Tokyo: Rabbit Officer and Her Evil Partner-Chapter 836 - 503: Late-Night Conversation (Part 2)
"What are we here to discuss?" Kujo Yua asked.
"I gave him five minutes to defend himself. I must admit, someone who could rise to the position of Criminal Department Minister surely has some skills; I was almost persuaded by him."
Fushimi Roku was sitting in Kato Touma’s seat, with his heels resting on the desk, holding the phone between his shoulder and ear, using a folding knife to trim his nails.
Kujo Yua’s reaction was quick; instead of asking why he had to defend himself, she asked, "What was he missing that failed to convince you?"
"I hate when people hang up on me."
With that, Fushimi Roku directly hung up the phone.
Kujo Yua listened to the busy tone on the phone, suddenly sensing that something was wrong.
She personally led the guards to storm the building where Kato Touma was stationed, ordering full lockdown from top to bottom. A group rushed up the corridors with riot shields, throwing flashbangs into Kato Touma’s office.
With a loud bang, a bright light flashed through the windows and door of the office. The guards kicked the door open, storming in with guns, looking around but finding no one else.
The assailant had already fled.
Kato Touma was still alive, bound to the sofa, covered in blood. On the wall behind him, the word "Heavenly Punishment" was written in blood.
The crowd gathered around, and only then did they realize Kato Touma’s eyes had been gouged out.
The stiff, wrinkled face was left with only two bloody empty holes.
"I shouldn’t have seen it..."
"I know I was wrong..."
"I shouldn’t have gone to that place out of curiosity..."
Kato Touma, in a near-howl voice, kept repeating these sentences.
The guards shivered, not knowing what he meant.
Rescue personnel quickly arrived at the scene, administered an adrenaline injection to Kato Touma, and started a blood transfusion while rushing him to the hospital to prevent him from bleeding to death.
Kujo Yua knew what Kato Touma’s words meant.
Back then, when the Aum Truth Sect issued Invitation Letters, many went to the island out of curiosity.
Kujo Yua understood clearly that just stepping foot on the island meant tacit approving, indirectly colluding with the Aum Truth Sect, becoming their protector—however, as long as no one broke this fragile facade, everyone was simply there for sightseeing.
Whether or not there was collusion with the cult, whether benefits were exchanged, or whether there was abuse of power, was another matter.
It was for these reasons that Kujo Yua found investigations troublesome, pulling one string led to countless entanglements, and with officials shielding each other, you couldn’t just take drastic actions nor distinguish them one by one, hence ultimately no investigation was done.
Fushimi Roku didn’t kill Kato Touma, which meant Kato Touma had no private dealings with the Aum Truth Sect; he probably really was just there on Cat Island for social engagement.
Seeing things one shouldn’t see meant having one’s eyes gouged out.
Kujo Yua’s face darkened slightly. She had also been to Cat Island, she had also watched the trials from a distance... Does this mean, in Fushimi Roku’s view, she also ought to have her eyes gouged out?
How utterly absurd!
The severity of the matter was too grave; Kujo Yua could no longer turn a deaf ear to it.
She immediately convened a meeting, dragging subordinates out of their beds, and simultaneously sent out notifications to various officials, legislators, politicians, corporate presidents, or business executives—the lone wolf-style terror attacks had surfaced again in Tokyo, more dangerous than before.
At one a.m., Tokyo was put on lockdown once more.
In the Police Department conference room, officials from various levels gathered. This was an emergency meeting; those attending had already heard about the Criminal Department Minister’s attack on their way in.
Kujo Yua sat at the head, sipped a bit of hot coffee, looked around, and said:
"I suppose everyone already knows, one or two hours ago, Minister Kato was attacked, had his eyes gouged out, and the scene was left with the blood-written ’Heavenly Punishment’."
"It’s been more than a month, and Horie Kei’s accomplices still haven’t been caught, with new videos emerging every three days, broadcasted like popular TV shows during prime time."
"Delaying without action, public sentiment has reached this stage, terror attacks have become more frequent, a resolution must be presented."
...
After a moment of silence, the Public Security Minister asked, "Shouldn’t the top priority be capturing the assailant?"
