Chapter 516: 519. Anan is missing

Shen Qinglan and Pei Yinong had been shopping in the mall for a good while before they finally found a tablecloth they were satisfied with. Just as they walked out of the mall, Shen Qinglan’s phone rang. It was a call from Anan’s class teacher, Teacher Xiao Xie.

"Hello, Teacher Xiao Xie," Shen Qinglan’s voice was gentle.

"Mrs. Fu," Teacher Xiao Xie’s voice betrayed her urgency.

Shen Qinglan frowned, a bad premonition growing inside her, "Teacher Xiao Xie, what’s wrong?"

"Mrs. Fu, Anan is missing," Teacher Xiao Xie’s voice now carried a sob.

Shen Qinglan’s expression changed dramatically, "What did you say, Anan is missing? Where are you right now?"

"We are at the wildlife zoo."

"I’ll rush over immediately."

Pei Yinong had overheard Shen Qinglan’s conversation and, seeing her anxious demeanor, immediately understood what had happened, "Qinglan, I’ll come with you."

On the way, Shen Qinglan ran several red lights, reaching the wildlife zoo with the fastest speed. Teacher Xiao Xie was waiting for her at the entrance.

"Teacher Xiao Xie, what exactly happened?" Shen Qinglan asked as soon as she got out of the car.

Teacher Xiao Xie, with reddened eyes from recent tears, said, "Mrs. Fu, Anan disappeared. He said he wanted to go to the bathroom, so I waited outside. But after waiting a while and not seeing him come out, I went in to look for him, and he wasn’t there. I’ve looked for him for a long time without success."

Shen Qinglan’s face turned grim, "Have you searched the entire zoo?"

"All the teachers are looking, and the zoo staff as well, but we haven’t found him."

Before calling Shen Qinglan, Teacher Xiao Xie had asked for help and even used the PA system to seek Anan, but to no avail. Finally, she had to call Shen Qinglan as a last resort.

"Qinglan, check the surveillance first," Pei Yinong said.

It was like a wake-up call. Without another word, Shen Qinglan headed for the zoo’s surveillance room, but the staff there refused to let her watch, "Ma’am, I understand the urgency you feel about your lost child, but surveillance isn’t for just anyone to view. If everyone did as you wish, how could we get on with our work?"

Shen Qinglan’s eyes grew cold. Without any further discussion, she called the zoo director’s office directly and revealed her identity. The director soon appeared in the surveillance room, "Mrs. Fu, I never expected such a thing to happen in our zoo. I am truly sorry." The director apologized as soon as they met.

"Director, this isn’t the time for apologies; what’s important is that you help me find my child," Shen Qinglan cut him off, devoid of any patience for platitudes.

"Yes, yes, finding the child is what’s important," the director agreed, scolding the security staff in the surveillance room, "Don’t just stand there, bring up the surveillance footage."

The guard, surprised that his refusal had summoned the director, and with a heart pounding, complied subconsciously when the director ordered.

Shen Qinglan carefully watched the surveillance footage, and just as Teacher Xiao Xie had described, Anan went into the bathroom but never came out.

"Bring up the surveillance from the main entrance," Shen Qinglan ordered coldly.

"Qinglan, there’s nobody," Pei Yinong said with a grim face, "Could it be that Anan is still in the zoo?"

Upon hearing this, the director promptly said, "Quick, find someone. Even if we have to turn the zoo inside out, we must find the child." He also silently lamented his misfortune; of all people, it had to be the Crown Prince of the Fu Family who went missing, a child of supreme importance.

At this moment, the zoo director could only hope that Anan was simply mischievous, had wandered off, and was still in the zoo. If it turned out to be an abduction, even he didn’t know how he would explain it to the Fu Family.

The kindergarten director was even more anxious than the zoo director, as it was their organization that brought the children to the zoo, where one got lost.

