Chapter 66: Chapter 066: Perhaps, I could from behind…

Of course, what exactly had happened to this world was a mystery far more elusive than his own life countdown. Whether he could piece together a full blueprint from bits and pieces of information was entirely up to fate.

But at least, the additional information on these pieces of equipment could tell Chen Ke what kind of monsters or enemies he was about to face, and give him a heads-up about some of the hidden dangers.

For example, the Black Ring Candlestick mentioned the Dark Plague and the Black Ring Sect.

At some point, the kingdom had suffered a plague similar to the Black Death that even spread to the royal family, with the old King Fan Hede himself contracting the disease.

Chen Ke had no idea what symptoms the disease caused, but he dared not assume that the disease had disappeared in the Great Void, so he had to be very careful in his exploration to avoid touching something he shouldn’t and contracting this strange illness.

Next was the Black Ring Sect. Although it seemed to be a church that played a medical role in the fight against the Dark Plague, to Chen Ke, who had experience with both Eastern and Western medicine, the idea of Magic Healing sounded very evil.

...

So far, Chen Ke had only seen undead soldiers. If he encountered undead priests later, who knows what kind of strange Magic they might cast. And now, Chen Ke had no protection against Magic, so he had to be extremely cautious.

This led to a very big mystery. Did the Dark Plague cause the downfall of this kingdom? It didn’t seem likely. All the undead were in a state of ashes, more like they had been burned into cinders.

If the Dark Plague really was a disease that reduced people to ashes, Chen Ke naturally had no objections, but he didn’t think it would be that simple.

What exactly had happened at the moment when the kingdom fell into the time loop? Thinking about what the disheartened guy said, that leaving required reliving the whole cycle, did it mean that he had to re-experience all the events that had once happened here?

Chen Ke held a Van Hede straight sword in each hand, pondering as he carefully explored along the stone pathway.

In the room adjacent to where he found the Van Hede straight sword, another similarly sized room full of water barrels, Chen Ke found nothing of value. These two small rooms were probably used specifically for storing water.

It made sense. For a church built against a mountainside, securing a water source was extremely important. Chen Ke peered out through an arched window, figuring that there were about ten or more stories of height between the church and the kingdom below. It was hard to imagine how people of that era managed to carve out such architecture on the mountainside.

Perhaps Magic was used.

At the end of the stone corridor, there was a very large pair of wooden doors with ornate carvings on them. The carvings of a woman entwined by many young snakes were identical to the lamps featuring a blindfolded goddess in the church’s main hall.

Which sacred goddess did this country worship? Regrettably, even with Giles’s knowledge, it seemed that Chen Ke couldn’t read all the information as if flipping through a book, which would have been much more convenient for obtaining useful intelligence.

On these carvings, Chen Ke found some abnormalities, some circular irregular holes that looked like… bullet holes?

Chen Ke frowned and turned to look at the floor, where he noticed some brass-colored casings that had rolled to the corner of the wall. Judging by their length, they were probably 5.56mm rifle rounds.

Chen Ke wasn’t sure if the sci-fi-looking gun owned by that disheartened guy also fired 5.56mm bullets. Maybe they were fired by weapons carried by Si’s consortium squad.

Regardless, these bullet holes and casings indicated that they had encountered something here and engaged in battle.

Chen Ke couldn’t discern the attribute of the Spiritual Bullets from the casings, but judging by the number of them, this enemy wasn’t too weak but wasn’t particularly strong either, probably just a so-so adversary.

Without finding any Monster Corpses, had they been reset by time? At this moment, Chen Ke suddenly heard heavy footsteps coming from behind the door, sounding as if the person wore iron-made shoes.

The sound got closer and closer, and Chen Ke quickly retreated, waiting until the door pushed open. A Knight clad in full silver armor, wielding a kite shield and a straight sword, entered the corridor.

He wore a full-coverage helmet with red tassels on top, and his blue cloak had been burned away in parts, leaving large scorched patches on the armor.

“Buddy, I’m just passing through,” Chen Ke said, his muscles tensed up, more nervous than he had ever been before.

“+1 hour”

“+1 hour”

“+1 hour”

“+1 hour”

“+1 hour”

“Life limit reached…”

The knight had no idea what he was saying, and almost the instant he saw Chen Ke, he assumed a battle stance, raised his shield, rested the sword on the side of the shield, and inched toward Chen Ke bit by bit.

The attributes were not much different from those of the Ashen Soldiers, with the addition of a Tough Body. The threat level was one hour, about the same as the black dog Chen Ke had encountered in the West Gold Building, but because this one was humanoid, the oppressive feeling wasn’t as strong. Probably because its equipment was better, thus the larger threat level.

Chen Ke had no experience fighting with Medieval soldiers and only learned about European Medieval swordsmanship in a literal sense from promotional videos of HEMA teachings taught by some modern groups.

However, that level of understanding could not be directly applied to the current situation; after all, this was the Great Void, filled with all sorts of strange magic.

What he was facing now was not some six dan or eighth dan master of the way of the sword or muscular sword instructor from a martial arts school. He was up against a knight who was trained by the legendary swordsman king, whose profession was killing, equipped with a full set of gear.

Chen Ke was freaking out but still struck a dual-wielding stance that he remembered from an animated show he had watched. Although he really wanted to use a gun against the knight, ordinary bullets were utterly pointless, and Flame Bullets were completely countered. Chen Ke resolved that once he got out of here, he must get his hands on as many types of Spiritual Bullets as possible.

Even though he hadn’t studied swordsmanship, Chen Ke didn’t think he was completely without a chance.

The corridor was wide enough for three people to walk side by side, and with the knight’s full-coverage helmet, his field of vision was limited. Plus, because he was clad in thick knightly armor, he should be less agile than Chen Ke.

The weak points of Medieval armor should logically be the various joints, and of course, if Chen Ke had a weapon like a war hammer, it would be even better as he could just smash them, but if he only had a sword, the armpit was a good spot for stabbing.

No matter how formidable the knight was, it was just an undead corpse lost of intelligence, likely fighting based on its former muscle memory and instinct without the enhancement of past experience, obviously diminishing its threat level.

Of course, these were all just Chen Ke’s speculations, and if there was a living person inside that knight’s armor, Chen Ke had a backup strategy – if he couldn’t beat him, he could run! Run back to the Church, and if the knight dared to follow him all the way, he didn’t believe that the downcast guy wouldn’t take action.

Chen Ke was contemplating whether to feint an attack to probe, hoping he might find an opportunity.
