Chapter 117: Chapter 117: Hiding the Secret for a Lifetime

Miles watched as her entire face flushed and reached out to touch her forehead, "Why is your face so red?"

"It’s hot!" Vera Yves smiled at him, "The air conditioning in the hospital is too strong, I’ll go wash my face."

Vera took her things into the bathroom, wanting to throw them in the trash, but afraid Miles would see, she ended up putting them in her jacket pocket.

She fanned her face with her hand before leaving.

Miles sat on the sofa, playing with the snacks she bought, "I didn’t expect the snacks from childhood are still being sold now."

Vera sat next to him and only then noticed the injury on his face, "What happened to your face?"

Miles touched his wound, "Got into a fight last night."

"You’re a lawyer, and yet you break the law?"

"Vera, I don’t want to hide it from you. Yesterday, I got a call from Jane Shea’s agent, saying they couldn’t reach her. So later, I went to find her and saw her being harassed, so I intervened."

"Is she okay?"

"She’s fine." Miles held her hand, "I know I shouldn’t be involved with her anymore, but she’s alone in Imperia, and I can’t just ignore her."

"So how far do you plan to go?" Vera asked calmly, "Miles, not everyone is your responsibility or duty."

Miles tightened his grip on her hand, "Vera, I know, but I need some time."

Isn’t two years enough?

She had seen Winston Valentine hold Cecilia Vaughn in his arms, and could easily imagine how Miles protected Jane Shea.

"Miles, I just hope you remember what you promised me."

Miles pulled her into his arms, "No matter what, you will always be my first choice."

Vera pressed on his wound, causing Miles to frown in pain.

"I knew it, the wound has split open again."

"It doesn’t hurt at all." Miles smiled at her, "Didn’t you say it’s hot inside? Let’s go outside for a walk. I think it’s snowing."

The two walked together to the hospital’s backyard, where a thin layer of snow covered the ground.

Miles placed her hand in his jacket pocket, "When I’m out of the hospital, I’ll make a snowman for you, okay?"

"No, your snowmen are hideous."

Miles pretended to flick her, but Vera dodged with a laugh, "You just promised to go skiing with me, and now you’re injured. No sincerity at all."

"Who told you to keep your distance from me?"

"Is it far?" Vera laughed, letting go of his hand and ran a few steps ahead.

"Are you teasing me because I can’t walk fast?"

"In a few days, I’m going skiing with Zoe and not taking you."

Miles strode forward, worrying that his wound would reopen, Vera quickly took a few steps back toward him, "Don’t walk so fast!"

Miles pulled her back into his arms, "Will you still keep hiding?"

Vera touched his wound.

Miles looked down at her, "Are you taking me skiing?"

Vera deliberately avoided looking at him, while Miles caught her gaze, not giving her a chance to escape.

Their noses touched, meeting his smiling eyes, Vera surrendered, "We’ll go when you’re better, okay?"

They held hands again, walking forward together.

Winston Valentine sat on the balcony, watching the two of them in the snowy scene, his gaze growing more profound.

Were they just kissing?

Theodore Xavier walked out to the balcony, shivering from the cold, "You’re still a patient, why are you torturing yourself like this?"

Winston watched as Vera stood on tiptoe to fix Miles’s fallen scarf before Miles pinched her cheek with a smile, and the two walked farther and farther away until they disappeared into the snowy landscape.

"I won’t die."

"You won’t die, but doesn’t it hurt?"

It really did hurt. How could she be in another man’s arms so soon, laughing so happily?

Winston got up and went back inside the ward, with Theodore following, "Have you heard? There’s been big news in The Dunn Family recently."

Winston obviously wasn’t interested in this news.

Theodore, however, seemed eager to share, "Back in the day, someone from The Dunn Family was quite the charmer, with a bunch of illegitimate children outside."

Winston turned on the TV to block out the noise.

Theodore cleared his throat, "Guess what happened."

"If you’re so bored, why not mop the floor?"

Theodore clicked his tongue, "His eldest son started dating a girl, brought her home for dinner, and as he looked at the girl, he realized she seemed familiar. Turns out, she’s from his youthful indiscretions."

Winston’s gaze faltered for a moment, and seeing his interest, Theodore continued excitedly, "The girlfriend turned into a half-sister. Isn’t that just dramatic?"

Winston’s expression turned somewhat unnatural.

"You think it’s dramatic too, right? At this point, they’d have to break up, don’t you think? If they really broke up, it wouldn’t even make the news."

Theodore stroked his chin and tutted, "But the eldest son directly took the girlfriend abroad and registered for marriage!"

Winston’s expression darkened.

Theodore patted his shoulder, "Even people with half-sisters can elope, what are you hesitating over?"

If he could keep this secret for a lifetime, could he get her back?

"After all, she’s just your cousin in name. You should marry her, especially since Cecilia’s been waiting for you all these years."

Winston leaned back on the sofa, forcefully suppressing those thoughts in his heart.

In the following days, Vera successfully helped Old Mrs. Valentine recover, her health improving day by day, even able to take a few steps.

Miles was also discharged smoothly, with Penelope Langley arranging a place for him close to his law office and not too far from Vera’s apartment.

Having lost enough time at the hospital, Miles was now extremely busy back at the office, and they saw each other even less than they did at the hospital.

Hannah Hayes called Vera a few times to bring Miles back to The Yves Family for dinner, but Vera declined.

For one, Miles was really busy, and two, to give this relationship some space to grow, she didn’t want to let Hannah Hayes know just yet.

After being refused several times, Hannah Hayes pulled out her trump card, "Since you say he’s not your boyfriend, I arranged a blind date for you tonight. Either you bring him back, or you’ll obediently go on the blind date."

"Mom, I don’t want to go on a blind date."

"You spend every day cooped up in your apartment studying medical books. How are you going to meet any eligible bachelors without going on a blind date?"

Vera didn’t believe Hannah Hayes had truly arranged a blind date for her, "Fine, then I’ll go on the blind date."

Hannah Hayes hung up the phone in anger.

A few minutes later, she really sent a time and place.

Vera ignored it, staying in the study, reviewing her collected materials, while Miles arranged for someone to help her find the remaining patients’ families, whose stories were similar to the first.

The doorbell rang, and Vera went to the door to find Rae Rhodes standing outside.

Vera opened the door, Rae’s eyes red as she looked at her, "Sister Vera, can I talk to you?"
