This Young Master is not Cannon Fodder-Chapter 701: Brahmastra
Gu Longyu stood still within the influence of the interplanetary teleportation arrays. While the interplanetary teleportation array could transport people and items across outer space, it often required a willing target. If the target resisted, the controller of the array would have to exert far more effort, and even then, there would be a high chance of failure.
This was the reason Empress Wintersnow didn’t teleport in front of Yinian and take him away. It wasn’t just Yinian; the other enemies of the Death Defier Alliance would not be so easily kidnapped. Well, she could, but those that could successfully be taken away would be far weaker than herself, making it pointless.
At this stage of the war, the Temple of Death had long realized that the Death Defier Alliance possessed old-style interplanetary teleportation arrays. Similarly, they deployed their own, making the Death Defier Alliance’s efforts to eliminate the Interplanetary Teleportation Array Outposts almost useless. It wasn’t completely useless, as the advantage it brought in the early days of the war was substantial and caused quite a bit of loss to the Temple of Death.
Although the use of interplanetary teleportation arrays became more open and ubiquitous, no one had attempted such an act until now. And they chose Yinian out of all the targets.
Those who majored in the Law of Space were already rare, and those who majored in the Law of Time numbered a tenth of that. Yinian was even rarer. He mastered both the Law of Time and the Law of Space. Forcibly using interplanetary teleportation arrays on him would be even more difficult.
Not to mention that using three interplanetary teleportation arrays was an enormous risk. The Death Defier Alliance wasn’t the Temple of Death, and they could not create more arrays. All their interplanetary teleportation arrays came as a result of their spoils of victory. Losing an interplanetary teleportation array only represented a loss of wealth for the Temple of Death, but it was completely different for the Death Defier Alliance. Even the loss of a single one represented a huge downgrade in their possible war strategies.
However, Gu Longyu did not panic. He waited patiently. The true target this time was a divinity. If the Death Defier Alliance couldn’t even kidnap a sovereign-level immortal, they might as well wave the white flag.
As Gu Longyu expected, although the stalemate was drawn out much longer than anticipated, a flash of light enveloped everyone. When the light died down, Yinian and the members of the Death Defier Alliance had vanished. The previous clash had eliminated many immortals of the Temple of Death and their allies, but a few still survived.
The survivors swiftly took out their Xiyi Talismans and urgently reported what had just happened.
The destination chosen by the Death Defier Alliance was a remote region in outer space. They had three considerations in making this decision.
First, the fourth planet was still too close to Planet Heavensong. They didn’t know if the Goddess of Death would be able to unleash that beam again if they brought Yinian there.
Second, forcibly teleporting Yinian already made the results imprecise. If they attempted to bring Yinian to Planet Whitesky, it remained unknown how far it would be from the desired location. Although the Ancient Sky Sect had torn off its facade and ruled the entire planet, it didn’t mean that the Temple of Death had not embedded its agents on Planet Whitesky. If they were unlucky, their plan to capture Yinian would fail, causing subsequent plans to fall through.
Third and finally, it was to capture Yinian. They teleported the target to a remote region because they believed that not even a divinity would be able to attack from such a vast distance. The entire point was to draw her out. In addition, they also wanted to capture Yinian. Although they had already prepared for the goddess to arrive without capturing him, actually capturing him gave more leeway to their plans.
The Death Defier Alliance was unsure how far the Xiyi Talisman could be used. They also wanted to test it, but the location they chose was incredibly remote, even farther than the recorded boundary of the Death Goddess Planetary Alliance. Traveling to and from it required vast amounts of resources.
In fact, the Ancient Sky Sect had used one of their interplanetary teleportation arrays to test the longest distance the array could send a target. To ensure that both the target and the array could return safely, the controller was also a participant. Unfortunately, the initial cost of teleportation was too high, and the emperor never returned.
The Ancient Sky Sect lost a rare space emperor and the interplanetary teleportation array. Because they wanted to keep it hidden from the Temple of Death, they didn’t equip him with a Xiyi Talisman, making it impossible for the space emperor to report his condition.
However, this did not matter to Gu Longyu. He immediately resumed his attack on Yinian after the teleportation finished. If Yinian was left unattended, it was not impossible for him to escape with his concealment method. Once he fled too far, even Gu Longyu would not be able to defeat him.
