The Tycoon's Mysterious Darling Wife-Chapter 518 - 521. Accident
Shen Qinglan had never expected that the person who took Anan away would be Allen, and even less that Allen was actually still alive. Her eyes trembled lightly as her gaze fell upon Anan, who was already running toward Shen Qinglan.
"Mommy," Shen Qinglan squatted down and hugged Anan in her arms, "Anan, you scared mommy to death."
"Mommy, I missed you so much," Anan’s childish voice carried a cry.
Shen Qinglan’s eyes reddened slightly, "Mommy missed you too." The heart that had been hanging in suspense finally settled in that moment. Fu Hengyi followed behind Shen Qinglan, glancing at the embracing mother and child before his eyes fell on Allen.
He and Shen Qinglan had guessed everyone but had never thought that the person who took Anan would be him; after all, they had believed that Allen might have been dead, or even if he were alive, he wouldn’t show up in Lin City.
"Let me explain this. It wasn’t him who took Anan away; it was me." Peter stepped forward to speak, not wanting Shen Qinglan to misunderstand Allen; Allen wasn’t one to explain himself, and if there were a misunderstanding, he probably wouldn’t clarify it.
Anan nodded along, adding, "Mommy, he was the one who took me and wouldn’t let me go home." He seized the chance to tattle, leaving Peter with an embarrassed expression; the vengeful little one began his complaints as soon as they met.
"But that uncle was very nice to me," Anan added, this time referring to Allen.
Shen Qinglan’s gaze barely skimmed Peter before settling on Allen, who was looking at her, his eyes warm and smiling as he spoke, "Let’s go inside first." His voice was still hoarse and unpleasant, but it contained a different kind of tenderness.
As they entered the house, Shen Qinglan looked at Allen, remaining silent for a long while until Fu Hengyi spoke first, "Thank you."
No matter what, Allen had rescued Anan from the hands of the human trafficker, and judging by Anan’s current condition, it was clear that he had not suffered any hardship over these three days; instead, he had been well cared for.
Faced with Fu Hengyi, the smile on Allen’s face faded, "I didn’t do it for you." He still wanted to kill the man before him.
Having stayed in Shen Qinglan’s arms long enough, Anan ran over to Fu Hengyi, looking up at Daddy, "Daddy."
Fu Hengyi touched his head, "Yes, Daddy and Mommy have come to take you home."
Anan smiled with glee, nodding his head, then remembered something and ran to Allen’s side, "Uncle, you’re really nice, nicer than he is." He pointed at Peter.
Allen’s gaze became tender as he reached out to touch Anan’s face, "From now on, you need to listen to Daddy and Mommy and not run off."
Anan nodded vigorously, "Uncle, can I come see you again in the future?" He liked this uncle.
"That’s up to your Daddy and Mommy."
Anan turned to look at Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi, "Daddy, Mommy, can I come see Uncle again in the future? He was really nice to me."
Shen Qinglan’s eyes were deep and unspoken, but Fu Hengyi had already spoken, "You can."
Anan’s eyes brightened, "Uncle, my Daddy said I can come see you again in the future."
Allen hadn’t expected the first to agree would be Fu Hengyi, and he looked at him in some surprise, with Fu Hengyi’s expression remaining inscrutable, revealing nothing of his thoughts.
"Uncle, I’m going to head home with Mom and Dad now. I’ll come see you next time, or you can come and visit our house," Anan invited Allen.
"Sure, I’ll definitely come to visit your house when I have the chance," Allen said gently, his gaze turning towards Shen Qinglan. Shen Qinglan’s look was complex, but ultimately, it turned into a simple "thank you." She was thanking him for rescuing Anan, and also for being alive.
A tender look flickered in Allen’s eyes, "No need to thank me."
Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi left with Anan. Peter looked at Allen, somewhat frustrated, "Just like that, you let them leave? You should have stayed and had a meal together at least." He had gone to so much trouble to have Allen meet Shen Qinglan, only for them to leave just like that.
"Peter, don’t let it happen again," Allen said indifferently.
Peter touched his nose, knowing Allen referred to the matter of having Shen Qinglan over, "Got it."
