Chapter 262: Born in Blood

"Patient is Genesis Blackwood, age 24. Forty weeks pregnant. Penetrating stab wound to left shoulder. Facial trauma. Possible blood loss. Water broke on scene. Fetal status unknown."

The stretcher flew through the emergency doors.

"BP dropping!" "Get OB and trauma team now!" "Prep OR for emergency C-section!" "Type and crossmatch blood!"

Genesis’s head rolled weakly to the side. An oxygen mask was placed over her face.

"Genesis, can you hear me? Stay with us."

No response.

Kieran tried to follow but a nurse blocked him.

"You can’t go past this point, sir."

"She’s my wife!" he roared.

"They’re taking her to surgery. We’ll update you."

Behind them, another stretcher rushed past.

"Male, multiple facial fractures, severe blood loss, possible skull trauma. Barely responsive."

Jimmy.

Amelia’s eyes flickered to that stretcher.

At least he’s alive... she thought shakily. If he died, Kieran could be charged.

The hours felt like years.

Kieran paced barefoot in the hospital hallway. His chest still covered in dried blood. His knuckles torn open. His back wound stitched quickly in the ER but still bandaged.

He looked like a man dragged out of war.

No one approached him.

Rev arrived first. Then Jaden. Rosie. Veronica. Donald. Eliana who was already crying on her way in.

They all stayed back.

No one spoke to Kieran.

He looked... empty.

Like if someone touched him, he would either shatter... or explode.

Amelia stood near him, arms wrapped around herself.

Finally...

The surgery doors opened.

The doctor walked out, pulling down his mask.

Everyone froze.

Then he smiled.

"They made it."

A breath left every chest at once.

Kieran stepped forward.

"My wife?"

The doctor nodded.

"The babies are healthy. They needed oxygen but they’re breathing on their own now."

Kieran repeated.

"And Genesis?"

"She’s stable. We controlled the bleeding. She lost a lot of blood, so she’s receiving transfusions. She’s still under anesthesia and will be in recovery for a few hours. She’ll be weak when she wakes up. But she’s going to be okay."

Kieran closed his eyes.

His knees almost gave out.

"She can’t move much because of the shoulder injury. And she’ll be in pain from the surgery. But she’s alive. And your children are alive."

For the first time since he walked into that house...

Kieran broke down.

Not rage.

Not violence.

Just relief.

Tears fell silently down his face as he covered his mouth with his shaking hand.

"She asked for you before she went under," the doctor added softly. "Even unconscious... she was fighting."

Kieran didn’t make a sound when he broke.

No loud sob.

No dramatic fall.

Just one sharp inhale... like his lungs had forgotten how to work.

Then his shoulders shook.

Rev was the first to move. She stepped forward slowly, like approaching a wounded animal. She didn’t say anything. She just pulled Kieran into a tight hug.

For a second, Kieran stayed stiff.

Then he folded.

His forehead dropped against Rev’s shoulder.

"I thought..." his voice was soft. "I thought I lost her."

Rosie started crying harder. Veronica rushed forward and hugged him too. Eliana wrapped her arms around Amelia.

Jaden clapped a hand on Kieran’s back.

No one teased him.

No one looked away.

They had never seen him like this.

The cold, unreadable man... crying like a boy who almost lost everything.

"They’re alive," Rev said quietly. "All three of them."

Kieran nodded, but tears kept falling.

He didn’t care who saw.

The Next Day

Morning light slipped through the hospital blinds.

The room was quiet except for the steady beep of a monitor.

Genesis felt heavy.

Her body ached everywhere. Her shoulder burned. Her stomach felt tight and sore.

She blinked slowly.

White ceiling.

Hospital.

Memory rushed back in pieces.

Knife.

Jimmy.

Kieran.

Her hand moved weakly to her stomach.

Flat.

Her breath caught.

Her eyes snapped open fully.

"Kieran..." her voice came out dry and small.

He was there instantly.

He had not left.

He was sitting in the chair beside her bed, elbows on his knees, head lowered. He hadn’t slept. Same pants from yesterday. Same bandage on his back. His knuckles wrapped in gauze.

The second she spoke, he stood.

"Genesis."

He moved to her side carefully, like she might disappear.

Her eyes searched his face.

"The babies..." she whispered, panic rising. "Where are they? Why is my stomach..."

"They’re alive," he said quickly, voice shaking despite himself. "They’re okay. Both of them."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

Her breathing became uneven.

"I couldn’t... I couldn’t feel them..."

"You had surgery," he said gently. "Emergency C-section. You were losing too much blood. They had to take them out fast."

Her hand tightened weakly around his.

"Are they hurt?"

"No." His jaw trembled. "They needed oxygen for a few minutes. They’re in the NICU for observation. But they’re strong. Just like you."

Tears slid down her temples into her hair.

"I want to see them."

"You will," he promised immediately. "The doctor said once you’re more awake and your vitals stay stable, they’ll bring them in."

She swallowed.

"Jimmy?"

The room went still.

Kieran’s eyes darkened for a split second.

"He’s alive," he said flatly. "In surgery. Under police guard."

Her fingers tightened again.

"You didn’t kill him? So you’re not... in trouble?"

"No."

She studied his face, relief filling her. Then she noticed the dried tear tracks on his cheeks. The exhaustion. The fear still hiding behind his calm.

"You cried," she whispered.

He didn’t answer.

Her lips trembled softly.

"You were scared."

He leaned down, pressing his forehead gently against hers, careful of her bruises.

"I thought you died in my arms."

Silence.

Then very softly...

"I can survive anything," she whispered. "But not leaving you."

His breath broke again.

He kissed her carefully. Soft. Shaking.

A nurse knocked lightly and entered.

"Good morning. Look who’s awake."

Genesis blinked at her.

"Can I see my babies?"

The nurse smiled.

"I think that can be arranged."

Minutes later...

Two tiny bassinets were rolled into the room.

Wrapped in hospital blankets. Small pink and blue hats.

Genesis started crying before they were even placed near her.

Kieran stood frozen.

The nurse gently lifted one baby at a time and placed them carefully against Genesis’s arms, propped with pillows because of her shoulder.

"They’re beautiful," the nurse said softly.

Genesis looked down.

So small.

So perfect.

"They’re okay?" she asked again.

"Perfect Apgar scores now," the nurse reassured. "Strong heartbeats. Healthy lungs."

Kieran finally stepped closer.

He looked down at them like he was looking at something holy.

One of the babies made a small sound.

His entire face changed.

Soft.

Overwhelmed.

Terrified.

In love.

Genesis looked up at him through tears.

"You’re a father."

He swallowed hard.

"Yes I am," he whispered.
