him?" She questioned, placing her head on his chest to catch a heartbeat. And when she did, her shoulders dropped in relief.

She stood up and glared hard at Darien who was already staring at her with a confused expression.

"You shouldn’t have done that to him," she reprimanded. "What if something more dangerous had happened? What if...what if you’d killed him?!" She questioned.

"Are you worried about him?" He asked, his confusion only deepening.

He may not be here from the start, but he’d see how scared she seemed of Theodore earlier.

It was obvious he’d done something to scare her like that.

"He’s my husband and the father of my son, of course I worry about him," she said, her glare boring into his dark green eyes.

Indeed, Theodore was starting to show his true colors but she still needed to be careful. And now that he and Darien have bad blood, her chances were only getting slimmer by the second.

Tagging along when Darien came to this party was obviously a bad idea and now she was going to pay for it.

Darien, however, didn’t say anything.

Instead, he looked disappointed.

"You can stay here with your husband for all I care," he said, turning to leave without waiting for another word.

Adeline felt she’d said something she wasn’t supposed to.

Personally, she would want to give Theodore a piece of her own mind, but she still needed to think about Ian.

Darien ignored every single person who tried to speak to him as he exited the so-called anniversary party. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

His pulse was raging beneath his skin, irritation clawing at him when Adeline had called Theodore her husband. He was aware she was married but she was still trying to protect the man who instilled fear in her like nothing had happened.

It made him confused. As he got into his car, he said to his assistant, "Find out what is happening between Adeline and Theodore Westwood. Every single thing about their marriage," he instructed.

The assistant was stunned for a second, wondering why his boss was suddenly interested in the Westwood family but he didn’t say anything of that sort.

He simply nodded. "I’ll be right on it, boss."

Hours later, Theodore woke up in a familiar room. He checked the surroundings only to find that he was in his room, the same room he shared with Adeline while she was still living with him.

The room was dark, making it difficult to see. Suddenly, the door opened.

"Adeline?" He called out, eyes ready to settle on his wife.

The light switch was turned on, making it easier to see.

However, the presence of Adeline he thought he felt wasn’t the person standing before him. It was his secretary, Lina.

After Adeline had found out about his infidelity, Lina had started living in his house.

"You wanted to see Adeline?" She questioned, her face scowling at him.

She couldn’t believe her ears.

Theodore didn’t respond to her question. Instead, his hand gripped his head, suddenly remembering what had happened before he’d lost consciousness.

Darien had punched him in the face. Adeline had gone to that celebration with Darien of all people and he’d attacked him by knocking him out unconscious.

"Who brought me back?" He asked.

Lina’s face darkened when he didn’t answer her question. But she didn’t say anything regarding that.

"Adeline thought you back here," she replied, walking towards him with the bowl of water and towel in her hands. "She said you were involved in a fight and that I should take care of you." She added with a smile to her lips, knowing fully well that wasn’t what Adeline told her to do. Adeline didn’t care enough to ask her to take care of Theodore.

She’d simply dropped him off at their doorstep and driven away like she was delivering a package.

"Now, why were you searching for Adeline? Did you expect to see her here?" It was obvious she wasn’t going to let go of that question and Theodore could clearly see through the trap she’d set for him.

"Yes, I was. Is that a problem?" He questioned back, feeling all high and mighty with his shameless temerity.

Lina didn’t reply at all.

Instead, she smiled as she placed the cloth into the water and pressed the cloth on his head.

"You should rest while I have the butler prepare dinner for us."

Once she left the room, her smile faltered. She’d worked hard to snatch this man and somehow, he only started wanting to be close to his wife now that she’d left him for good.

’I’ll never let that happen,’ she thought to herself.

At the Donovan estate where Adeline lived with her grandfather, they were having a peaceful family dinner while the old man tried to crack a joke once or twice with Ian who laughed at his great-grandfather’s jokes.

"Mother, when is father coming to see us? It’s been a while since I saw him," said Ian.

Adeline’s hand which she was using to feed him paused in the air.

She glanced at her grandfather who stared at her.

"Your father is going to see you soon, son," she said with a forced smile. "Don’t worry. I’ll tell him one of these days to come see you."

Ian blinked at him with his blue eyes he got from his mother.

"Are you and father fighting?" He asked with an innocent look. "Are the two of you going to get a divorce?"
