Chapter 74: Ch 74: Death.

It carried an eerie weight, as if it had whispered from beyond the veil of death itself.

Moments later, the figure holding the scythe began to materialize.

The being that had been lurking in the void became visible.

And it was as one would imagine the Grim Reaper to be.

A towering entity wreathed in purplish-black flames.

A skeletal figure clad in a tattered black robe, its entire form exuding an aura of dread.

The void trembled beneath its presence, and the very fabric of existence seemed to writhe in protest.

Ye Tian merely smirked.

"Heh? You want me to become your knight?" he scoffed.

"You mean the disciple of someone who barely understands the true meaning of death?"

The entity’s flames flickered.

"...Hah?" it growled, its hollow voice tinged with irritation.

"I am the **God of Death**, you fool."

Ye Tian tilted his head.

"God of Death?" he echoed, his smirk widening. "More like the so-called Apostle of Death."

His voice lowered, turning razor-sharp.

"Or should I call you... the Gatekeeper of the White Dungeon?"

A pause.

And then—laughter.

A deep, thunderous cackle that sent shockwaves through the void.

"BAHAHAHAHAHA!"

The entity’s flames flared wildly, its skeletal jaw splitting into a grotesque grin.

"Goodness, you recognize me?" it rasped, delighted.

"Too bad though—**I can’t let you live.** It’s either you or me."

Ye Tian slowly lifted his hand.

And with a flick of his finger...

Clink.

The scythe shattered.

The weapon that had reaped countless souls—the blade that exuded the power of death itself—crumbled into dust.

The entity froze.

Ye Tian’s smirk turned menacing.

"...Say what?" he murmured, his voice carrying the weight of absolute dominance.

The void trembled.

The reaper’s flaming eyes burned with disbelief.

***

Moments ago, The death reaper who seemed all high and mighty, now stood completely baffled only a few steps away from ye tian.

How?

Watching his biggest strength—the scythe, infused with the very essence of death—shatter with just a flick of his fingers, The reaper unconsciously took a few steps back.

"What happened to your bravado? Weren’t you being all mighty and invincible just a few moments ago?" Ye Tian mocked, the grin on his face was living proof of his confidence.

However, Destroying a weapon infused with the true law of the world, took a huge toll on Ye Tian.

Ye Tian’s hands started to tremble, veins started to pop up all over his body.

’Dang it!’ Ye Tian cursed in his mind, ’Can’t believe just a simple weapon like that took more than 90% of my mana...’

Depleting mana was a very common occurrence, especially for mages. But for someone who was in much later stages, where mana itself had become one with the mage, depleting mana was equivalent to depleting his own lifespan.

Ye Zhao, standing beside him, too, felt a sudden change in the power levels. His powers dropped instantaneously to the level of that of a 9th-circle mage.

But even he understood that destroying that weapon must’ve taken a huge load on Ye Tian.

’It’s shameful... to think there’ll be a day where I won’t be able to protect my junior.’ Ye Zhao lowered his eyes. He was disappointed in himself, in his own incompetent powers that couldn’t protect his junior brother.

Ye Zhao clenched his fists tightly, his fingers digging into his own palms, ’Even though the enemy is right before me, I can’t help but look at him, taking all the burden to himself... How great of senior brother I am...’

While on the other side, Ye Tian tried his best to look not bothered at all. Even just a slight change in his breath, a sudden movement of any of his muscles would’ve made it clear that even he had reached his limit.

The reaper slowly regained his composure, his mind swarming with all kinds of thoughts.

’How... How could he destroy the weapon blessed by the death itself?’

’Even if he somehow destroyed it, how’s he still alive!??’

’Could it be that he’s more powerful than the death itself?’

Reaper’s own existence had fallen into a state of crisis. Questions kept appearing in his mind, but he didn’t have any definitive answers to any of them.

"Tsk, whatever." Reaper’s voice reverberated throughout the space, his complexion growing careless.

"Fine, you destroyed my weapon. But so what? I refuse to believe that the likes of you would be completely alright after destroying my scythe."

"Guess I was right, to think you couldn’t even sense it, let alone dodge it." Reaper continued, his voice started to regain the sense of superiority just like before.

Ye Tian, confused, kept staring at him, ’What is this bitch talking ab—’

Before he could even think of something, his eyes widened as he felt a slight tingling sensation in his left leg.

Ye Tian’s eyes immediately darted downwards, trying to find the cause of this sensation.

But was instead, hit with a realisation. His left leg, from his knee, had been obliterated to shreds in a single move.

The pain was being suppressed by the remnants of Ye Tian’s mana. Knowing very well that he had been exposed, Ye Tian didn’t waste a second and started accumulating as much mana as he could.

"What are you doing?" Reaper’s voice entered Ye Tian’s ears. In an instant, Reaper had closed the distance between them and stood at Ye Tian’s right side without him realising.

Ye Tian’s head sprung towards the voice but he saw no one close to him, except for a piece of fabric that floated around while being attached to his Robes. frёeωebɳovel.com

Ye Tian’s eyes ignored the fabric thinking his dress got torn apart whilst the power struggles. In some distance, he saw the Reaper.

He noticed something familiar... Very familiar in Reaper’s hands...

His eyes started to wobble, his left hand slowly rose and tried to touch his right hand. But all that was left to it was torn-up pieces of his robe that still lingered on him.

"Say, Player Ye Tian, Do you still wanna smile?" Reaper mocked him, as a villainous grin slithered onto his lips.

"This is the difference between a god and a mongrel who’s out of its mind!" The reaper kept going at it.

Why wouldn’t he? After all, it was Ye Tian who first hurt the Reaper’s ego.

Ye Tian understood that survival, in this situation, was next to impossible.

His body was already at the point of breaking. His mana which was supposed to accumulate eternally, was now dissipating as if it had lost its container.

Ye Tian let go of his mana, making his body convulse in immense pain. His breathing grew rugged, his body started to bleed heavily through the wounds.

The Reaper stood confused, looking at him with mixed expression. What Ye Tian was doing right now, was nothing less than a suicide.

But his expression changed as soon as he noticed that his mana wasn’t just simply dissipating, but rather, was concentrating at a single point in his chest.

"Th-This Crazy Bastard!!" He stuttered as he raised his hand towards him.

Ye Tian noticed this, but couldn’t understand why he did that. Since not even a speck of energy was responding to his actions.

’Oh, hollow skies and broken dreams,

Sing with me in silent screams.

A god undone, a soul unchained,

Let all that was being lost in flames.’

Ye Tian thought as his body started to convulse from inside as if some turbulence had entered his body.

’Let rivers weep in molten gold,

Let winds cry tales of fate untold.

If life denies me, death shall rise,

And shroud this world in crimson skies.’

Rays of lights started to appear from whatever little opening they could find. Mouth, eyes, ears, wounds, his body, everything started to illuminate.

’Burn, oh earth, in sorrow’s pyre,

Drown in echoes of my fire.

For if I fall, the stars shall too—

A parting gift, from me to you...’

Ye Tian was prepared. He had regrets, but it’s not like anything could be changed at this moment.

At last, he accepted his fate and closed his eyes. But just before anything could happen, he heard a barely audible whisper. "I’m... Sorry..."

Ye Tian opened his eyes, he seemed to recognise the voice. But as soon as his vision recovered, he saw his world spinning.

It wasn’t for long, but He saw a glimpse before his eyes shut down forever. It was his own body, convulsing, although—headless. And right behind him, stood Ye Zhao.

His sword’s edge was dripping with blood, and a streak of tears flowed out of his eyes.