"Capture one, then there’s the next. Can you arrest everyone in Tokyo?" Kujo Yua said, "The assailant must be caught, and the Cat Island list needs to be investigated. Who is funding the cult, and who is sheltering them must be thoroughly checked, to give the public an explanation!"
Everyone exchanged looks, no one responded.
Kujo Yua knew they would react this way. She had already said the same words over a month ago.
"Gentlemen, I’m acting for your own good. No matter who among you dies, things won’t be easy." Kujo Yua said sincerely.
The attendees responded in unison, outwardly respectful, yet internally skeptical.
It was merely a lone wolf attack, even if the perpetrator got away tonight, they won’t evade capture for long, like with Horie Kei.
The meeting confirmed the pursuit plan: increasing the bounty, publishing suspects’ photos in all media, continuous broadcasts on television and radio, checkpoints set at gas stations, train stations, bus terminals, shifting posts and patrols.
Tokyo City would be under lockdown for two days, the whole city combed through, summoning the Police Department’s surveillance, no fly would escape detection, there’s no belief that apprehending the assailant would be possible.
As one of the attendees, Fuyuyama Kentaro likewise felt exhausted and disenchanted.
He was the Head of the General Affairs Department’s Public Relations Division, responsible for coordinating publicity. After the meeting, it was up to him to contact television stations and newspapers, publish search warrants, and release bounty orders.
This task bore no pressure and was even somewhat dull.
Fuyuyama Kentaro yawned, texting during the meeting, casually chatting with the Security Department Minister opposite him.
On their days off, they liked to gamble on the island, having visited Cat Island a fortnight ago.
Though it was at the height of the storm, Cat Island hadn’t ceased operations. Gamblers couldn’t resist the urge, always itching for some entertainment by betting, so Fuyuyama Kentaro often went with friends to gamble, occasionally resorting to online gambling if tangled with work.
"Did you watch the subscription TV channel the day before?"
"Watched it, quite interesting, unexpected outcome on the fourth, made a small profit"
"Ah, I bet on the eighth, what a pity"
"The guy who wet his pants, right? wwww"
"He claims he’s a graduate of East University, seems quite clever"
"A smart person wouldn’t join that kind of competition"
Nowadays, TV channels require password input to watch, while Cat Island’s channel follows a membership model, requiring an island visit to acquire the subscription password for TV viewing.
Fuyuyama Kentaro glanced at the Security Department Minister, who gave him a smug smile.
Damn, why does this guy always bet correctly?
Does he have some insider information?
"Pay attention!" Kujo Yua scolded from the podium.
Fuyuyama Kentaro put away his phone, placed his hands on the table, and whispered ’sorry’.
When will this damned meeting end...
"Hence, we must comprehensively strengthen investigation efforts, hoping to pool wisdom and strength, to capture the suspect as soon as possible..."
As Kujo Yua emphasized the action guidelines, a light snap was heard, the conference room’s lights went out, the emergency lights came on, plunging the entire building into darkness.
Power outage?
Fuyuyama Kentaro was secretly delighted, thinking it couldn’t be better for the meeting to end early. He intended to return to his department to give out work instructions, then go home and turn on the TV for some light gambling. Tonight, he must win.
Immediately following, the conference room doors opened.
A man burst in with great vigor, his face lit by the red glow of the emergency lights, and Fuyuyama Kentaro recognized him—it was the man from the wanted poster!
Kujo Yua stood up, without orders, guards rushed forward, the Security Department Minister drew his weapon, ready to immediately subdue the suspect!
"Don’t get tense."
Fushimi Roku opened his coat, revealing a fragmentation grenade with the safety pin pulled, the ring tied to a string was looped around his thumb.
The guards froze in their tracks, the Security Department Minister dared not pull the trigger, one twitch of the suspect’s hand, and everyone in the conference room would die.
Director Kujo was right, this guy was just a madman!
Fushimi Roku was thoroughly enjoying himself tonight; ever since dating Minamoto Tamako, he hadn’t been this happy for a long time.
"I’m just here to have a late-night chat with you all." He displayed a genuinely joyful smile.
