Chapter 135: Chapter 135: Fighting Back and Forth

Although there weren’t many people left on this side of the ancient town, their numbers had been severely depleted after the battle with the strange fish. Nevertheless, these survivors still outnumbered Gu Fan’s group and were beginning to semi-surround them.

"What should we do, do we fight?" Jie asked nervously, gripping his baseball bat tightly. However, seeing that the enemy was also armed with clubs, he didn’t feel as confident about having the upper hand anymore.

Lu Yi quietly suggested, "Sister Su, if you could take down half of them by yourself, we might stand a chance."

"I’ll do my best," replied Su Hui, feeling the pressure. Even with her exceptional skill, she knew she couldn’t defeat so many people alone, especially when she needed to protect Lin Xi and Qin Jia as well.

Just then, a walkie-talkie on one of the enemies buzzed to life. "Have they arrived yet? How’s the situation over there? Do you need reinforcements?" it said.

With lightning speed, Su Hui kicked the walkie-talkie out of the man’s hand. It flew straight towards Gu Fan.

"I got it!" Gu Fan caught the walkie-talkie midair and replied, "All clear, we’ve handled it." Having said that, he switched the device off, signaling they no longer required any assistance. This bred confidence within the group, spurring them to fight fearlessly.

"Bastards, capture them all," one of their opponents commanded. This side heavily outnumbered them and Su Hui was the first to confront them. With a crossbow in hand, she easily made them retreat with a simple threat.

"What are you all hiding for!" Su Hui lost her patience, handed her crossbow to Xu Haowen, and charged at them wielding a club. Although the enemies also had clubs, she easily overpowered them with her skill and experience, making it look effortless.

Before long, screams filled the air. The club-holding hands of their foes seemed to have been broken. They were shrieking in pain, unable to even clutch their weapons.

Su Hui unleashed her ferocity, soaring through the air and landed successive kicks on an opponent, sending him flying backward and knocking others over in his path, scattering them like bowling pins.

Gu Fan certainly could fight too, but he could only handle one or two opponents at a time, taking away their club and using it as his weapon, and started fighting them off.

After Su Hui, Gu Fan was the most skilled fighter in their group. However, others like Ouyang Jin swinging a shovel and Jie swinging a baseball bat, managed to keep a group back thanks to the longer reach of their weapons and the enemy’s lack of skill.

Xu Haowen, Teacher Liu, Professor Luo, Qin Jia, and Lin Xi huddled together as the enemies approached, but the sight of Xu Haowen aiming the crossbow their way immediately made them back off. Little did they know, he didn’t even know how to use the thing.

A few brave ones charged at Lin Xi, only to be sprayed in the face with wolf repellent by Lin Xi and Qin Jia. It caused a burning sensation in their eyes, and they screamed in pain.

Du Jun fought alone. Despite taking countless hits, he fought back fiercely with his taser, rendering his attackers unconscious with every successful hit, causing them to convulse on the ground.

The unluckiest of them all was Lu Yi who was attacked by five men simultaneously. Cornered, with numerous hits to his shield, he could only hope for reinforcements as he huddled within the protective barrier of his shield.

The situation quickly developed. Su Hui took down six men, Du Jun tasered five, and Gu Fan knocked out two. Seeing the sudden decrease in numbers, the opponents panicked and quickly retreated, leaving behind their companions.

Jie wanted to pursue them, but Su Hui stopped him. There was an old saying that she intended to convey: don’t chase a desperate enemy.

Next, they dealt with those who had failed to escape by tying them up, ready for interrogation.

Gu Fan’s first question was, "Tell me, are your coffins carrying our missing classmates?"

The captives responded with indifference, not showing any interest in answering Gu Fan’s question, which greatly annoyed him. It was this group that caused them to live in fear for the past year. Each time he thought about those experiences, he felt like biting them to death. ƒreewebɳovel.com

"Alright, I’ll ask something else then. Why are you here? What is it about Qianye Country that attracts you?" Again, Gu Fan’s question was met with silence, leaving him annoyed and frustrated.

"Fine, I respect your toughness. I won’t continue pressurizing you. Just tell me, are our classmates still alive?" Gu Fan looked at the people earnestly, hoping they would at least answer this question.

One of them, his tone laced with contempt, retorted, "Is that question necessary? The lives of your classmates are no longer important. You should know in your heart that you can’t save them. So it will end the same way whether you ask or not."

