Transcendent Gene-Chapter 313: Savior [7]
BOOM!
The fortress finally gained a bit of security.
Asher sat in the main stronghold with many more energy source volunteers than before. The fortress walls were much stronger, and invasions became much rarer.
On top of that, students from Brennan’s side and even some of the second years who were healed later mounted the walls and started fighting to defend the fort.
There was a real effort on the western island now. It was no longer just Asher trying to save everyone on his own.
"Huu..."
He took a deep breath despite his pale skin and maintained the fortress.
His side was the one that sustained the most casualties, but it wasn’t his fault at all. Rather, most of those deaths were unavoidable and caused by the initial explosions and fall.
The reason why there were more than a few dozen survivors at all in the west was him.
His fortress saved everyone who was providing him with energy. That was enough motivation to keep him pushing.
His left arm was covered in needle marks from when he had to supplement himself, yet even that was not an issue.
The hundreds of corpses around him were the issue.
He wouldn’t let another one appear.
BOOM!
While Asher protected people with walls, Brennan chose a different route.
He also set up "walls," but not in the conventional sense.
The demolition crew he assembled was the star of the show.
Brennan knew he deserved some credit for coordinating them, but his battle strength was only used to protect them.
The reason why the people of the central ruin were surviving in great numbers was the demolition team.
BANG!
A massive elephantine beast stood on its back legs and bellowed, slamming back to the ground.
Its feet were meant to cause shockwaves, but before they could, the ground around it depressed and fell away, dropping both the beast and its handler into the void.
Like a swarm of ants, several young Sequencers came out of the woodworks and started recklessly throwing attacks into the hole until the anguished cries of the beast quieted down.
That scene was one of many.
There were countless traps set up all around. Some of them were meant to impede beasts, while some of them were meant to kill.
The traps created a line that could never be broken. After all, every time the line was broken, Brennan and the remaining frontline fighters would go out and slaughter them.
Everyone thought the number of deaths would only go up with the passing of time, but that wasn’t the case.
Slowly, they were actually managing to regain ground and fight back.
It was always bound to happen even without Gio. At the end of the day, this tragedy didn’t massacre everybody in the institute.
Eventually, people found ways to fight back, and eventually, the teachers escaped and managed to save the rest of the students.
Gio’s interference expedited that rescue and gave them the ability to fight until the time came for it to happen.
He knew that as long as they had the means, there were many students in the academy who were courageous or crazy enough to fight.
"ONWARD!"
At Brennan’s cry, the members of his army roared and rallied their spirits. Whether their end was survival or death, they would fight like their only choice was the latter.
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
Those kinds of impacts didn’t come from one place alone.
The Headmaster raised his staff, creating a great spear the size of a building and throwing it at his enemy.
It was hard to call it a black dragon anymore. Its flesh was filled with aquamarine crystal shards that painted it red and blue.
Its eyes were unfocused, and the handler on its back could no longer get it to follow his orders.
BOOOOOOOM!
Finally, a wall dropped from the sky, slamming the dragon to the ground and cutting it in two and flattening its handler into a stain.
Just like that, the greatest threat in the entire scenario was handled.
But that didn’t mean anything if they couldn’t escape the barrier.
’It’s not an extremely complicated mechanism, but it’s something that can only be cracked by a professional. The issue is that they made using brute force impossible.’
When the barrier was directly attacked, it would consume the energy and use it to enhance its strength.
The power necessary to put into a single point to collapse the barrier with force didn’t exist among the institute’s staff. The Headmaster himself had abilities that worked best for large attacks and couldn’t be concentrated with as much strength.
’That boy said there is someone working on it, however...’
Just as the thought flew past the Headmaster’s mind, his eyes snapped to the distance.
’A disturbance. It’s not an earthquake, but...’
The Headmaster felt it before it happened.
The event itself remained hidden for only a few seconds after his observation. From the beginning, it was always going to show itself to the world.
RUMBLE!
The vibration it caused was felt before the sound, but it wasn’t far behind.
BOOOOOOOOOOOM!
A low rumbling sound like the eruption of a volcano resounded from the distance.
The Apocalypse Church cultists looked over at it.
The students of the First Institute looked over at it.
The beasts being controlled looked over at it.
Reflected in the Headmaster’s eyes was a mushroom cloud of blue energy and black smoke that rose into the clouds and darkened the sky itself
It compounded and exploded several times over, seemingly never reaching its absolute peak. The explosion just kept receiving more energy with every passing second, and it used that energy properly.
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!
The shockwave hit.
It cut across the forest and the clearing, ripping apart anything that still stood in the way before slamming into the barrier around the ruin. The gust of invisible wind was perfectly visible due to its force.
"Hahahaha...!"
The Headmaster laughed heartily and shook his head.
"I guess I still underestimated you, Giovani Atmos."
ROAAAAAAR!
There was silence for several seconds after the explosion started.
The first roar to break that silence came not from a place of hostility, but from one of confusion.
The Headmaster grinned as he watched the smaller beasts around him. They lashed out at anything in their vicinity, attacking not only their handlers but also their fellow beasts.
Crack!
His eyes went to the sky.
"Aha..."
It seemed his own strength wasn’t the only thing Gio was good for. His eyes for talent might’ve even been better than the Headmaster’s.
’I didn’t know there was a student like that at my own academy. That needs to change now.’
He understood the severity of the situation. He knew how many had died, and deep within his casual exterior, there was a burning coldness brewing towards the Apocalypse Church.
Whoosh!
The Headmaster flew into the sky with no concern for the barrier above his head. Just as he reached its precipice, the golden aura shattered into energy dust that melded into the surrounding air.
The barrier around the teachers was gone.
The beast control array was in the midst of an explosion that still hadn’t reached its end.
’The students may have a difficult time dealing with berserk beasts...’
Their behavioral patterns would undergo a significant change now that they weren’t being controlled.
The Headmaster only knew as much about the array as Peter relayed to him, but it was enough.
"HEAR ME!"
His voice spread across the entire ruin like a blanket.
"STAND TOGETHER AND FIGHT! WE ARE ON THE CUSP OF VICTORY!"
He roared and pumped his staff in the sky. Crystalline clouds covered the world, supporting a rain of stars that covered the entire clearing.
All across the island, the teachers and faculty finished their battles with the help of those who charged into the island and their peers.
Together, they followed the Headmaster towards the remaining pieces of the ruin.
With them free, and with the Apocalypse Church’s plan temporarily foiled, nothing would be allowed to claim another innocent life.
It was time to show those cultists what happened to terrorists in this world.
And conveniently enough, the Headmaster was the perfect person to do so.