"How could you let him go to the bathroom alone at his age?" the kindergarten director chastised Teacher Xiao Xie harshly. Teacher Xiao Xie, head bowed, wiping away tears, replied, "At the time, another little friend needed to use the restroom, a little girl, so I took the girl first. Anan usually goes by himself at kindergarten, so I let him go. I never imagined he would just disappear." Teacher Xiao Xie felt wronged; it truly wasn’t her fault, nor was it deliberate, but she knew it was too late for excuses. Whether or not Anan was found, her job was unquestionably over.

"Why are you still standing here? Go find someone quickly, does crying help?" The director, furious in his heart, berated Teacher Xiao Xie for bringing such trouble and for having the audacity to cry about it.

Teacher Xiao Xie’s body shook slightly, and she hurried off to find Anan. Shen Qinglan continued to scrutinize the surveillance in the room. No sightings at the front gate, so she moved on to check the back door and the surrounding cameras.

Now hours had passed since Anan went missing, and there was too much footage to watch all at once. Shen Qinglan’s face remained composed as she kept her gaze fixed on the monitor, not even blinking, although her eyes were sore and weary.

From the moment she learned the news, she had maintained this calm demeanor, but the sweat in her palms continued to grow. It felt as if a volcano was welling up inside her heart, ready to erupt at any moment.

Pei Yinong had joined the others in looking for Anan, and over the zoo’s PA system, messages to find Anan were being broadcast on a loop.

Time ticked away by the second, and beads of sweat appeared on Shen Qinglan’s forehead, the desperation in her eyes intensifying. Her phone rang; it was Old Sir Fu. Shen Qinglan composed herself before answering, "Grandfather ... I’m out eating with Anan, yes. You eat first. I’ll take Anan out for a bit longer; we’ll be back late, alright, no need to wait for us."

After hanging up, Shen Qinglan returned her attention to the surveillance videos. She had a strong feeling that Anan was no longer in the zoo, and she needed to find the direction in which he was taken. Otherwise, she wouldn’t even know which way to begin tracking.

The golden window for rescue was within 48 hours. If they didn’t find Anan within this time frame, Shen Qinglan dared not think what Anan might endure. Her pupils darkened, and the suppressed fury was surfacing. No presence at the front gate, back door, north, east, no sign anywhere ...

Shen Qinglan, you mustn’t panic, you must stay calm. Anan is waiting for you. If you falter, what will happen to him? You’re a mother; you must stay composed.

She repeatedly told herself this inwardly.

"Qinglan, we’ve almost searched the entire zoo and there’s still no sign of Anan," Pei Yinong said anxiously. Beside her was Jingjing’s mother, who, upon learning that the child lost was Anan, volunteered to join the search team. The nursery school was forced to halt its activities, and when the headmaster notified the parents to pick up their children, Jingjing’s mother stepped forward.

Shen Qinglan seemed not to hear Pei Yinong. She was staring intently at the monitor, then suddenly her eyes narrowed, "Wait, rewind this for five seconds." Shen Qinglan pointed at one of the CCTV footages.

As the footage rewound, it stopped on the camera facing the west side of the zoo, where the Siberian tigers lived. The video showed two men carrying a child through the tiger enclosure and climbing over the fence. The child appeared to be asleep as the men had wrapped his face in their clothing, rendering him unrecognizable. However, Shen Qinglan instantly recognized Anan’s shoes. Fu Hengyi had those shoes custom made just for his son; there was only one pair in the world, a birthday gift for Anan. Anan had specifically requested to wear them today, and Shen Qinglan was certain she wasn’t mistaken.

Shen Qinglan pushed the security guard out of the chair and took over the computer herself. The screen went black for a moment before an incomprehensible stream of code appeared. Soon, the monitors were no longer displaying scenes from inside the zoo but were showing the CCTV footage from outside the western tiger enclosure.

"Qinglan, they got into this black sedan," Pei Yinong pointed towards the car at the western corner.

