Chapter 268: Chapter 268

[SAMANTHA’s Point of View]

We had no idea how Richard Bennette got out of the Pack Manor, but this time, Dominic and I wouldn’t gamble for their safety anymore.

Liam had finally convinced us to hire the halfings—the werewolf witches—to set up and cast protective spells throughout the twins’ room to shield them from the Black Claws and the Shadow Werewolves that had attempted to enter the Pack Manor multiple times.

We couldn’t rely on the guards anymore. It made me wish we had done it before, after I found out that Bennette had kidnapped the children when we thought they were just sleeping peacefully after we left the manor.

I swore to myself that it would never happen again. So Killian helped us pick the most skilled witches that he and Brianne knew could assist us. We hired six of them. And they all worked the whole day, making sure the barrier they made around Devon and Diana’s room was impenetrable, even with the use of the dark spells.

Beta Liam had been blaming himself for what happened and how Bennette got the kids. Dominic had talked to him about it—that it was never his fault. Liam did his best to protect the kids, and it was something that we never expected. No one was to blame.

All we could do was to make sure it would never happen again, and that’s our priority before Dominic and me leave the pack to go to the tomb of the Shadow Wolf King.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you? I don’t think it will be safe if it is just you and Dominic going there. At least you need backup.” Killian whispered to me as soon as the barrier was completed and the witches secured the place. “Let me help.”

“No. I need you to be here to protect the kids, Killian. You are strong enough to handle any Shadow Werewolf that might appear here again if ever Bennette tries to take the kids. "I need you to keep your eyes on Devon and Diana at all times." I pleaded as I sighed, then massaged the space between my eyes, feeling so anxious about the mission. “I don’t want to leave my twins, but there’s no other choice but to deal with this problem.”

“I understand. Trust that I will do everything possible to make sure Devon and Diana are safe. There are elite Gamma soldiers outside the room, and witches are making sure the barrier is powerful enough to keep the enemies from getting in.”

“Thank you, Killian,” I murmured. I gave him a faint and exhausted smile. I didn’t have enough time to get rest, but we had to keep going. “You are the only person whom I can trust with the kids.”

“I will do my best not to disappoint you, then,” he chuckled. There was sadness in his eyes. Longing that I couldn’t understand but made me nervous. I stared back into his green eyes, and I felt something strange. Something that I didn’t want to entertain, but it made me curious.

“Let’s go, Samantha.”

Dominic’s deep growl sent me back to reality, and I turned in his direction only to see that dark expression on his face. He looked annoyed. Pissed at how close Killian was to me, he then grabbed my hand as he glared at the MoonStone Alpha with threat in his eyes.

Kilian gave me a short nod and then smiled. He glared back at Dominic, though.

The Tomb of the Wolf King was in a place I never expected.

We had been to this place before. It was not too far from the Wolf Altar, where we all thought Richard Bennette died after a massive earthquake almost destroyed the place. Unfortunately, it seems he had made a huge sacrifice to deal with the death god and escaped from its grip.

That old traitor would never stop until he got what he wanted.

And I would do everything I could to make sure it never happened.

While we were in the corridor of the underground tomb, there was an awkward silence between Dominic and me. I felt that there was something he needed to say to me, yet I wondered what was stopping him from spilling it. He looked anxious, and I pretended that I didn’t notice it.

Until he couldn’t bottle his feelings anymore.

“Samantha...”

I turned to look at him and tried not to show any emotion until I saw those apologetic eyes and worry on his face. He said so softly I almost didn’t recognize his voice, “I have this feeling that I need to apologize for everything that happened before.” he was staring at the floor as he continued. “I know I already apologized for all of it, but I can feel that you haven’t completely forgiven me yet, and I understand. Everything I did wasn’t easy to forgive. Even I couldn’t forgive myself.”

When I didn’t say anything, that’s when he dared to look me in the eyes.