"Mommy, did you miss me? I missed you a lot," Anan snuggled into Shen Qinglan’s embrace and refused to leave it on the way back. Shen Qinglan stroked her son’s head, "I missed you too, Mommy was very worried about you."
"I knew Mommy would be worried about me. Mommy, I was very brave and didn’t cry." Anan’s little face beamed with pride. He really hadn’t cried when the human trafficker took him away.
"Anan has grown up. Mommy is very happy."
"But, Mommy, are you really friends with that uncle? Why didn’t you talk to him just now?" Anan wondered. He had friends, and when he was with his friends, they never ran out of things to say. Why then did Shen Qinglan not talk to Allen when they met?
Upon hearing this, Shen Qinglan appeared conflicted but then offered a smile, "Mommy and that uncle... are indeed friends. It’s just that we haven’t seen each other for such a long time, we didn’t know what to say."
"Oh," Anan murmured, not quite understanding. "Mommy, can you take me to see him next time?" Even before they had left Lin City, Anan was already thinking about the next visit.
Shen Qinglan looked down at her son, "Do you really like that uncle?"
Anan nodded, "That uncle was so nice to me. Even though he didn’t tell me stories, he bought me lots of toys and new clothes, bathed me, helped me brush my teeth, and played games with me..." Anan counted off the things Allen had done for him on his fingers.
Shen Qinglan’s eyes were filled with surprise and contemplation; it was difficult for her to reconcile the Allen Anan described with the one she knew. But she did owe him thanks for this incident, even though he had hidden Anan away for three days.
"Okay, Mommy will take you to see him next time," Shen Qinglan said softly. Her feelings toward Allen were complicated. He represented the biggest shadow of the year for her, a presence in all her painful memories. The endless missions and trials, the friends who had lost their lives because of them, and yet Allen had also genuinely helped her many times. He was once the man she hated most, the one she wanted to get rid of the most, but now he had become someone to whom she owed a debt.
Hearing Shen Qinglan’s agreement to visit Allen again, Anan immediately smiled, "Mommy, you’re so good." He snuggled into Shen Qinglan’s embrace and soon began to yawn. Although he had been well taken care of these past few days, it wasn’t the same as being with his parents, and somewhere deep inside, he was still uneasy. Now that he was back with his parents, he could truly relax.
Fu Hengyi glanced at his son in the rearview mirror and said to Shen Qinglan, "It’ll be another two or three hours before we get home; you should get some sleep first." In the past few days, aside from being sedated by his hand that day, she barely had any rest.
Shen Qinglan shook her head, "Let’s switch places at the next rest area instead." She had at least gotten a few hours of sleep; Fu Hengyi really hadn’t closed his eyes at all, and not even the strongest person could handle going days and nights without sleep.
"Alright, we’re about an hour away from the next rest area. You sleep first so you’ll have the energy to take over later," Fu Hengyi urged gently.
His reasoning made sense, and Shen Qinglan didn’t refuse. She closed her eyes to rest, intending to nap briefly but ended up falling sound asleep.
Fu Hengyi spared a moment to look at the mother and son sleeping peacefully in the back seat, his eyes full of tenderness.
By the time Shen Qinglan woke up, they were almost home. She looked at Fu Hengyi, "Why didn’t you wake me?"
"I could keep going. Seeing you sleeping so soundly, I didn’t have the heart to wake you." Those few hours were nothing to him.
Anan had returned, and Old Sir Shen’s illness suddenly improved significantly. Struggling to sit up from the bed, he wanted to hold Anan. Shen Qinglan, seeing this, quickly brought Anan to the bed, and Anan took the initiative to hug Old Sir Shen, "Great-grandfather, I’m back."
"Good, good, it’s good that you’re back," Old Sir Shen managed between sobs, holding Anan and not wanting to let go. Anan let him, whispering comforting words into the old man’s ear. It wasn’t long before she had soothed him.
"Great-grandfather, I made you worry this time. From now on, Anan will be well-behaved, and you have to get well soon, okay?"
"Yes, seeing you back, great-grandfather is fine now," Old Sir Shen said tenderly.