Empress Wintersnow and the other controllers of the interplanetary teleportation arrays distanced themselves. They were not combatants. Even though they comprehended the Law of Space, they hadn't majored in it. The other immortal sovereigns spread out but didn’t attack. The previous clash had already taught them that their power was ineffective against Yinian. Rather than waste their energy, they prepared themselves to prevent Yinian from escaping.
And so, Gu Longyu and Yinian clashed again. Although trapped in this unknown place, Yinian did not fret. He had the confidence to survive as long as he did not give up. Such was the confidence the Nine-Five Scripture granted him. And as the Death Defier Alliance suspected, he could still access the Xiyinet with his Xiyi Talisman.
Gu Longyu solidly suppressed Yinian, causing countless injuries to the latter’s body. But just like before, those injuries were negligible to Yinian. Gu Longyu also had his fair share of injuries, but compared to Yinian’s, they were like paper cuts.
If the battle continued, it was foreseeable that it would only end when one side used up all their qi.
In outer space, immortals could only rely on their own methods and internal clocks to quantify time. Unfortunately, this was a difficult task even for immortals. Only those with peerless willpower could remain steadfast. Even Gu Longyu could not guarantee an accurate gauge of the passage of time.
Aside from those two prerequisites, mastering the Law of Time like Yinian was also a viable option. Not that he needed it. Even if his willpower did not let him keep track of time, the Xiyinet allowed him to accurately grasp its passage.
What felt like one hundred and nine hours to Gu Longyu was, in reality, only ninety-seven hours.
At that exact moment, Yinian’s movement halted for a split second. Not just him—Gu Longyu also sensed it. Unlike Yinian, he knew who the new arrivals were. They were immortal sovereigns and emperors who had arrived ahead of time.
Because of the imprecise teleportation, it took them nearly four days to arrive. Just because the previous immortal sovereigns could not do much to Yinian did not mean these ones couldn’t either. Especially since the combined number reached a staggering thirty-three, not including Gu Longyu. True, nearly ninety-five percent of them exuded auras of near death, but that did not make it any less shocking.
The Death Defier Alliance knew the difficulty of capturing Yinian, so they made several plans. Unfortunately, they never expected that all of their plans would be useless against Yinian back on the third planet. That did not mean they were without other methods.
The thirty-three immortal sovereigns gathered together, followed by over three hundred immortal emperors. Yinian saw this and wanted to interfere, but how could Gu Longyu allow that?
So Yinian could only watch, helpless, as those immortal sovereigns and immortal emperors formed a war formation. He could recognize their actions. They were creating a war formation, but he had never heard of one requiring so many immortal sovereigns and emperors.
Yinian could only think of one reason, but he dared not imagine it. Even though he had confidence in his abilities, it was still a daunting proposition. Not even Gu Longyu had the confidence.
Slowly, the immortal sovereigns and emperors were enveloped by a sacred light. The light formed a bloated sphere, but it swiftly condensed into a humanoid form. Just as it seemed the transformation was complete, a divine light erupted from its center, covering the humanoid light. It didn’t just change its appearance—the aura gained a hint of divinity.
Yinian realized the core reason why this divine war formation succeeded. The divine light that erupted during its formation reminded Yinian of the divine artifact he had seen in the Temple of Death. Despite the successful setup, the war formation still had an unstable aura. In fact, it could only be considered a pseudo-divine war formation.
Gu Longyu stared at it with envy. He once possessed a divine artifact, but that was during his time as the Dragon Emperor. He was still an immortal emperor at the time, so he couldn’t unleash much of its might, which contributed to his fall. Even now, he didn’t know where that divine artifact had ended up. He was much less fortunate in this life, and this was the first time he had sensed a divine artifact, ignoring the god-killing arm.
Although the pseudo-divine war formation released many fluctuations, Yinian and Gu Longyu’s battle only slowed slightly. Sword and saber lights filled their surroundings, but the objective had changed. Yinian was doing everything in his power to escape, while Gu Longyu was doing everything in his power to keep him in place.
Finally, the pseudo-divine giant moved. Its movement was slow and cumbersome, but that only increased its oppressive aura. It moved its hand toward Yinian. The movement seemed slow and even clumsy, but Yinian felt as if the hand had almost instantly reached him.
Gu Longyu could no longer engage in battle against Yinian and quickly retreated. He had no doubt that he would suffer heavy injuries if he were accidentally hit by the pseudo-divine war formation.
