Chapter 534.3: Schemes... Schemes Everywhere!

He didn’t want his company’s debt ratio getting too high. Borrowing from the New Alliance Central Bank wasn’t free, after all.

Still, the two million silver coins couldn’t go through official accounts. He had to pull from his own savings. He couldn’t even borrow it from the bank. That stung.

Silver coins had way more purchasing power than chips!

Seeing the nod, Fred’s face lit up with joy. He immediately threw an arm around Sun Shiqi’s shoulders.

"Thank you for understanding! I’m sure we’ll have plenty more deals in the future... How about dinner tonight? I heard the New Alliance nightlife is just beer and fireworks."

"We don’t shoot fireworks every night. And it’s not just beer," Sun Shiqi instinctively countered.

He had long since considered himself one of the New Alliance’s own, he wouldn’t let anyone talk down his people.

"I know, but I bet you don’t have this," Fred chuckled, giving him a knowing look every man understood. "At the Queen of the Night, most people can only watch from the floor. But with enough chips, you can invite a dancer to your private booth for a solo show. I’ve got a black card. It gets you into VIP rooms even the rich can’t enter. You’ll love it."

Sun Shiqi immediately got what he meant and chuckled in embarrassment. "Just a performance, huh?"

Seeing his interest, Fred laughed heartily. "Of course! And there’s more than one kind of show! You’re a boss of the New Alliance, those girls will love you! Tip them in silver coins, and they’ll fall head over heels!" 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Sun Shiqi quipped back, "I thought they’d call me a bumpkin..."

Fred waved it off. "That’s old news. Here, if you’ve got chips, nothing’s out of reach."

Sun Shiqi was about to say no, but his legs had already decided.

He admitted it, he was no idealistic shelter resident. He was a vulgar man. That was probably why he would never become a member of a shelter, and why that reserved girl never opened her heart to him.

If only the New Alliance were a bit freer.

It would be best if it were like Boulder Town, where one could do anything they wanted as long as they had chips.

But he doubted Shelter 404 would allow that. Well, their administrator certainly wouldn’t let it happen.

After all, that man had once laid down his command. “The silver coins of our New Alliance can buy any product, but no currency will ever buy honor or dignity.”

Still... That wasn’t such a bad thing.

Even the most playful soul didn’t like bringing filth back home. The wasteland was vast. It was easy to find a ditch to take a dump in.

Looking at Fred’s eager, fawning smile, Sun Shiqi couldn’t help but curl his lips in amusement.

Since the old man was being so generous... He might as well gorge himself on the fat flesh of this sinking whale while it lasted.

...

The Mighty Steelworks wasn’t the only one on sale. The New Alliance’s first batch of chip-denominated bonds alone totaled 3,000,000,000, and they quickly opened a sales channel through Boulder Town Bank.

The froth squeezed out by financial tools surged into the factories of Boulder Town’s industrialists like a collapsing flood.

It was a tidal wave more terrifying than a real one.

Top-grade productive assets were suddenly tagged as toxic. Things that were once highly sought after became untouchable, because something sweeter had been placed in front of everyone, and the bitterness to follow was much harder to detect.

At the grand feast in the name of prosperity, some wept bitterly, while others laughed manically.

Sid was, without a doubt, the latter. He was arguably the biggest winner of the game, having cashed out his chips and exited early. Naturally, he had the brightest smile.

But when he saw the price of bonds rising in the secondary market, that smile gradually faded from his face.

Staring at the palm-sized trading terminal, Sid gnawed his thumbnail and suddenly cursed. "Tsk... That damned dog Vega got a bargain!"

Seeing her husband’s scowl, Bonnie sat beside him and asked in concern, "What’s wrong, darling... Did something happen?"

"It’s nothing, sweetheart," Sid smiled gently, returning to his usual elegance. "It’s just a little thing... The bonds I sold to Vega went up a bit. By my count, he owes me another 20 million."

Though she had no real concept of money, Bonnie couldn’t help but scold him. "You... You should let Vega make a little profit. Otherwise, why would he work so hard to make money for our family? Don’t go asking him for that money, it’s not proper to beg."

"You’re right, darling... I was being greedy." Sid’s eyes twitched. On second thought, she had a point.

He had almost forgotten the family motto.

A greedy hyena would choke on bones. Only win-win deals could last. When the master finished the meat, he had to toss the dog a bone.

Vega was an old dog. Letting him earn a bit was only fair.

But looking at the fluctuating chart, Sid couldn’t help but feel the itch to buy a little back... Anyone with a brain could see that the trend was rising.

As long as the interest rate wasn’t equal to the bond’s yield, there was still room for arbitrage.

Bonnie went to dress up. That afternoon, she was meeting her sisters at an inner-city boutique spa. Sid had no interest in that sort of thing, and kept his eyes glued to the tiny screen.

It was getting more frustrating to look at, but he couldn’t help but be curious, just how high would those bonds go?

Just then, his youngest son Kumiter returned home. One glance at the trading device in Sid’s hand, and he scoffed. "That’s so lame."

Sid shot the brat a glare. "You don’t know shit, punk!"

Kumiter grinned and plopped down next to his old man, eager to show off the little knowledge he had.

"I’ve heard my buddy Kishur talk about bonds before. They’re nothing special. They are 10 year bonds with a face value of 100 chips. Even if the price shoots through the roof, it tops out at 140, right? No way they’re worth more than 10 years’ worth of interest and principal combined."

Disregarding any premium from tax-shielding advantages, his logic was perfectly sound.

Sid looked at his son with surprise. "Hey... Not bad, kid. Kishur told you this?!"

So... 140 chips was the ceiling.

With the mystery solved, he immediately lost interest in the trading device.

Kumiter puffed his chest with pride. "Of course! I told you, my buddy actually learned something. He came back this time planning to start something big!"

Kishur had painted a grand vision for him, issuing S coins was merely a step to fund that blueprint, and the end result would bring it all to life. Boulder Town would enter an era of even greater prosperity.

Sid gave a dismissive chuckle and sneered.

He had heard from Malvern that he had given his son a good thrashing, just because Kishur came back without notice and started spewing nonsense.

Ideal City was a nice vacation spot, sure. But turning Boulder Town into that? He had never even considered it for a second.

"A big plan, huh? Just how big?"

Kumiter answered proudly. "He wants to build another outer city outside the existing outer city!"

"Pfft hahaha!" Sid laughed until he was in tears. He kept teasing, "And then what? What’s the point?"

"Then we’ll issue a new currency in the outer city! A currency everyone can benefit from, just like Ideal City! It’s something like CR. To make it work, he built an algorithmic framework using Ideal City technology and made smart contracts and digital certificates. This currency’s inflation is fully controllable. No more messy copper inflations or deflations!" Kumiter declared smugly.

Sid rolled his eyes in disdain.

A new currency?

What a joke.