Old Sir Fu had already arrived at the Shen Family home. Seeing this scene, his eyes slightly welled up. Old Sir Shen had aged considerably in just a few days, and his health had declined. A person who once looked robust now seemed like a faltering old man.
"Old Man Shen, look at you. Anan is back now, you should be happy."
Old Sir Shen paid no attention to his old friend and instead touched Anan’s little face, "Did you starve these days?"
Anan shook her head, "No, I met a very, very nice uncle. He was very good to me."
Old Sir Shen carefully inquired about Anan’s experiences over the past few days and felt grateful for the "very, very nice uncle" she mentioned, "Next time, great-grandfather will have to thank him properly."
Anan’s return was a joyous occasion that naturally called for celebration. In the past few days, due to Anan’s disappearance, Pei Yinong, Fang Tong, and Yu Xiaoxuan had also been helping with the search and were equally worried. So after Anan was found, Shen Qinglan personally called to notify each of them of the news.
"Major General Fu, Mrs. Fu, we are very sorry for our negligence that led to this incident. This is a small token of our apology, please accept it," said the kindergarten principal, who had personally come to offer an apology along with Teacher Xiao Xie.
Teacher Xiao Xie had swollen eyes with heavy shadows beneath them, clearly having had a tough time these past few days.
"This matter is in the past; let’s not bring it up again," Fu Hengyi said indifferently.
The principal’s eyes brightened at his words, but before he could rejoice, Fu Hengyi continued, "Tomorrow, I will come to complete the formalities for Anan’s transfer to another school."
The smile on the principal’s face froze, "This... Major General Fu, our kindergarten overlooked certain things, and I promise such an incident will not happen again. Please give us another chance."
The principal wanted to keep Anan at the school. Many parents were aware of the Fu and Shen Families’ public search for Anan. If Anan were to transfer now, it would reflect badly on their kindergarten, suggesting that the Fu Family did not trust them. The children attending the kindergarten were mostly from Military Region families—the children of high-ranking officials. If they were dissatisfied, his position as the principal would be untenable. However, this incident had already caused him considerable trouble.
Fu Hengyi’s expression remained indifferent, "Anan’s transfer is unrelated to this incident. There’s no need for the principal to worry about it."
If the principal believed him, he would be naive. If it were truly unrelated, Anan wouldn’t be transferring. In the dead of winter, the principal was sweating profusely. Wiping his forehead, he said, "Major General Fu, we truly are sorry for this incident. Whatever form of compensation you require is warranted, and we will try our utmost to satisfy it. However, regarding Anan’s transfer, I hope you will reconsider. After all, Anan is young, and adapting to a new environment takes time, which is not beneficial for a child’s development." The principal spoke for his own benefit, but his words came from the heart.
Children innately feel anxiety and fear towards unfamiliar environments. Frequent changes in the environment can be very harmful to a child’s mental and physical health.
"Teacher Xiao Xie." The principal gently nudged Teacher Xiao Xie, who then approached Fu Hengyi. She bowed her head, not daring to look at Fu Hengyi, his presence making her nervous, "Major General Fu, it’s my fault this time. I didn’t take good care of Anan. I will take responsibility for my actions, and I will resign tomorrow. However, the principal was right; Anan has already gotten familiar with the other children and adapted to the kindergarten. Transferring schools now would not be good for her, so I hope you will seriously consider the matter."
Teacher Xiao Xie didn’t want to leave; it had been hard for her to find this job. But with such an incident, someone had to be held accountable, and as Anan’s homeroom teacher who had failed to protect her, she was the first in line.
Before coming to the Fu Family, the kindergarten principal had a deep talk with her. If she was willing to take all the responsibility alone and proactively resign, then he could introduce her to other kindergartens; otherwise, she would be dismissed by the kindergarten.
"Teacher Xiao Xie, you don’t have to do this. This incident was an accident, and nobody wanted it to happen. You are very diligent and responsible in your daily work, and we, as parents, have all seen it. You’re a good teacher, and I think the principal doesn’t want to lose an effective assistant like you, do you, principal?" Shen Qinglan had listened to the whole conversation and naturally knew that Teacher Xiao Xie was being made a scapegoat, so she couldn’t help but speak up for her. She knew that Teacher Xiao Xie wasn’t from Beijing and that it was not easy to put down roots in the city.
