Chapter 23 - No Escaping

Leaning his broad back over the couch, Cassius had found himself a seat on the balcony of the second floor, allowing him to look at the enchanting maze from above and for his eyes to follow his most entertaining human pet.

He was the only one who was watching the maze, closely staring at Arabella's white figure as she traversed into the maze, her small legs moving faster, her eyes hopeful to leave. Even the sound of her heartbeat which he could hear from the distance they possess were drumming with delight at the sweet thought of escaping him was dangling sweetly across her eyes.

But how could he allow her to leave? How could she dare to think about escaping Him?

Cassius chuckled at Bella's foolishness— the foolishness of thinking that he was someone fair who would kindly play according to the rules. If she had begged him with those large eyes of hers, perhaps his heart would have been swayed a little, but he wasn't going to simply let her leave or hold on to the idea that she could leave the castle from his grasp.

She had became his pet and he would know teach her that her life was on his hands, that he is her saving grace. The only reason why she still survives is because of his grace and affection, and to win him over, she ought to listen to him.

"The poor weak human," chuckled Lady Lilah, "Who would bet that she would win?"

"Sounds fun, should we bet?"

"By money? Or how about- the one who won would be receiving the taste of her blood."

Cassius's eyes narrowed. His gaze brushed coldly from the maze over Lady Clarissa who had spoken and a deadly threat left his icy lips, "Stop drooling over my pet's blood. This will be my last warning on everyone here who thinks they could get a bite from my plate."

The ladies jumped, their backs straightening as they realized that Cassius wasn't playing about his interest to his pet. If they really do bite Bella's neck, it was their heads that would be rolling on the ground next. Though the vampiress were mostly a jealous bunch, they fear death and those who would bring it.

"Then I should bet first with money," someone's voice rang from behind.

The lady dressed in the blue gown marched from the door, pushing aside her maids who were trying to fix her dress as it annoyed her. She looked at the maze and frowned, "Which foolish human had stepped into the garden again?"

"My pet," Cassius answered without looking behind to the girl who had just entered.

"Your pet? You, Brother Cassius?" The lady who had came is none other than Princess Marissa, Cassius's sister who had decided to live away from the castle. She had heard a sudden message from her brother that he would be dropping for a visit today but it seemed these ladies who thought he had came to see them was far wrong. Her brother had only came here to have fun, to trick his pet into entering the enchanted maze which no human could ever escape from.

"Why? Even I can have fun, don't you think Marissa?" Cassius could tell how suspicious his sister was to his sudden change in attitude. But he brushed it off, disregarding the look as he turned again to eye Arabella, "Then put your bet sister, what do you bet on- her leaving the maze or her failure?"

"Failure," Marissa answered at once. She ordered all her servants to leave and make her way to sit at one of the couch where the ladies immediately stood up to give her a seat.

Marissa whose black hair was cut short to the length where it reach her neck open her folded fan with a flick of her wrist. She covered the lower half of her face, her red eyes following Bella inside the maze before she muttered in a whisper, "Have I seen her before?"

Cassius heard his sister's mutters but proceeded to dismiss it. Instead he announced, "I bet on her leaving the maze." A flicker passed through Marissa's eyes that immediately turned to look at him, her lips opening slightly in a gasp. He shrugged at ease, "Why? Surprised that I'm favoring my pet? She's cute, smart and brave, you will be surprised when you see her escape the maze."

"How can I not be surprised? You're not someone who would allow their opponent to simply play a game where they could win," Marissa answered, she then frowned at the human girl, wondering aloud, "What makes her different?"

"You will see," Cassius said, leaning at the couch lazily as the maid hurriedly massage his shoulders only to see his refusal and quickly ran away from fear. Cassius narrowed his eyes, "And tell your maid not to touch a royal body. It's death sentence the next time they try to touch me."

Marissa's lips pursed. She would have brushed Cassius's words lightly but she didn't want to see more blood in her mansion, especially knowing well that Cassius had never told an empty threat. Once he said a threat- whether lightly or jokingly- he would do as he promise.

Marissa became interested in the human girl, after all not many could ever attract Cassius's attention. There had been so many many humans yet Arabella was the very first one to ever be chosen by him, meaning she held a different charm.

But what kind of charm? What charm would be powerful enough to move a heart that had already stopped beating?

Meanwhile, under the bright sun that had caused a sweat to drip from her forehead, Arabella who had just made a right turn into a maze frown in frustration when she had met another dead end.

She had just been inside this maze for an hour but she couldn't feel herself making any progress inside this maze. Whenever she made a turn to one path and another, she found a dead end which had began to make her wonder if there was an exit in the first place.
