Touchline Rebirth: From Game To Glory-Chapter 212: Pushing Forward
The crowd got louder during the break. When the players returned for the second half, purple smoke was still in the air. But the Crawley team looked different.
They didn't look defeated anymore.
Now, they looked focused and ready.
Niels stood at the tunnel entrance as they ran out. He didn't need to say anything. The quiet in the locker room and his clear instructions had already done the job.
The change was instant and easy to see.
Fiorentina kicked off, but the narrow diamond wasn't just sitting back anymore.
Dev Patel had changed the most. He played five yards deeper, linking the midfield trio Jamal, Tom, and Nate with the two centre-backs.
Now, he was asking for the ball instead of chasing it. The fancy moves were gone, replaced by quick, short passes that helped keep control of the game.
The biggest tactical change was how they covered the sides. When Fiorentina's left-back got the ball, Tom Whitehall quickly ran out to help Callum Haines, and Nate Sutton moved into the middle to cover for Tom.
The whole team moved together, making Fiorentina play slower, more predictable crosses instead of dangerous diagonal passes.
Fiorentina kept trying to break Crawley down, but the new shape was working. Every pass out wide was met with pressure. Every attempt to cut inside was blocked.
Crawley stayed patient. Dev Patel stayed at the heart of it all, collecting the ball, moving it quickly, keeping things calm. The midfield trio closed down space, forcing Fiorentina into safe, sideways passes.
Then came a chance.
Nate Sutton won the ball just inside his own half and passed it to Jamal, who turned and fed Dev. Dev looked up and sent a smart pass down the right for Tom Whitehall.
Tom burst forward and sent in a low cross across the box.
It was dangerous, too dangerous for Fiorentina to ignore but just out of Callum Haines' reach.
The crowd gasped.
It was so close.
Crawley didn't hang their heads. They reset quickly, pressing high as Fiorentina tried to play out.
The shift in momentum was clear.
No goal yet.
But the pressure was building.
In the 51st minute, Fiorentina made a dangerous attack. But Reece Darby won the ball in a tough challenge.
The ball bounced loose, and Jamal Osei though not feeling great was in the right spot. He stayed calm and passed the ball back to Liam McCulloch.
Crawley were starting to control the game.
At 54 minutes, Niels spotted Jamal Osei pulling at his thigh after a clearance. He called out, "Kieron! Jamal!"
Kieron Marsh (#19) came onto the pitch, replacing Jamal Osei (#6), who left to applause for his solid effort. Marsh brought fresh energy to midfield as Crawley stayed focused and ready.
As Jamal came off, he gave Niels a grim look and nodded.
"It's okay, coach. Just a tight muscle," he said quietly.
Niels replied, "Alright, rest up now. Kieron, I need you to bring energy and keep the game moving. Stay sharp in midfield."
Keiron Marsh, a player from the academy, immediately showed fearless energy.
Within minutes, he won two important tackles and used his quick reading of the game to intercept passes that Jamal, who was moving slowly, could only block.
The game sped up, but Crawley controlled the faster, more aggressive pace.
The constant pressure finally paid off with a goal created by the young players.
In the 68th minute, Thiago got the ball deep on the left side. Using his quick moves, he slipped past a sliding tackle and pushed forward, drawing two defenders with him.
Then, he made a smart pass to Dev Patel in the middle.
Dev took a touch, faked a shot, and chipped a delicate ball over the defense.
Korey Henry used his speed to get past the offside trap and chase the pass. He was one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
This time, Korey stayed calm, took a touch to control the ball, and then placed it perfectly into the bottom corner.
The bench exploded with cheers, but this time the goal felt deserved—a win for the team's tactics.
The Curva Fiesole fans didn't stop shouting, but for a moment, they were stunned.
Goaal.
1-1.
Right after the goal, Niels made his planned change to keep the momentum going and bring in better passing.
Paul Pogba (#27) came on to replace Tom Whitehall (#8). Tom had worked incredibly hard, running both in defense and attack without stopping.
As soon as Pogba came on, the midfield play improved. He made a perfect, long pass of about forty yards to Reece Darby on the right side.
The ball stopped right at Reece's feet, cutting through three lines of Fiorentina's defense and letting Crawley keep control for a while.
Reece quickly took advantage of the space. He pushed forward, drawing a defender toward him, then passed the ball inside to Marsh. Marsh controlled it smoothly and looked up.
He spotted Korey Henry making a run down the left wing and played a quick, sharp pass.
Korey took the ball in stride and sped past his marker. With only the goalkeeper to beat, he cut inside, looking for an opening.
The crowd held its breath as Korey aimed a low shot toward the far corner but the keeper dived and managed to push it away.
Crawley kept the pressure on, ready for the next chance.
Crawley was in full control, pushing hard for the winning goal. But they were also leaving themselves open to counterattacks. Niels knew he needed fresh energy and focus on the left side.
In the 80th minute, Niels made his last change.
Ellis Flynn (#22) came on for Callum Haines (#3).
"Ellis, stay disciplined. No risks. Reece, only go forward when you overlap. We want to win, but we need strong defense now," Niels said.
Ellis Flynn, known for his good positioning and discipline, helped strengthen the defense. The last ten minutes were tense, with both teams careful but eager to win.
The clock ticked down as Crawley held their shape, blocking every attack Fiorentina threw at them. Reece stayed close to the touchline, ready to join the attack only when it was safe.
Ellis kept the backline organized, cutting out crosses and making key clearances.
As the game moved into the 90th minute, the referee signaled four minutes of stoppage time. Crawley held firm, focused on keeping possession.
Pogba's calm control in midfield helped slow down Fiorentina's attacks and kept their pressure at bay.
The fans were on edge, knowing every second counted.
But in the 92nd minute, everything changed with a moment of brilliance. Fiorentina sent a long hopeful ball forward.
Harry Thompson jumped to clear it with a header, but the ball landed perfectly for a Fiorentina midfielder about thirty yards out.
Without hesitation, he fired the ball straight back into the box.
The ball bounced off Liam McCulloch's foot and flew high toward the penalty spot.
The Fiorentina striker, quiet all half, reacted just a moment faster than Ellis Flynn. He stretched out his leg and poked the ball past a diving Adam Fletcher.
Goaaal!.
Fiorentina 2-1 Crawley Town. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
The stadium erupted with noise. The Fiorentina fans cheered with relief and joy, their voices drowning out the disappointment of the Crawley players.
The referee looked at his watch, and just a few seconds after Crawley kicked off, he blew the long, final whistle.
The players stood still tired, heartbroken, and beaten. They had won the tactical fight, but lost the game.
Final Score: Fiorentina 2 - 1 Crawley.