Upon hearing this, the principal nodded repeatedly, "Yes, yes, yes. Teacher Xiao Xie is one of our best teachers. How could I bear to let her go? Besides, as the principal, if anyone should be responsible for this, it should be me."
As he spoke, he turned to Teacher Xiao Xie. "Teacher Xiao Xie, let’s not talk about resigning anymore. From now on, you should learn from this lesson and work even harder."
Teacher Xiao Xie hadn’t expected Shen Qinglan to speak up for her. She looked at Shen Qinglan gratefully. At the same time, she felt even more guilty. If she had been a little more careful that day, Anan wouldn’t have gone missing.
"Um, Major General Fu, Mrs. Fu, about Anan transferring schools, could you both reconsider? After all, our kindergarten is quite good in terms of teaching staff and curriculum," the principal said with a servile face, his heart tired from dealing with families of high-ranking officials.
Shen Qinglan subtly pinched Fu Hengyi’s hand. Fu Hengyi instantly understood her meaning, "We’ll consult with Anan about this issue before making a decision. However, Anan needs to rest at home for the next few days and won’t be going to school."
"Good, good, no problem. He really should rest well," said the principal with a smile. Although Fu Hengyi didn’t explicitly say Anan would continue to attend the kindergarten, his tone wasn’t as firm as before, suggesting there was still a possibility, and that was enough for the principal.
"On behalf of our kindergarten, I want to apologize to both of you again for the unpleasant experience," the principal bowed deeply to Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi, who stepped aside to avoid it.
"There’s no need for that," Fu Hengyi said.
The principal, a man who knew when to retreat, took his leave after achieving his purpose. Once he was gone, Shen Qinglan looked at Fu Hengyi, "Do you really plan to transfer Anan to another school?" Fu Hengyi had not discussed this matter with her.
Fu Hengyi nodded, "I want to find a better school for Anan."
"There’s actually no need." Since the kindergarten was attended by children of military officers, it was top-notch in Beijing in terms of teaching staff and other aspects. Even if they considered transferring schools, the options were limited. Moreover, after this incident, she believed the kindergarten would strengthen its security measures.
"And just as Teacher Xiao Xie said earlier, it will take time for Anan to adapt to a new environment." Although Shen Qinglan wasn’t worried about Anan’s ability to adapt, it was better to avoid it if possible.
Fu Hengyi might disregard the principal’s opinion, but he would certainly consider Shen Qinglan’s. Since she suggested it, Fu Hengyi naturally wouldn’t insist, "Then we won’t transfer schools for now."
Due to Anan’s disappearance, Fu Hengyi and Shen Qinglan had unintentionally dismantled an organization that specialized in child trafficking. This was the second time they had helped the police take down such an organization. The higher-ups were naturally pleased, with the First Lady even making a special call to the Fu Family to inquire about Anan’s wellbeing.
The leaders originally wanted to commend Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi, but they declined the praise, as their initial intent was merely to retrieve their child. However, if such an incident occurred again, Shen Qinglan would still make the same choice, as she found human traffickers utterly unforgivable.
After Anan returned, Shen Junyu removed the pictures of Anan from the internet that had circulated due to the urgency of the situation.
Despite this, many people had already seen Anan. If one visited Shen Qinglan’s Weibo, they would find that aside from comments expressing relief at Anan’s safe return, many more commented on how handsome Anan was.
When Shen Qinglan saw these comments, she smiled. Praises for her son made her happier than praises for herself. However, the happiest one was Anan, who didn’t have to go to school for a few days.
Haohao, knowing that his brother had been found, came to the Fu Family with his mother as soon as possible.
"Brother!" Anan was delighted to see Haohao and took his hand to go to his room. Haohao was even pulled away before he had a chance to greet Shen Qinglan and the others.
Shen Qinglan watched her son with amusement.
"Hengyi has returned?" Pei Yinong asked.
Qinglan nodded, "He’ll be back tonight." Hengyi had just gone to the base to deal with some urgent matters, and he wouldn’t be staying in the Military Region tonight. Moreover, the senior leaders had given Hengyi three days off to spend at home with his family due to the incidents that had occurred in the past few days.