"Won’t talk, huh? Stubborn, huh? Good, very good." Gu Fan suddenly scoffed and looked solemn. With a sudden swing, he clobbered the man’s head with his stick, causing blood to stream from the gash he created.

Another swing and the second man got hit, blood spilling from his head. Gu Fan didn’t hold back; he punched, kicked, and hit them hard with his stick, aiming to injure all these men, but they clenched their teeth and remained silent.

After a while, Gu Fan grew tired; he would eventually admit that these men were indeed an unyielding bunch.

Soft words didn’t work, and neither did torture. Gu Fan took a deep breath, glanced at the weird fish flapping in the water, and said, "You’re thinking that even though I beat you hard, I won’t take your lives. So you close your mouths and refuse to talk, right?"

The men looked back at Gu Fan with defiant eyes, conveying that they were confident he wouldn’t dare to kill them. Gu Fan’s face darkened at their audacity.

To everyone’s surprise, Gu Fan proceeded to drag one of the men towards the river with the clear intent to dunk him in.

"No way, this can’t be real." Lu Yi had trouble believing the scene in front of him as Lin Xi couldn’t bear to watch. Du Jun’s brows knitted together while Su Hui remained impassive.

As Gu Fan dragged the man, he fumed, "Think about this past year. You must feel so satisfied, treating us like monkeys and manipulating us at will. Determining our fate, watching from the shadows as we squirmed in fear, unease, and anxiety. The power to control lives must have given you quite a thrill. You surely cannot comprehend living in constant terror or constantly having nightmares. Or what it feels like to face the parents of our missing classmates. You don’t understand how your actions have shattered twelve families. Have you ever thought about the consequences?"

His words fueled Lu Yi, Jie, and Lin’s indignant rancor. They were tired of the torments over the last year. Their inner rage ignited, causing them to lose all sympathy for the men.

Though Professor Luo didn’t initially support Gu Fan’s violent approach, he now understood just how much pain and fury Gu Fan had been repressing. Faced with the captives’ dismissive attitudes, Gu Fan’s outburst was inevitable.

However, when Gu Fan reached the riverside, indicating that he really would throw the man into the river, the captive looked terrified to the point of surrender, even closing his eyes in anticipation of the end.

Yet, Gu Fan paused and didn’t throw the captive, furious though he was, trembling with rage and desiring to throw them all in. Still, he was unable to follow through.

Seeing this, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. It was a relief that no lives were taken, and none of them wanted Gu Fan to descend into such action.

And Su Hui, who knew that Gu Fan wasn’t the type to become a monster in a fit of rage, stayed calm throughout.

Nonetheless, the captives showed no gratitude for Gu Fan’s mercy. Instead, they laughed, mocking his lack of courage, asserting that Gu Fan was the one who had lost. Their laughter grated on everyone’s nerves.

When Gu Fan dragged the captive back, the captives looked at him with disdain, as if to say, "Watch how much a greenhorn like you can do to us."

Gu Fan, rather than getting angry this time, fell deep into thought. He had to admit, when it comes to extracting information, he wasn’t very good at it. So, he turned to Su Hui for help.

Su Hui simply shrugged; powerless to assist. During her time in the police force, she had the advantage of authority, which imposed a significant mental strain on prisoners. But now, the captives had a psychological edge, so extracting information from them was challenging and time-consuming.

If they cannot extract any useful intelligence or know their enemies thoroughly, they could face significant difficulties and unexpected dangers ahead. That was Gu Fan’s main concern and why he was so ruthless in his interrogation efforts.

"Alright, let’s move." Gu Fan took a deep breath, and was the first to enter the gate, while the others packed up their belongings and touched their weapons as they set off.

As for the captives, they remained tightly bound. While they struggled to free themselves, they couldn’t, because the bindings were too tight, courtesy of Su Hui. The only solace was that Gu Fan was decent enough to bandage their injuries. However, he also suggested in passing, "Maybe we should break their limbs for our safety."

When they heard this, pretty much everyone nodded in agreement. Even Professor Luo thought it to be a viable option, considering that they had already been attacked twice by the captives and were quite furious about it.

However, not long after their departure, another group arrived on a raft. On arriving and seeing the chaos, they realized they were late and should have acted sooner.

Sister Leng looked at the bound captives, manifesting a cold and unfriendly demeanor, and said, "I don’t like these people. Make them disappear."

"Understood, Sister Leng!" Her subordinates acted accordingly, lifting each bound captive and throwing them into the river with no hesitation.