Without Gu Longyu entangling him, Yinian vanished. Alas, the pseudo-divine giant continued its action as if Yinian had not just disappeared. Seconds later, Yinian reappeared. The giant hand had grazed his body, knocking him into the distance. It caused him to spit out a mouthful of black gas filled with tiny motes of light. Not only that, cracks covered his body. They weren’t as numerous as the ones inflicted over the long period of battle, but they stretched across his entire body.
Neither Yinian nor Gu Longyu expected the pseudo-divine war formation to cause so much damage. Strictly speaking, the war formation’s power was only around five to ten times that of a peak sovereign war formation. The power fluctuated because of its instability, and while it may sound like a lot, it was a far cry from a true half-divinity cultivator.
Yet it had such a suppressive effect on someone like Yinian, who defied common sense. Yinian and Gu Longyu didn’t know this, but it was thanks to the mystery contained within the divine artifact at the core of the war formation. The war formation simply acted as a source of energy and a carrier of the divine artifact’s mystery. Only someone who wielded the power of a divine law could resist it.
Logically speaking, Yinian should not have been able to resist the pseudo-divine war formation, yet he managed to—even if barely. Had it been Gu Longyu, he would have been taken down instantly.
Gu Longyu had stopped in his tracks. If he foolishly joined, he was more liable to be injured by his ally than help. Still, he couldn’t help but frown. If he were in the same position as Yinian, he didn’t believe he could escape. He was stronger, yet he could not accomplish the same feats. Ultimately, Gu Longyu chalked it up to Yinian’s strange immortal body.
Although he didn’t lower his guard, Gu Longyu stood by and watched. He understood that his role had come to an end. He no longer had the chance to defeat Yinian, but that was life.
As he planned to stand by and watch, an aura suddenly covered the entire space, freezing his body in place. Not just him—even the pseudo-divine war formation was no different from a mortal under that pressure.
Without anyone noticing, a figure appeared. She possessed the upper half of a woman and the lower half of a snake. Although a silk cloth covered the lower half of her face, no one would doubt her beauty just from seeing her eyes. Of course, those foolish enough to gaze directly into her eyes would feel the call of death.
For she was the Goddess of Death, Nuyi.
Gu Longyu stared at the goddess—not into her eyes, of course. After seeing her in person, he felt excitement, because it proved that the Divine Realm existed. His eyes bore witness to that proof. A divinity of law was nothing like a divinity of faith. Comparing the latter to the former was an insult. Despite the excitement, his eyes also carried a trace of befuddlement. He felt as if he had seen her somewhere before.
The goddess would not care for a mere immortal sovereign’s thoughts. Not including her tail, the Goddess of Death stood over twenty meters tall. She was practically minuscule before the pseudo-divine war formation. Yet in terms of aura, the pseudo-divine war formation was akin to an ant before a true divine being.
The Goddess of Death merely stared at the pseudo-divine war formation. Before Gu Longyu could react, the formation fell apart, revealing the immortal sovereigns and immortal emperors that composed it, along with the divine artifact that fueled its powerful mystery. For these immortals, who awoke from their stasis, the Goddess of Death could send them to their deaths far more easily than those who had not reached the end of their lifespans. She was practically their nemesis.
Just like Gu Longyu, Yinian stared at the Goddess of Death in a daze. He also felt a familiar sensation from the mysterious goddess. Only this familiarity carried far more intimacy, and he felt like he wanted to cry.
But before he could call out, the situation changed.
The divine artifact that had been lying dormant after the deaths of the immortal sovereigns and emperors cracked. The crack didn’t last long, as the entire artifact shattered, and a blazing heat engulfed the surrounding region.
“Ahhh!” Yinian cried out. He could feel his entire body burning up. Not just him, but Gu Longyu as well. It felt even worse for him, despite his powerful immortal body.
However, the two were not the main targets of this energy. The source of the heat was the nova that appeared from the divine artifact. The only reason it could be described as a nova was that it appeared akin to a condensed star, but in reality, the star-like shell was only an aftereffect of the true divine artifact.
It was an arrow-shaped god-killing arm—Brahmastra!
Although it seemed like the heat lasted a long time, the arrow had already shot forward. By the time Yinian and Gu Longyu cried out, the divine arrow had already pierced through the Goddess of Death and continued on its way.
Brahmastra burned brightly as it shot into the distance, but eventually, the light died down and the unbearable heat cooled.
Yinian opened his eyes and stared in worry. When he saw the Goddess of Death’s state, his eyes widened in shock and despair.
“Mother!”