"I’m also relieved now that I’ve seen Anan safe and sound," said Pei Yinong with a sigh of relief.
"Cousin, I’ve worried you these past few days."
"We sisters don’t need to be so formal with each other. If anything had happened to Haohao, you’d be worried too."
**
Time flew by, and in half a month’s time, it would be Pei Yinong and Jiang Chenxi’s wedding.
That day, Pei Yinong and Jiang Chenxi coincidentally encountered Chen Wanqiao and Zhong Lei, who were out dining at a restaurant.
"What a coincidence, meeting you guys again," Pei Yinong greeted Chen Wanqiao with initiative.
Chen Wanqiao also hadn’t expected to run into Jiang Chenxi and Pei Yinong here and responded with a smile, "Indeed, what a coincidence."
"Are you about to have dinner, or have you finished?" Pei Yinong inquired.
"We were just about to eat. Have you finished?"
"No, we haven’t eaten yet either. Since that’s the case, why don’t we eat together?" Pei Yinong offered the invitation. Chen Wanqiao looked at Zhong Lei, who nodded, "Sure, it’s more lively to eat with more people."
"How did you think to come here for dinner today? I remember Wanqiao, your workplace isn’t around here," Jiang Chenxi said.
"Zhong Lei works nearby. I came over to have lunch with him today. What about you?" Chen Wanqiao casually asked, purely to divert her own attention.
"That’s quite the coincidence; Yining works around here too," Jiang Chenxi said with a smile.
"It really is quite coincidental. Zhong Lei just switched jobs to work here three months ago," said Chen Wanqiao, her gaze remaining fixed on Pei Yinong, but she couldn’t resist stealing glances at Jiang Chenxi, who considerately served Pei Yinong some dishes.
A shadow of sadness flickered in Chen Wanqiao’s eyes, yearning for the tenderness she dreamed of but could never attain.
Suddenly, a bowl of soup appeared in front of her, and when she looked up, she met Zhong Lei’s tender gaze, "You haven’t had much of an appetite lately, have some soup first."
Chen Wanqiao smiled and nodded. In fact, she thought to herself, Zhong Lei was also very good.
"How are your wedding preparations going? Is everything ready?" Chen Wanqiao asked during the meal.
"It’s almost all prepared. Make sure you come when the time comes," Jiang Chenxi spoke up. He had been preparing for the wedding for a full six months, striving to make every detail perfect. All that was left was to wait for the wedding day to arrive.
"Of course," said Chen Wanqiao, being able to witness Jiang Chenxi’s happiness was a liberation for her. From now on, she could truly let go of Jiang Chenxi.
As the four left the restaurant, Jiang Chenxi turned to Chen Wanqiao, "Where are you heading now? I can drive you there."
Chen Wanqiao waved her hand, "No need, Zhong Lei’s company is nearby; we can walk, just consider it a post-meal stroll."
She came by car today, but parked at Zhong Lei’s company building’s parking lot.
"Alright then, we’ll be leaving first. We’ll get together another time."
Zhong Lei nodded with a smile.
However, as Jiang Chenxi and Pei Yinong were heading to the parking lot, they heard Chen Wanqiao’s shout from behind, "Pei Yinong, watch out."
Jiang Chenxi instinctively looked up and saw a car hurtling straight towards Pei Yinong. His body reacted faster than his mind, pushing Pei Yinong away. But before he could take his next step, a powerful force hit him, flinging him to the side. He fell to the ground as a subsequent crash sounded, and a figure flew past him, tumbling not far away in a parabolic arc.
The car that hit the person immediately fled the scene, and Jiang Chenxi only managed to catch a glimpse of a woman’s profile.
In the hospital corridor, Jiang Chenxi and Pei Yinong stood outside the operating room, staring intently at the doors, while Zhong Lei sat to one side, head lowered in silence, lost in thought.
This was clearly no accident; the car had targeted Pei Yinong. The only surprise was that Chen Wanqiao had unexpectedly rushed forward to push Jiang Chenxi aside.
Zhong Lei’s hands were still smeared with blood—Chen Wanqiao’s.
