Chapter 265: Connection [1]

It was practically fate when Gio let go of the block.

Whoosh!

It was only in motion for around half a second before it came in contact with its first and most important obstruction, but the air still screamed as it passed by.

And then it struck Raven like a speeding train. It exploded against her back and slammed her forward, transforming her into roadkill on its face.

Raven and the energy block crashed into the back wall of the room and broke through it, revealing the room that Gio didn’t choose when Neriah gave him the choice.

He followed the destruction as the block continued to move until it slammed Raven against the opposite wall and broke through again.

She coughed more and more blood as she tried to avoid any bit of damage that she could. The world was against her in that moment. It was as if anything and everything she did was meant to end poorly.

Whooosh!

BANG!

The pressure didn’t stop. Raven was drilled into the back wall until she was thoroughly embedded into it. When he saw it, Gio forcefully controlled the energy in the cube to explode.

And contrary to any expectations, Raven was sent crashing through another wall. The back of the room looked solid and Raven’s group found no hidden tunnels when they investigated, yet she was thrown through a wall bordering on a new area.

Boom!

When the second hidden wall crumbled, the block crumbled with it, leaving Raven inside a storm of virtual energy.

She wasn’t alone there. Gio rushed into the torrent and jumped, using wings on his back to match Raven’s speed and trajectory.

He got above her and grabbed her by the shoulders, forcing her momentum downward.

Bang!

The two of them tussled in the air before Gio finally kicked her to the ground. Raven’s chest was almost completely crushed when she made impact, but she didn’t let herself get injured alone.

In that final second, she did the only thing she could think of and reached out, grabbing Gio the same way he grabbed her.

Her arms wrapped around his waist, and as she bounced off of the hard dirt below...

SHIK!

A pillar of silver energy cut into Gio’s stomach, creating a massive hole in his torso.

It was a wound that needed immediate care if he was anyone else...

’...but I can still ignore this.’

This girl was from VNGRD. She assumed that was enough to give her a more difficult life than anyone else.

She was wrong.

He would show her that she was wrong.

She could fight back, but he was the one who’d win in the end.

[Siege Armament]

BOOM!

Even the creation of the weapons caused damage to the surroundings.

[Burst]

The recoil sent Gio into the ceiling, but the barrage he threw into the ground wasn’t a joke. As virtual bullets and rockets polluted Raven’s world, he summoned a virtual vortex that touched ground and ripped at her with incredibly sharp winds.

She was doing everything she could just to keep the damage away from her skin. Her efforts were unsuccessful, but if she spent even a second on counterattacking, she’d be in much worse shape.

There were burns on her arms and legs. Her clothes had been torn in more than just a few places, and any time her skin was visible, the bloody gashes left with those tears were equally easy to see.

Her energy flow was back, only, it was muddy and not fully recovered. She could tell that she’d need a few hours to return to her usual state.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

The world around her was drowned out in virtual light. The sensations around her disappeared inside the accumulating pain in her veins.

She was being overwhelmed in every way possible.

"YOU...!"

She yelled out in frustration only to become more frustrated when she realized she still didn’t know his name.

Gio wasn’t going to stop for her. He rushed at her again. This wasn’t even close to the level of torment he wanted her to feel.

Raven, battered and bruised, standing with absolute rage and hatred in her eyes, was the sight he wanted to see.

She still looked like she had a will to resist.

She was clearly struggling to stand properly without swaying. Her energy wasn’t responding to her commands properly, surrounding her with an air of sputtering silver light, yet she still summoned it with a fierce expression.

She wasn’t done yet. She wasn’t willing to lose so-

Boom!

A fist landed in her face, slamming her to the ground.

Still, she stood up. She wasn’t going to–

Boom!

Virtual blue energy became her nightmare, burning away the flesh on her body. Whenever she tried to resist...

Boom!

...it returned, reminding her of why resistance was futile.

She couldn’t take it anymore. The sight of the madman on top of her was unbearable. The fact that he was winning made her feel more pain than her wounds ever could.

It wasn’t about the injuries. It was about the humiliation.

VOOM!

Abruptly, Raven’s eyes went hollow. A massive blast of silver energy erupted from her body, catapulting Gio across the room like a ragdoll.

He’d been too caught up in his own storm of negative emotions to realize that there were changes taking place in her.

It was already too late by the time he understood that something was happening.

She raised off the ground like she was possessed by a spirit. No, she really was experiencing something like that. Her body floated into the air surrounded by a platinum-silver aura. Her eyes glowed in the same color and a profound symbol appeared on her forehead.

Gio looked into the halo with a frown, readying himself for another round of combat.

However...

BANG!

He didn’t see it happen. He didn’t know what happened. In one second, he showcased just the slightest bit of hostile intent, and in the next, there was blood spilling out of his mouth as he peeled himself off of a wall.

"What happened here...?"

A mutter came from Raven’s mouth in a voice that wasn’t her own.

"She had the audacity to allow herself to accumulate this many internal injuries? For what...?"

Her eyes panned to Gio.

"Are you the one who caused this?"

He stayed silent. That was enough of an answer in its own right.

"I see, so you’ve become that kind of force to her...perhaps it can be considered a good thing."

The being in Raven’s body nodded as it looked over Gio.

"She’s acting like she’s fine, but you did quite a number on her. I’ll have to pull her from here, which is a bit troubling, but there are others who can do her job. As for you, boy..."

The being grinned, not realizing that the boy it faced already knew its affiliation.

"If you want to meet her again, then come find us in half a year. You’ll find out ’where’ when the time is right."

The location would find him if they wanted it to. He couldn’t stop them.

Gio had no idea how to feel. He stayed still and calm, knowing that the being in Raven’s body could ignore the quest’s suppression.

The blood pooling at his feet was leaving him pale, but he refused to show weakness.

He watched as the being muttered to itself for a bit longer. Then, out of nowhere, it reached out and grabbed the air.

Crack!

A series of hairline cracks spread through the atmosphere around Raven before the world shattered like glass, creating a black hole for her to walk through.

"You did good, boy," the being said with a smile as it stepped into the blackness.

"You’re the first person she’s ever considered a nemesis. That is the greatest blessing I could’ve asked for her to receive, but for you..."

That being’s smile lit up Raven’s face ominously.

"For you, the fact that she sees you as an equal she needs to surpass will probably become one of your worst nightmares."

One more step. The cracked world warped and bent like jelly before filling in the shattered pieces. In mere seconds, there were no more traces of the girl or the being who possessed her body left in the catacombs.

Perhaps their traces had been erased from the Scenario Quest as a whole.

There were only a few things left in their wake to prove that the girl called Raven really was here.

And the majority of those items...

The majority of those items fell in front of the confused and speechless Gio who’d been left in her wake when she disappeared.
