Top Gamer Reincarnated as an Archmage-Chapter 39: Art of Runes (2)
"However, it all depends on the person’s innate talent for runes," she chuckled as she was clearly embarrassed about not being able to do the feat herself.
’Innate talent, hm?’ Klaus was sure he definitely had some kind of talent.
"Normally, it takes years for a mage to become a runesmith, and even then, most of the time, people just overpower them with spells...however—" She closed her mouth mid-sentence as she looked at the clock behind her.
"I have to finish the lecture now...we are only allowed twenty minutes to not take up a whole classroom due to the lack of interest in runes..." She seemed embarrassed at the fact that they had to leave.
’I see...’ Klaus looked at the clock, and it seemed like twenty minutes really did pass in the blink of an eye.
"Do make sure to learn some runes for the next class!" She chuckled, "well, at least try!" The metallic door sprung open, signalling the end of the class.
"I’m out!" The sleepy boy instantly dashed towards the door, showing that he clearly actually had no interest in the class.
Rhea was next as she slightly nodded, then slipped out of the classroom, embarrassed.
"Ah, so embarrassing..." Ravenna rubbed her lips, however, Klaus bowed slightly and spoke up.
"Thank you for the lecture...I will make sure to learn some runes," His yellow eyes met her ruby-coloured ones, and she smiled, then nodded.
"Do that, Klaus, and you will be strong!" She chuckled as she wiped away an imaginary tear, then hushed him out of the classroom, the metallic door closing behind him with a thud.
’That’s all for today, I think,’ he looked at his timetable, which had no other classes for the day.
’Yeah, that’s all,’ He put the timetable away in his pocket and the book under his armpits, then walked down the hallway.
He passed by some interesting folks, some were elves like he had seen in movies and books, and just like the librarian lady.
Some had cat ears, tails, however, most were still human.
’I guess we have some variety,’ he held back a chuckle as he walked outside the main building, back towards the dormitory. Not because he wanted to rest, but because he had something he wanted to do.
As soon as he stepped inside, the same sleeping receptionist greeted him as previously.
"Khm," he cleared his throat in an attempt to wake the snoozing man, however, it didn’t work.
So he did the next best thing: he slapped his hands on the table.
The man instantly bolted up, his eyes flying open like a door being kicked in.
"Ah, you brat, what do you want?" As soon as he saw it was just Klaus, he leaned back in his chair again as his eyes fluttered.
"I’ve heard that the first place enjoys a private training ground," Klaus smirked with his eyes closed whilst trying to ask about the location.
"Inside the academy, go to door 1D, that’s your training ground," he said whilst waving his hands, signalling for Klaus to leave and don’t bother him anymore.
"Thanks a lot," he turned and left instantly without hesitation.
The walk towards the academy was boring and it felt empty, possibly due to the lack of students since most people still had classes, however, Klaus wanted to try the runes.
He stepped inside the academy and looked around the hallway, trying to search for the door.
’It’s 1D...it should be the first around here..’ Soon after, he found the metallic entrance to the training ground, the door had runes flowing through it, way more runes than any of the walls on the hallway or the other doors.
’How do I open it?’ He just stood in front of it cluelessly, so he just decided to touch it.
The runes started glowing and the entrance spread open.
"Simple enough," he stepped inside and the door shut behind him, inside the room seemed endless.
"Still space magic, hm?" It was pure white, almost like he was standing inside nothingness, or in heaven.
"Almost like I died again," he chuckled as he turned. The entrance was there on the white wall, however, the room seemed to stretch endlessly in every single direction. It was bright despite no light or the sun.
He placed the book down on the ground and took a lotus seat. The floor felt warm for some reason, and there was no smell whatsoever. Nothing.
’I should have brought a runequill, hm?’ He opened the book and flipped to the first page.
"Vine shield..." That was written above a bunch of lines and a short description, which you could barely read even if you pulled the book directly to your eyes due to the text size.
"A vine emerges from the rune and protects you from incoming spells of the Ember class..." Klaus remembered Zephy’s explanation of the ranks.
"Ember is only the second rank..." Which meant the rune was pretty weak, however, he couldn’t trash talk it.
"I’m only a spark still...how do I even know when I rank up..?"
As soon as he said the words rank up, a red window flashed in front of him.
[Rank: Spark]
[Progress: 70%]
"Oh..." He looked at the display of his current level and chuckled awkwardly.
"Did I always have this feature..?" He asked from the system, however, no reply came whatsoever.
"Alright...Varenna said some mages don’t need runequills...let’s try," he stood and held the book with one hand and held out the other.
He channeled his mana just like when he would use a spell.
It felt warm inside his veins, then he swung his arm around, trying to imitate the directions of the lines in the book.
Both of his eyes were locked onto the description and display in the book. His arm seemed to move by itself, as if it was the simplest thing ever.
He finished the final stroke, and a surge of mana erupted from below, a sudden vine exploding out of the white ground, forming a shield in front of Klaus.
"Woah!" He fell on his ass, losing control over his mana, and the vine shield disappeared instantly.
"So I can do that..." He held back the urge to laugh hysterically. He looked down at his hands, which were shaking from the display and mana.
"I can become really strong.."