Jiang Chenxi handed him a pack of tissues. Zhong Lei looked up at Jiang Chenxi for a long time, then averted his gaze, but didn’t take the tissues, "No need, thank you!"
"Wanqiao will be alright; don’t worry," Jiang Chenxi comforted him.
Zhong Lei simply nodded without a word. Today’s event had been too much for him to handle; he needed time to process it.
When the light in the operating room turned off, the doctor emerged, and Pei Yinong immediately approached, "Doctor, how is my friend?"
The doctor looked around and then asked, "Who is the patient’s relative?"
Zhong Lei stood up, "I am, her fiancé. How is my fiancée?"
"The patient is out of danger now, but the accident caused severe trauma to her body. You need to be prepared," said the doctor, his eyes filled with sympathy.
Zhong Lei felt a sudden sinking feeling in his heart, "Doctor, what happened to my fiancée?"
The doctor sighed, "The car accident has done significant damage to your fiancée’s body, especially her uterus. Although we were able to save her uterus, the likelihood of her conceiving is almost zero."
Zhong Lei’s face turned pale, and Pei Yinong and Jiang Chenxi were shocked.
They all understood what the doctor’s words meant. Chen Wanqiao would never have the chance to become a mother in her lifetime. For a woman about to step into marriage, it was an incredibly cruel fate.
The doctor patted Zhong Lei on the shoulder, "We’ve done our best. Her injuries were too severe, and all we could do was save her uterus, beyond that there was nothing more we could do. When the patient wakes up, she will be very emotional, and you as family members need to be prepared to support her through this." In reality, they should have removed the uterus, but because removing a woman’s uterus has such a significant impact, they did their best to preserve it.
Zhong Lei nodded absent-mindedly; his mind was in turmoil.
Jiang Chenxi pursed her lips, wanting to say something but realizing that anything she might say would be inadequate. Words seemed especially pale at times like this.
It was Zhong Lei who spoke first, "Wan Jiao’s life is no longer in danger, and I will be here at the hospital. I will also notify her parents later, you all should leave for now." He didn’t want to see these two at the moment.
"Alright, please call us if there is anything we can assist with," Pei Yinong said as he pulled Jiang Chenxi, who wanted to speak, away. Now was not the time to discuss this; everyone needed to calm down and take time to process the event,
Chen Wan Jiao woke up a day later to find only Zhong Lei in the hospital room. Zhong Lei looked at her steadily, his eyes reflecting complex emotions.
Chen Wan Jiao, remembering what happened before she lost consciousness, also fell silent. Pushing Jiang Chenxi away during the accident was a reflex, without even a moment for thought. And was something that Chen Wan Jiao didn’t know how to explain to Zhong Lei. At the time, she didn’t know that because of the accident, she had lost the chance to become a mother.
"The doctors said you’re out of danger now. You just need some time to recover," Zhong Lei initiated the conversation.
Chen Wan Jiao looked at him, "Zhong Lei, I..."
"You don’t have to say it, I understand. The person you actually love is Jiang Chenxi, aren’t they? That’s why when the accident happened, you ran to save her first," Zhong Lei said, his expression remarkably calm.
Chen Wan Jiao’s face turned pale, "Zhong Lei, I’m sorry!"
"You don’t have to apologize to me. I’ve actually known for a long time that you have someone in your heart. But let’s not talk about this right now. You should rest. Your parents are in the doctor’s office and should be back soon." In the end, Zhong Lei didn’t have the heart to tell her about her loss, and he changed the subject.
Chen Wan Jiao stared resolutely at Zhong Lei for a long while and reached out to hold his hand, but Zhong Lei avoided it. Seeing this, a bitter taste emerged in her heart, accompanied by guilt and shame; she even felt like a wife caught cheating by her husband.
Her face very pale, Zhong Lei ultimately couldn’t bear to see her distressed and reached out to straighten the blanket over her, speaking softly, "You should rest now; I’ll stay here with you."
Upon hearing this, Chen Wan Jiao’s eyes welled up with tears. In fact, even if Zhong Lei scolded her now, it would be justified, as trying to save another man in front of her fiancé was something that would upset any man.
"Why are you crying? Don’t overthink it," Zhong Lei said as he gently wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, his voice tender.
