Chapter 57: Chapter 057: Encountering an Old Friend in a Foreign Place

Chen Ke was on a plateau that also had a path leading downwards, albeit significantly narrower than the one overhead—so much so that it wasn’t actually a path. One had to sidle along, pressing against the wall with great care to barely squeeze through.

Holding a sword made it even more inconvenient as he could only use one hand to cling to the mountain’s face. Fortunately, this time he wasn’t harassed by a pack of wolves, so he managed to reach the end of the narrow path where he found a cave big enough for an adult to crawl through.

Taking advantage of the daylight, Chen Ke peered into the pitch-dark cavern. After igniting the Fire-igniting Broadsword and throwing it into the cave like a torch, the illumination revealed a whole other world within—a labyrinth of stone pathways.

Feeling no danger, he tossed the sword inside first, then crawled in himself, using his hands and feet. He picked up the burning broadsword and carefully began to explore the stone paths.

The flame on the broadsword’s blade didn’t crackle like a torch would, as it wasn’t actually burning anything; the flame was simply a manifestation of expelled energy. Since using Holy Relics in this place did not consume one’s lifespan, he could afford to be liberal with it.

The Teleportation Gate’s cooldown was still two and a half hours away. But at that moment, he was indecisive.

...

That was because Chen Ke was unclear about where the Teleportation Gate would lead once it opened.

The first time he used it, he was standing outside the Black Box Space; that time the gate opened passively. Logically, if he were inside the Black Box Space and opened a gate, he should be able to go outside.

But after meeting the contract demon, Chen Ke had somehow managed to open another gate to this place before the Teleportation Gate’s cooldown had expired. This was the most baffling occurrence to him.

What exactly was this location? And if Chen Ke opened a Teleportation Gate here, where would it take him?

And, why was that contract demon able to create a gate from within him and emerge from his body?

Now, Chen Ke had grown wary of the Life Transfer Gate; after all, he couldn’t predict what was on the other side. Moreover, perhaps the demon was able to find him because of the Teleportation Gate; he certainly didn’t want to open a gate only to find that demon standing on the other side.

He decided to find a relatively safe place to rest first, and then quietly wait for the Teleportation Gate’s cooldown to end before considering how to return.

“Once I get back, I must find Pihom and get clear on what exactly the six categories and eighteen attributes are…” Chen Ke mused silently.

Illuminated by the sword’s fire, Chen Ke followed the stone path to a more open area—an inner valley within the mountain cliff. A crevice split open above, allowing daylight to spill into the valley, draping a layer of white frost on the winding mountain road.

Supporting himself on the icy stone wall as he descended, the sand and gravel beneath his feet felt fine and slippery. Bending down, Chen Ke saw his footwear covered in white dust.

He extinguished the sword’s flame and continued into the depths of the valley. Wherever he went, the white dust beneath his feet rustled eerily.

Chen Ke stopped to listen quietly and observed closely. The white dust was slowly spreading along the stone walls toward him.

There was no wind, yet the white dust swirled around on the ground by itself before coalescing into larger forms.

“+50 minutes”

“+50 minutes”

“+50 minutes”

“+50 minutes”

Chen Ke’s brows furrowed as he felt a wave of killing intent wash over him from behind. He dodged to the left, and the spot where he’d been standing resounded with the clash of steel and stone.

Turning back, he saw a man in tattered soldier’s chainmail, wielding a rusty sword, making his way toward him. The man’s armor was corroded and falling apart but still offered some measure of protection.

No, calling him a man wasn’t quite accurate. Precisely speaking, it was more like an armored corpse—although the figure wore a helmet, his head lolled as if unable to bear the weight of the iron helmet, and his entire face resembled a skull with skin stretched over it.

The figure’s missing left hand was slowly forming from the white dust on the ground…

Chen Ke heard more rustling and turned his head to see that the white dust on the ground had all gathered into undead soldiers.

[Administration Bureau Monster Rating: ??]

[Resurrection]

[Flame Immunity]

“Power Enhancement”

==================

“Light Energy Weakening”

“Ice Weakening”

Chen Ke frowned; both weapons in his hands were of the Flame attribute, which were completely countered by this monster. And they could even resurrect? What were these monsters made of? A jumble of random attributes!

Thankfully, their movements were extremely sluggish, presenting themselves as brainless, Chen Ke drew his PPQ .45 with his left hand and tentatively fired a shot at the closest zombie soldier.

Even well-made Medieval chainmail couldn’t withstand the impact of a .45 ACP bullet, much less the rotten chainmail that the zombie soldiers were wearing, which had holes all over it. The bullet easily penetrated the body of the zombie soldier, who let out a pained cry and was knocked down by the powerful recoil.

The Flame attribute of the bullet began to take effect within the body of the zombie soldier, as it unleashed the power of flame.

Of course, as creatures immune to flame, the zombie soldiers were different from the monsters Chen Ke had faced in Opportunity City. The bullet didn’t burn it to death but instead caused sparks of fire to seep from its body from the inside out.

The zombie soldier opened its mouth slightly, revealing a faint glow of fire, and a fireball rose from its dark, hollow eye sockets, resembling pupils. It suddenly let out a strange scream at Chen Ke, which seemed to serve as a threat. The sparks on its body grew brighter, dancing around it and casting an orange halo of light, giving it an invigorated appearance.

Although he didn’t know what this meant, Chen Ke guessed that his Flame attribute attack must have given the monster a BUFF…

No good, he couldn’t use these weapons against them. It was simply counterproductive.

Behind Chen Ke, five or six zombie soldiers were gathering and running toward him, wielding spears, axes, and short swords. If not for their twisted movements and ghostly howls, they might even pass for living people at first glance.

“Hey, close your eyes!”

A human shout came from the distance.

Chen Ke instinctively closed his eyes, only to hear a loud explosion resembling a grenade beside him, reminiscent of the ones Morgan had tossed in the hallway.

A scent similar to that of disinfectant immediately filled the air. Before he could open his eyes, he felt his right hand being grabbed by someone, pulling him to run incessantly in a certain direction.

Chen Ke opened his eyes and saw a familiar back.

Parker?!

“You…” Chen Ke watched incredulously at the person in front of him. Brown short hair, roughly 180 centimeters tall, dressed in a blue jacket and brown trousers…

And more importantly, he was holding a steel-grey pistol, that same Spiritual Energy M1911A1…

Chen Ke looked down at the M1911A1 in his own holster, wondering if he was mistaken about something.

If that’s my gun in his hand, then where did mine come from?

Chen Ke was utterly confused. He could feel the warmth of Parker’s hand on his and even saw the sweat stains on the blue shirt on Parker’s back. The Parker in front of him was indeed a living person.

This world is really f*cking crazy…

Looking back, after the grenade exploded, it seemed as though the zombie soldiers were greatly agitated and convulsed ceaselessly on the spot.

The two ran for a few minutes, with Parker expertly leading Chen Ke through the maze-like paths at the bottom of the valley until they arrived at a small, open space surrounded by three broken stone walls.

Parker watched behind for a long while by the wall until he finally confirmed they were safe, and then sat down on a large stone to catch his breath.

Chen Ke didn’t feel tired and sat down across from Parker on a fallen stone column, leaning his sword to one side.

He observed Parker, skin, hair, demeanor, and clothes… nothing seemed out of the ordinary, and he wasn’t a monster, otherwise many attributes would have appeared around Parker by now.

“Where did you go? I’ve been looking for you the whole time.” Parker lifted his head and asked.

“You looking for me? Parker… If you really are Parker… Do you remember that you’re already dead?” Chen Ke cautiously responded.
