Chapter 306: Chapter 306

~Samantha~

I bit the insides of my jaw while nervously waiting for him to come back. I knew he would but I couldn’t stop imagining the worse case scenarios. This was my idea and he kicked against it so I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if anything happened to him.

But about a couple of minutes later, I heard a deep voice that sent an instant relief through me.

"Okay, coast is clear for now but I want everyone to stay close." Dominic’s voice echoed weird off the stone walls.

"No wandering about or bickering." He directed his last words to the twins and they giggled mischievously.

“Daddy is serious.” I warned them as we went into the passage.

"Just keep walking straight, don’t touch anything or look for too long." I tried to sound calm. "All of these nightmares will be over soon."

"How do you know that, Mom?" Devon asked.

I didn’t. But saying "I have no idea and we might be walking into a death trap" seemed counterproductive.

"Because these passages were built for quick escapes. They don’t make escape routes complicated." Lila answered from behind the twins. "Usually they lead directly outside the main structure."

"Usually?" Dominic caught the word immediately.

"Ninety percent of the time."

"And the other ten percent?"

"They lead to secondary vaults. Or collapse points designed to bury intruders."

"Fantastic." Dominic stopped walking. "Everyone halt."

We all froze. The sudden silence was worse than the echoing footsteps had been.

"What’s wrong now? Did you see something?" I moved closer to Dominic’s back.

"Not yet but we should have by now" His head tilted, listening. "How can the passage be so free of danger when the twins reported some outsiders being here? And to top it all, no traps? Stuff like this don’t make it easy."

"Maybe Silver Claw wanted their escape route accessible?"

"Or maybe someone else has been maintaining it." Dominic crouched down, running his hand along the floor. "These stones are clean. No dust. Someone’s been through here recently."

He was right. Now that he pointed it out, I could see the floor had been swept. The walls showed no cobwebs. This passage was being actively used.

"The footprints Devon and Diana mentioned." I thought back to what the twins had said. "They saw evidence someone had been through here."

"Going both directions." Dominic stood up. "Which means it’s not just an exit. It’s a thoroughfare."

"For who?" Killian had moved closer to the twins, his purple eyes reflecting our lights. "Who’s been using Silver Claw’s secret passages?"

"Black Moon. Has to be. They found the passage after the massacre. Have been using it to move in and out of the mine without triggering the main entrance wards."

"Then they know we’re here." I looked at Dominic. "They know we found the vault."

"Probably. But they don’t know how many of us there are or how armed we are." Dominic pulled out a silver dagger from his belt. "So we move fast and quiet. Minimize conversation. Signal if you hear anything suspicious."

"What kind of signal?" Devon asked.

"Two quick taps against the wall." Dominic demonstrated. "Everyone got it?"

We all nodded.

"Good. Stay close, I don’t want to lose anybody." Dominic started forward again.

“By that, you mean your family.” Killian coughed, an obvious rage bait.

“You have no issue surviving, same as Lila so yes.”

His eyes then turned to me and he grabbed my hand protectively.

"I won’t let you get hurt again. Not like before. Not ever."

The words made something in my chest squeeze uncomfortably. Was I touched by his words?

I should pull away. Should maintain independence. Should not let him pull me along like I needed protecting.

But his hand was warm and my nerves were shot and honestly, having someone else make decisions for the next five minutes sounded good.

So I squeezed back. Let him pull me forward.

"Are we getting close to Black Moon’s base?" I asked.

"I think we are and I sense incoming danger." The grip on my hand tightened even more. "Hold onto your weapons if you want to stay alive."

The twins pulled out their purification whistles. Lila drew a silver dagger from her belt. Killian’s hands flexed, claws extending partially.

I kept my right hand in Dominic’s. Used my left to let royal blood pool in my palm. Silver light glowed faint between my fingers.

The passage opened up ahead. Widening into something that looked like a chamber.

Dominic stopped at the threshold. Signaled us to halt.

"What is it?" I whispered.

"It’s suspiciously quiet." He sniffed the air. "But I smell wolves. They are somewhere close by."

"They better come because we are ready."

"Take your positions, this fight won’t be easy."

My stomach dropped. "They’re here already."

"Yeah. Question is whether they know we’re here."

The answer came in the form of arrows.

They shot from the darkness ahead. At least a dozen. Silver-tipped. Aimed at head height.

"DOWN!" Dominic yanked me to the ground hard enough to knock the air from my lungs.

Arrows whistled overhead. Embedded in the wall behind us with solid thunks.

"AMBUSH!" Lila shoved the twins flat.

Figures poured from the chamber ahead. Ten. Fifteen. Twenty. All wearing black. Black Moon’s men.

"PROTECT THE TWINS!" Dominic roared.

He shifted. Fully. His massive wolf form filled the narrow passage, fur bristling, teeth bared.

The first attacker reached us. Dominic’s jaws closed around his throat before the man could swing his weapon.

Blood sprayed. The man dropped.

More rushed forward.

I scrambled backward, pulling the twins with me. "Diana! Devon! Whistles NOW!"

They brought the whistles to their lips. Blew.

The silent sound rippled outward. I felt it pass through me. Felt the purification energy spread.

Two attackers stumbled. The shadow corruption in their systems reacted badly. They fell to their knees, coughing up black blood.

But the others kept coming.

Killian moved past me. Intercepted three attackers at once. His curse-enhanced strength made him faster than he should be. Stronger. He grabbed one man by the throat, lifted him off the ground, slammed him into the wall hard enough to crack stone.

"Behind you!" I screamed.