"Zhong Lei, I..." Chen Wan Jiao’s voice choked up.
"Wan Jiao, you don’t need to say anything. We’ll talk about this matter after you’ve recovered. For now, just focus on getting better," he told her.
Chen Wan Jiao looked at him intently and then slowly nodded.
Zhong Lei left after Chen Wan Jiao’s parents arrived.
Mrs. Chen looked at her daughter, pale on the hospital bed, with a very complex expression. Beyond her distress, there was blame.
Mr. Chen, on the other hand, had a somber expression, "I’ll go home and make her some soup." he said as he stood up. He was holding back a lot of anger. He was truly afraid that if he stayed any longer, he’d say something unpleasant and hurt his daughter.
After Mr. Chen left, Mrs. Chen looked at her daughter and sighed deeply, "Why are you so foolish?"
"Mom, I..."
"Mom knows you once liked Jiang Chenxi, but didn’t you tell me that you had let go of him? What happened this time..." Mrs. Chen’s face was filled with worry.
"Mom, some things are beyond my control." She had genuinely been trying to let go of Jiang Chenxi, or she wouldn’t have dated Zhong Lei or even gotten engaged to him. But when things happened, her body was more honest than her heart.
"But do you know the consequences of what you’ve done?" Mrs. Chen said angrily.
"I’ll explain everything to Zhong Lei, and if he wants to call off the engagement, I can understand that."
"Now it’s not just about calling off the engagement, how are you going to manage afterwards?" Mrs. Chen was furious. If it had just been a normal car accident injury and she’d recovered, it would’ve been fine, but the result is that her uterus, although intact, will never be able to conceive again. In this situation, what man would want to marry her? What is she supposed to do with the rest of her life?
Chen Wanqiao sensed that something was wrong and looked at her mother, "Mom, are you hiding something from me?"
Mrs. Chen looked at her daughter, "No, don’t get carried away."
The more Mrs. Chen acted like this, the more Chen Wanqiao felt something was amiss, "Mom, just tell me the truth, what is there that I can’t endure now?"
Hearing this, Mrs. Chen burst into tears, "You foolish child." She could no longer continue to conceal Chen Wanqiao’s injury, as the truth couldn’t be hidden for much longer; she was bound to find out eventually.
Chen Wanqiao’s face turned even paler, her expression stunned.
"What are you going to do with Zhong Lei now?" Mrs. Chen was heartbroken for her daughter.
"Mom, if Zhong Lei wants to break off the engagement, don’t make it difficult for him," Chen Wanqiao said hoarsely. It was her fault to begin with, and she would understand whatever choice Zhong Lei made.
"Mom won’t blame Zhong Lei, but you ended up like this because of Jiang Chenxi. He must take responsibility for this," Mrs. Chen’s expression suddenly changed, saying abruptly. Since her daughter could no longer have children, Jiang Chenxi had to take responsibility for the rest of her life; otherwise, she would never let the Jiang family off the hook.
Chen Wanqiao’s eyes shifted slightly, "Mom, this has nothing to do with Jiang Chenxi."
"You’re still speaking for him, but you ended up like this while saving him, how can it not be his fault?" Mrs. Chen spoke bitterly. What she regretted the most was having let Chen Wanqiao go on a blind date with Jiang Chenxi from the start. If they had never met, her daughter wouldn’t have ended up like this.
Mrs. Chen stood up to leave; Chen Wanqiao grabbed her, "Mom, don’t go, please don’t go to find Chenxi, I beg you."
Mrs. Chen gave Chen Wanqiao a look full of disappointment, prying her hand off and leaving. She had to go to the Jiang family for an explanation.
"Mom." Chen Wanqiao struggled to stand up but aggravated her wound. Fortunately, the doctor happened to come in and saw this. Otherwise, Chen Wanqiao’s injury would have been exacerbated.
"What are you doing? Lie back down," the doctor scolded, "Don’t you know you’ve just had surgery? You’re being reckless; do you not care about your life?"
Chen Wanqiao looked towards the doorway, her expression anxious, but the doctor didn’t care about any of that and pushed her back onto the bed, "You need to rest properly now. Anything else can wait until you’ve recovered."