Shen Qinglan nodded in acknowledgment, her focus locked on the black car and quickly dialed Fu Hengyi’s number. Fu Hengyi had just arrived back at the dormitory and had not yet even taken off his clothes when he received the call from Shen Qinglan.

"What, I understand. I’ll have people intercept that car right away. Don’t panic; I’m coming back immediately," said Fu Hengyi without further ado. Hanging up, he dialed a series of numbers, "Northwest direction, a black Volkswagen, license plate number XXXXX, intercept it immediately. The people in that car took my son, yes, three years old."

Fu Hengyi’s face was grim as he sped along the road toward the northwest, almost pushing the car to its limits.

"Qinglan, report the car’s movements to me; I’m on the road," Fu Hengyi spoke gravely.

Shen Qinglan, now also en route to the rescue, knew that time was equivalent to money; the sooner they found Anan, the sooner the child would be out of danger. Shen Qinglan couldn’t be sure if these men were simply human traffickers or if there was a more insidious plot at play. She couldn’t help but recall her own childhood kidnapping experience, her eyes growing darker and more menacing by the moment.

Anyone meeting Shen Qinglan’s gaze now would feel as if they were staring into hell itself.

"Fu Hengyi, I’m on my way," Shen Qinglan said grimly. Before setting off, she had called Jin Enxi, asking her to monitor the vehicle. She relayed to Fu Hengyi the information Jin Enxi had provided her.

"Fu Hengyi, they’ve split into four directions in the suburbs of Beijing, with people ready to pick them up. It must be an organized operation. Your people should cover the east and south, I’ll head north, you go west."

"Alright, be careful going alone, and contact me immediately if anything happens," Fu Hengyi responded soberly before receiving another call from Jin Enxi, updating him on the positions and descriptions of the four vehicles. However, since there weren’t CCTV cameras everywhere, Jin Enxi couldn’t continuously track all of them and could only update them on their locations intermittently.

Without knowing which car Anan was in, Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi had no choice but to cover all four directions, making the pursuit akin to finding a needle in a haystack.

Fu Hengyi made several calls to set up roadblocks to intercept the suspected vehicles. Despite starting later than the suspect cars, Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi eventually caught up. Unfortunately, Anan wasn’t in any of the four vehicles.

"Talk, where is the child you took?" Shen Qinglan’s cold voice demanded as she gripped the driver’s shirt collar.

The driver, staring fearfully at Shen Qinglan, thought she must be mad; she had charged head-on at such high speed just moments before, "I—I don’t know what you’re talking about! What child, there is no child." The driver denied knowing anything.

The icy chill in Shen Qinglan’s eyes deepened as she fixed her gaze on him, "At 3:10 this afternoon, you took a three-year-old boy from Jingcheng Zoo wearing a pair of blue shoes. Where is the child now?"

The driver’s heart skipped a beat; he hadn’t expected that someone was actually coming for that child. Who was this woman, and how had she caught up to them so quickly? His heart was filled with questions, but he kept a calm exterior. "I don’t know what you’re talking about. I was about to ask you the same thing. Why are you chasing me, and why did you hit my car? I’m telling you, you could be charged with attempted murder for that."

Shen Qinglan ignored the driver’s bluster and dragged him out of the car, kicking him squarely in the chest. The driver grunted in pain.

Yet she didn’t let up; she stepped directly on his chest, causing his face to turn deathly pale. "Where is the child?" she demanded.

The driver felt as if all his organs were shattering, coughing continuously. "The child... the child isn’t with me."

"Speak, where is the child?"

"West... they headed west," blurted the driver, not daring to lie to this fierce goddess. He feared that if he didn’t speak now, he might never get the chance. This woman clearly had training; he, a grown man, stood no chance against her, and he didn’t know the identity of the child they had kidnapped.

West was precisely the direction Fu Hengyi had pursued. Shen Qinglan called Fu Hengyi, who had been about to call her as well, "Qinglan, Anan has escaped."

As soon as they connected, Fu Hengyi started speaking. Shen Qinglan’s gaze hardened. "What do you mean?"

