The Villainess Winning Back Her Beast Husbands-Chapter 46: She Ran Away? What a Shame.
Rhys Finch came back to his senses and said nonchalantly, "Oh yes, we formed a Contract. I’d almost forgotten."
Evangeline gave a dry laugh and whispered, "Your female... kicked the bucket?"
When a female died, under the rules of the Beast God Contract, her Beast Husband would suffer an identical backlash. There were only two possible outcomes: either he would be critically injured and on the verge of death, or his life force would be severed completely. The latter was far more common.
Of her several Beast Husbands, with the exception of Danton, each one hated her more intensely than the last, their killing intent palpable.
’Heh. Talk about a disastrous start.’
"Kicked the bucket?" Rhys Finch didn’t understand the strange phrase, but combined with Evangeline’s tone, it wasn’t hard to guess its meaning.
He was stunned for a moment, then burst into delighted laughter. His laugh was wild and unrestrained, and his body even trembled slightly with it. After a long while, he praised her, "Flora, I like that phrase."
Evangeline quirked her lips. ’In a way, the original owner really did kick the bucket. Too bad I had to take over.’ 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
After a moment, Rhys Finch sat up a little straighter, his voice tinged with inquiry. "The Oasis Tribe. Have you heard of it?"
As he finished speaking, he "stared" straight at Evangeline, as if awaiting a crucial answer.
Evangeline glanced at him. ’So he finally couldn’t hold it in any longer?’
She feigned deep thought, furrowing her brow slightly. A moment later, a perfectly crafted look of utter astonishment appeared on her face. "The Oasis Tribe? You don’t mean the one that was brutally massacred a while back, wiped out completely? I don’t think there’s anyone in Norfell who hasn’t heard about it."
Rhys Finch went rigid, his body tensing abruptly. "What did you say? Massacred? Wiped out?"
"That’s right. And it’s all the fault of the Oasis Tribe leader’s daughter. She’s the number one Virago in Norfell!"
"You can’t even imagine how venomous that female’s heart is. It’s a rarity in this world!"
"She has several Beast Husbands, each one exceptionally talented and powerful, but she ruined them all, shattering their Star Patterns. Now they can never have offspring to carry on their bloodlines. Who could possibly swallow that insult?"
"So, her Beast Husbands got together, and burning with rage, they decided to get ruthless. They joined forces, led their men, and slaughtered the entire Oasis Tribe. Not a single person was left alive."
Evangeline told the story vividly, her tone indignant as if she personally despised The Virago. As she reached this point, she seemed to correct herself, adding, "Er, well, not *everyone*. One of them got away."
Rhys Finch stood frozen on the spot. He seemed to have never imagined that such a great tragedy had befallen the Oasis Tribe.
"One of them got away?" Rhys Finch snapped out of his long daze as if suddenly awakened.
After a long silence, he finally spoke in a low voice. His tone, once as gentle and lingering as a spring breeze, was now as if steeped in winter frost, laced with a bone-chilling coldness. "The Virago you speak of... is she Evangeline?"
When he said the name "Evangeline," he emphasized it with a strange, unsettling tone.
"You know Evangeline?" Evangeline blinked, asking curiously. Before Rhys Finch could answer, she continued, "That’s her! Who would’ve thought? So beautiful on the outside, but a heart more venomous than a Scorpion Beast’s!"
Rhys Finch’s voice was very soft, like a wisp of smoke. "She got away? What a pity."
’More venomous than a Scorpion Beast? Heh, that’s high praise. A female who could cruelly persecute a Beast Husband she grew up with... how could a Scorpion Beast be considered kind in comparison?’
Evangeline gave a weak smile and asked again, "Did you and Evangeline know each other before?"
Rhys Finch leaned back against the Bone Bed, his long fingertips tapping a light, rhythmic beat on it as if processing the shocking information he had just heard. After a moment, he uttered two flat words: "Don’t know her."
Evangeline let out a dry laugh. "If you don’t know her, how did you know The Virago I was talking about was Evangeline?"
"Fine, don’t tell me. I’m tired, move over." Evangeline gave Rhys Finch a shove, making a small space for herself, and curled up on the Bone Bed to sleep. The loss of her heart’s blood brought on a wave of drowsiness that was impossible to fight.
Rhys Finch ignored her. A long silence fell over the small house.
*
Six more days passed in silence, and at last, the final day of their agreement arrived.
Over these past few days, Evangeline and Rhys Finch had been "living and eating together," effectively becoming the "Female Leader" of the Wyndsong Tribe in everyone’s eyes. Evangeline didn’t deny the teasing remarks, and Rhys Finch offered no explanation.
That night, Evangeline went out and hunted a few "Sharpbeak Beasts," which were essentially wild pheasants.
The pheasants were half as tall as a person, with iridescent plumage that made them look like phoenixes in flight. It almost made her hesitate to kill them. But then she thought of beggar’s chicken, roasted chicken, scallion oil chicken, white cut chicken... and her hands moved without restraint.
Why catch chickens? Because foxes love chicken!
’I’ll be able to get Thorne’s Beast Crystal soon, and then I’ll have to leave Thorncliff. I just don’t know if Rhys Finch will be willing to come with me.’
’The Fallen Beastmen are pitiful, but if they all leave Thorncliff, it would cause widespread panic among the other Beastmen. I’m not that much of a saint. But Rhys Finch is different. He’s not just a mission objective; he truly became a Fallen Beastman because he was persecuted.’
Evangeline skillfully boiled water, plucked the feathers, and began to cook. Under the fire pit were the beggar’s chickens, marinated and sealed in clay. Sizzling over the fire was a roasted chicken, and in the pot, a fragrant scallion oil chicken was simmering.
Rhys Finch returned from outside, and smelling the rich, overpowering aroma, he asked, "What are you making?"
Their days together hadn’t been for nothing. At the very least, the possessive Rhys Finch’s attitude toward her had softened. He was no longer wary and distant, and they could even sit and chat idly. The distance between them had closed considerably.
"Roasted... Sharpbeak Beast." Evangeline looked up at him. "What were you up to today?"
Rhys Finch chuckled, his laugh full of meaning. Then, a handful of Beast Crystals was tossed onto the table.
Evangeline glanced at them and asked calmly, "Is the High Priest coming soon?"
Rhys Finch shrugged. He sat lopsided on the Bone Bed, his voice cool. "Probably."
Evangeline sat before the fire, resting her chin on her hand. The dancing flames illuminated her face.
’Perfect. I also want to see what kind of medicine this High Priest has. It concerns the matter of Rhys Finch’s future backlash, an urgent problem to be solved. After all, I’m a diligent worker.’
Just then, Rhys Finch tilted his head, a hint of languor in his posture. "Why did you make so much today?"
Evangeline usually didn’t have a large appetite; she only had herself to feed and rarely went to such trouble.
She turned to look at Rhys Finch, her enchanting voice like spreading ripples that captivated the heart. "Because this is the seventh day. Rhys Finch, congratulations. You’re about to be healed."
As she spoke, the room fell silent.
Rhys Finch’s movements abruptly froze.
He slowly raised his hand, the motion almost reverent, as his long fingers gently touched his gauze-wrapped face.
Every day, he could clearly feel the pain in his face lessening. The soothing improvement had blended so seamlessly into his daily life that he had almost forgotten it had already been seven days.
Evangeline’s eyes curved into crescents. "This is all for celebration!"
Rhys Finch straightened his back slightly and said solemnly, "When do we take it off?"
His breathing had unconsciously quickened, showing just how much he valued and longed for this moment.
"Right now!"