I got a little awkward. Was he not aware that Rey, the Queen’s guard, was not too far behind us? Was he not bothered that the old man might hear everything he was saying?

Or maybe he didn’t care if Rey heard it. He didn’t look like he was embarrassed about it, just to show that he was sincere in everything he was saying.

His hazel eyes turned warm honey gold under the dim light of the ceiling as he whispered the words. “I will spend my whole life making up for all the awful things I did just for you to forgive me.”

For a second, I was stunned at the passion I saw in his eyes as he stared at me. My feet just stopped making any single step. All of a sudden, I was under that spell, as I felt the warmth of longing for him in my chest.

I wanted to tell him how I felt. How I wanted to pull him and kiss him. However, I was jolted back to reality when Rey walked between us and pushed open the heavy door that I had not noticed was already in front of us.

“If you may excuse me,” Rey grinned as Dominic and I averted our eyes from each other awkwardly and then stepped inside the chamber first, taking the lead to test if there were traps or dangers inside.

I didn’t know what happened to me, but I took my husband’s hand. We entered the chamber together as I felt his fingers squeeze mine.

“What is it, Rey?”

Even Dominic froze when he saw the thing that was in the middle of the chamber. I knew right away that there was something wrong inside, but I couldn’t figure it out at first. The power, the aura inside, was confusing. Overwhelming.

Out of shock, both my husband and the Queen’s guard couldn’t utter a word. I didn’t know what they felt or what the thing was about, but beside the Moon Heart—the diamond that was displayed in the middle of the altar of the chamber, which was about the size of my palm—was a frozen corpse.

And when I saw its face, I understood why Dominic was so baffled to see it.

“No. That’s not my father. My father faked his death. I know he is still alive somewhere!” Dominic’s face was full of anguish as he flinched from what he witnessed.

“I heard that the late Alpha of the Silver Crescent pack volunteered to be frozen here to seal part of the Shadow Wolf King’s power. He is not dead, Alpha Dominic. He used his wolf spirit to prevent the awakening of the monster. The Moon Heart helps your father so he can be in a state of cryosleep.”

Hope suddenly lit Dominic’s eyes as he looked at me and then at Rey. I sensed a strange happiness in Dominic, which initially confused me because, as far as I know, he was never close to his dad. The old man was a ruthless ruler of the pack and very strict with Dominic during his training to become the next Alpha of the Silver Crescent.

But then I understood that no matter how cruel his father was to him, he was still Dominic’s father. I would feel the same if I knew there would be another chance for me to be with my father again.

As he realized something, Dominic’s brows deepened into a frown as he spoke to Rey. “Then that means if we take the Moon Heart, my father would never wake up again. Is that right?”

Unsure what to answer, Rey scratched his chin and remained silent, trying to figure out the possibilities.

“We can’t sacrifice anyone,” I said to Rey as I saw the disappointment on my husband’s face. “There should be another way.”

“Like what?” Rey squinted his eyes at me as if waiting for any suggestion.

“Like...” I muttered at first until an idea came into my head. “Like maybe we can combine the power of the Moon Heart with the purification abilities of Devon and Diana to deal with the Shadow Wolf King and save Dominic’s father.”

Rey’s face lightened, giving me the notion that my idea was good. But before he could even say a word, my phone started to keep on ringing, and I saw that Killian was calling urgently.

“Killian!? What is it?”

“Bennette! Bennette and his army of shadow werewolves attacked the pack again, and they are all heading to Pack Manor! I need you and Dominic here as fast as you can, Sam! The kids are in danger!”

All the blood in my face drained as I looked at my husband’s shocked eyes.

We didn’t waste any more seconds and rushed back to Silver Crescent. We had to ignore all the terrible things happening on our way because what my husband and I were concerned about were the kids! We had to get to Devon and Diana and protect them!

When Dominic kicked the door open, the old traitor was already there.

And his crooked hand was already reaching for my Devon...