"They stopped for a break, and Anan took the chance to run away."

Shen Qinglan hadn’t expected such a twist, "Can you determine which direction Anan went?"

"Not at the moment," Fu Hengyi said gravely. "I’ve already contacted the local police— they will do everything they can to help us find the child. Come and meet up with me first." The child was no longer in the hands of the traffickers, and they had narrowed down the area of his disappearance; there was no point in Shen Qinglan staying there any longer.

Shen Qinglan agreed and, before leaving, tied the driver up and left him on the roadside, then phoned the police to report his location.

When she arrived at the Lin City Police Department, Fu Hengyi was waiting for her at the entrance. "Fu Hengyi, is there any news on Anan?" Shen Qinglan asked urgently as soon as they met.

Fu Hengyi shook his head. "Not for now, but don’t panic. I’ve already had people search the nearby area; he’s so small, he wouldn’t have gone far. We’ll probably find him soon." As a man, Fu Hengyi was calmer than Shen Qinglan, even though he was also very anxious at this point. But in front of Shen Qinglan, he had to remain composed; in times like this, he was her rock.

How could Shen Qinglan not be worried? Anan was only three years old, in an unfamiliar place—where could he go? But she knew that panicking wouldn’t help find the child, so she forced herself to calm down.

Fu Hengyi’s men were still tracking the remaining traffickers, and he hadn’t called them back. The cooperation from the Lin City local police meant they had enough people searching.

The town where Anan had escaped was under the jurisdiction of Lin City, a large town nearly the size of a small city, and because it was at a transportation hub, there was a lot of through traffic, making it hard to say whether Anan might have been taken by someone else after escaping from the traffickers.

Anan was only three years old, with a cherubic face, incredibly adorable. If someone with malicious intent had seen him, he would have gone from the tiger’s den into the wolf’s lair.

Now it was getting dark. Old Sir Fu called again, this time Fu Hengyi answered, "Grandpa, yes, Qinglan, Anan, and I are together. I was missing Anan, so I had Qinglan bring him over to stay for a couple of days. We’ll head back in a few days. I’ve already asked for leave from work, so it’s all good."

Having calmed the old sir, Fu Hengyi turned to the silent Shen Qinglan, "Qinglan, don’t worry, I will definitely find Anan."

Shen Qinglan stared at the ground. They had just returned from outside. "Fu Hengyi, I’m scared," she said softly. Having herself experienced those terrifying things, she was always extremely cautious with her child. If they ever went out, she would never let Anan out of her sight. She never imagined that a mishap would occur during the nursery’s organized group activity.

Fu Hengyi certainly knew what she was afraid of. He held her hand, "Qinglan, Anan is a smart child. Despite his young age, he knows how to protect himself. He will be fine, see? Hasn’t he already escaped from the human traffickers?"

Although Fu Hengyi said so, he didn’t actually feel certain in his heart. After all, Anan was only three years old. He could only escape because the human traffickers did not anticipate a three-year-old child could escape from the car. Wait a second, Fu Hengyi’s eyes paused, realizing they had just overlooked a very important detail.

How exactly did Anan escape from a locked car? Could it be that the human trafficker didn’t take the keys with him? Fu Hengyi let go of Shen Qinglan and immediately approached the trafficker, who was bruised from the beating he had received from Fu Hengyi. Seeing Fu Hengyi approaching, he instinctively shrank back, "When you left, was the car door locked? Were the keys in the car or on you?"

"They were... on me," the trafficker said tremblingly, already frightened by Fu Hengyi’s assault. When Fu Hengyi caught up to him, he feared he might be beaten to death.

Fu Hengyi’s gaze grew utterly dark. From the moment Fu Hengyi had asked the question, Shen Qinglan understood what he meant - indeed, they had overlooked this detail.

They had assumed Anan had escaped from the car on his own. But think about it, how could a three-year-old child have the capability to open a car door? Had it been Shen Qinglan or Fu Hengyi, it wouldn’t have been difficult, but for Anan, even if he was smart, it would have been impossible.

Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi exchanged a glance, both realizing the gravity of the situation. Anan couldn’t have come out of the car by himself, which meant someone else must have taken him out of the car and then escorted him away.

This person clearly wasn’t an accomplice of the human traffickers, so was it a well-meaning passerby or someone with ulterior motives lurking in the shadows?

Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi couldn’t determine. The color of anxiety in Shen Qinglan’s heart thickened, she didn’t know what to do; she was utterly in disarray. The last time she felt like this was when Fu Hengyi was ambushed by Allen and King. Facing the two most important people in her life, she couldn’t stay calm.

"Qinglan, you rest here for a while, I will go out to look for the child. I will notify you immediately once there’s any news," Fu Hengyi said, seeing the tiredness and anxiety in her eyes, feeling heartache.

Shen Qinglan shook her head; how could she possibly sit down now, with her mind full of Anan.

"I’ll come with you. If I stay here alone, I’ll only worry more," she replied.

The local police were also making full efforts to find Anan’s whereabouts. Fu Hengyi and Shen Qinglan had not slept all night, nearly scouring the entire town, but Anan was still nowhere to be found.

The next morning, when the two returned to update each other with the news that neither had found anything, they went out again to continue the search. At this moment, Shen Qinglan suddenly understood the feelings Chu Yunrong had when she lost her; even she had a feeling as if the sky was falling and the earth was splitting, let alone Chu Yunrong.

When they came back to touch base again, they finally had some results. Fu Hengyi learned from a local shopkeeper that a man had taken a child from a car yesterday afternoon.

Fu Hengyi showed the shopkeeper a photo of Anan, and he recognized him at once; the child taken by the man was indeed Anan.

Fu Hengyi carefully inquired about what the man looked like, but the shopkeeper had only glanced casually at the time and hadn’t paid much attention. After all, the man had simply opened the car door, not smashed it, appearing as though he was the car’s owner merely taking out the child. Moreover, since Anan wasn’t crying or fussing, it naturally didn’t attract his attention.

"You’re saying that the child didn’t cry or make a fuss when that man took him away?" Shen Qinglan caught an important point in his words.

The resident nodded.

"Was the child awake at the time?" Fu Hengyi pressed further.

The resident nodded again, "Awake. I even saw the child hugging the man’s neck. I thought they were father and son at the time."

Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi exchanged glances. It seemed that the person who took Anan was an acquaintance. Since Anan began talking, Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi had always taught him not to go with strangers, so there was no way Anan would willingly go with someone he did not know.

"My fellow villager, can you please think carefully about what that man looked like?" Shen Qinglan asked in as calm a tone as possible.

"I really can’t remember clearly, I only noticed because the child was pretty, so I took a few more glances. I remember the child, but not the man. However, he was quite tall, yes, about your height," he was referring to Fu Hengyi, "and a bit slimmer than you."

"Oh right, he had dyed brown hair, but I really can’t remember his face." The resident told them whatever he could remember.

"Then, fellow villager, did you see which direction they went in?" Fu Hengyi asked next. Having a direction was essential for pursuing the investigation; otherwise, in the vast sea of people, how would they find them?

The resident thought hard and then slapped his head, "The man came in a car, a white Chevrolet. At that time, it was... yes, they went in that direction." He pointed in one direction.

Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi’s expressions had completely darkened. According to the resident’s indicated direction, that was the road leading out of town. If he remembered correctly, there was an eight or nine out of ten chance that Anan had been taken out of the town.

"Fellow villager, do you remember the car’s license plate number?"

The resident shook his head, "I really can’t recall that." At the time, he honestly thought they were father and son. How could he have thought of so much else? Besides, he had been busy with his shop, and there was only so much he could remember.

The situation seemed to have hit a dead end. Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi sat in the Lin City Police Department chief’s office, silent and speechless.

A white Chevrolet, that description was too vague. Such cars were commonplace; they could easily find dozens of them. How were they supposed to conduct a search with so little to go on?

Shen Qinglan leaned on Fu Hengyi, exhausted. They had already sent out the missing person notice for Anan, and were currently waiting for news.

"Fu Hengyi, Anan won’t be in danger, right?" Shen Qinglan spoke softly, her voice completely hoarse. Fu Hengyi nodded, "Right, Anan won’t be in danger. Think about it, Anan is so clever, he wouldn’t go with a stranger. The person who took Anan is definitely someone we know. Perhaps we’ll get news soon."

"If it really is an acquaintance, they surely know we’d be worried and would have called us by now." Shen Qinglan was not as optimistic as Fu Hengyi. She could not guess the identity and motive of the person who took Anan. Moreover, it seemed the person knew how to counter-surveillance, as Jin Enxi had not managed to track down any effective information from any of the surveillance footage.

Shen Qinglan’s nerves were taut, any small disturbance could set her on edge.

After three consecutive days, Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi hadn’t received any news about Anan. The situation could no longer be concealed; Old Sir Shen and Old Sir Fu had been informed of Anan’s disappearance. Chu Yunrong fainted on the spot, and although the two old masters did not faint, their condition was hardly any better.

"Qinglan, you go home first; I’ll wait for news here." Shen Qinglan hadn’t closed her eyes for three days and nights, and Fu Hengyi was genuinely worried she wouldn’t be able to handle it.

Shen Qinglan shook her head, "I can’t rest easy if I go back now. Let me stay here." At least she could receive news right away.

Fu Hengyi saw that persuasion was ineffective and gave up trying to persuade her; he needed to continue the search. "Then rest here for a bit, and I’ll go out and look around again."

Shen Qinglan nodded. All she could do now was to try not to make Fu Hengyi worry about her anymore.

Their search was like looking for a needle in a haystack, so naturally, they returned without success. Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi sat in the hotel room and painstakingly went through all the possible enemies once more but could not understand who could have taken Anan. Qin Yan was already dead, and her housekeeper was dead too, meaning their enemies had apparently been taken care of. Furthermore, what was the purpose of taking Anan? It wasn’t for money; if it were for money, they should have already called to demand a ransom. Or was it someone Anan knew—a group many times smaller, with no necessity to take Anan.

"Fu Hengyi, do you think I’ll never see Anan again?" Shen Qinglan’s voice was hoarse as she spoke, and Fu Hengyi consoled her, "No, I will find Anan no matter the cost. Believe me."

Shen Qinglan’s eyes were filled with bloodshot veins, her expression exhausted. These past few days, her nerves had been stretched to the limit, a truly dangerous state. Fu Hengyi was genuinely worried that Shen Qinglan could not hold on.

"Fu Hengyi, where is Du Nan?" Shen Qinglan suddenly opened her eyes and asked, "Where is he now?"

In a daze, Shen Qinglan suddenly remembered Du Nan—if there was anyone who hated her the most, it certainly would be Du Nan.

As if a voice awoke someone from a dream, yes—they had completely forgotten about him while eliminating potential suspects. Previously, they had cunningly sent Du Nan to a mental institution, and although it was because of his own doing, it was not impossible for a resentful Du Nan to do something crazy.

Fu Hengyi immediately called the mental hospital, then shook his head. "Du Nan has been at the mental institution these past few days; he hasn’t left the doctor’s sight."

The light in Shen Qinglan’s eyes instantly went out. She sat frozen on the edge of the bed, feeling a chill all over. Fu Hengyi embraced her, "Qinglan, don’t overthink it. Anan will be alright. No news doesn’t necessarily mean bad news." He whispered comforting words, even as his own heart was in turmoil. Seeing Shen Qinglan like this, he was even more concerned she would break down first.

"Fu Hengyi, I’m okay." She wouldn’t have any issues before they found the child.

The two old men from each family knew about the child’s disappearance and mobilized their connections. The search for Anan grew significantly larger, not just covering Lin City but spreading to much of Z country. Shen Junyu even offered a reward—anyone who could provide real and effective information about Anan could receive a reward ranging from one hundred thousand to one million.

Despite such extensive search efforts, Anan seemed to have vanished from the face of the earth, without a trace to be found.

**

In Lin City, inside a hotel room, Shen Qinglan lay on the big bed with furrowed brows and a pale face; sweat beaded on her forehead. She was having the same dream about the time she was kidnapped as a child.

The dim and damp room, the foul odor of excrement, children curled up in a corner with faces full of terror, a girl covered in bruises... Blood slowly flowing on the ground, and vague screams of agony...

"No." Shen Qinglan sat up from her nightmare, breathing rapidly. Fu Hengyi was on the phone with someone when he heard the noise and hurriedly hung up to come in. "Qinglan, what’s wrong?"

Shen Qinglan had a blank look in her eyes, unfocused. Upon hearing Fu Hengyi’s voice, her eyes moved slightly, and she slowly turned to look at him, "Fu Hengyi, I dreamt Anan was calling me, he was covered in blood."

"Qinglan, it’s not real, those were just dreams, and dreams are the opposite of reality. Anan must be alright now." Fu Hengyi tenderly comforted her. He had drugged the water he was giving Shen Qinglan to drink, hoping to let her have a proper sleep; she had been strung out for days, and it wouldn’t take much for her to snap.

Fu Hengyi’s reassurance did nothing. A sea of red clouded Shen Qinglan’s vision, the inescapable scene from her nightmare. A hostile aura began to fill her.

"Fu Hengyi, I want to see that human trafficker again. Maybe I can get a clue from him."

Fu Hengyi looked steadily into her eyes and, after a long moment, nodded slowly. "Okay, I’ll go with you."

Lin City Police Department interrogation room.

Shen Qinglan coldly regarded the human trafficker Fu Hengyi had captured, "You had better think carefully about where exactly my son is."

The trafficker had been interrogated for days without proper rest, his nerves on the brink of collapse, "I’ve told you everything I know, there’s really no omission."

"Who instructed you? Why did you kidnap my son?"

This particular trafficker was one of those who had taken Anan from the kindergarten, "At the time, we just thought the kid was cute, a boy. We figured he’d fetch a good price, so it was a spur-of-the-moment decision; nobody directed us."

He was filled with regret now. Of all the people, why did he have to mess with that child? He thought the kid was from an ordinary family, and that selling him would be quick and easy, just like all their previous jobs. They had no idea that the child was the Beijing Fu Family’s little grandson. If the boy had still been in their hands, things would have been salvageable, but now with the child gone, they were unable to clear themselves of blame.

Shen Qinglan’s pupils were deep black, as if condensed into a bottomless abyss. She seized the trafficker’s throat, "You had better tell me the truth. Was it really a spur-of-the-moment decision, or was someone instructing you?"

"It was truly spur-of-the-moment, not under anyone’s instruction," the trafficker insisted hurriedly, feeling the pressure on his neck. He knew the woman before him was seriously contemplating killing him, and he dared not lie.

"Every word I’m saying is the truth, believe me!"

Shen Qinglan wasn’t in any state to listen to these words. She was aching to dismember the person in front of her, to say she hated human traffickers, those utterly devoid of conscience, would be an understatement.

As the trafficker’s eyes began to roll back, Fu Hengyi quickly embraced Shen Qinglan, "Qinglan, calm down." If something happened to him in the police station... That would be Shen Qinglan’s problem.

Shen Qinglan regained some sense of reason from Fu Hengyi’s call and gradually let go of her grip.

Fu Hengyi’s phone rang. He picked it up immediately; it was an unfamiliar number. The moment the call connected, Fu Hengyi’s expression changed drastically. He handed the phone to Shen Qinglan.

"Mommy." When the tender voice of her child reached her from the other end of the phone, Shen Qinglan’s tears instantly fell.
