Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 146: The Matchmaker’s True Colors
Yi Roujing’s heart cleared up, the sky was cloudless, and those around her could visibly notice it. Ding Ancheng, standing close by, observed this especially when Zhou Zeyuan mentioned knowing Yuan Xiangyu.
So, was Yi Roujing worried about Zhou Zeyuan and Yuan Xiangyu yesterday? That doesn’t make sense.
"Sister-in-law, do you know Xiangyu?" Zhou Zeyuan asked.
"We met over the May Day holiday in the provincial city, got along well, exchanged addresses and phone numbers, and didn’t expect Xiangyu to send us something as soon as she returned home." Yi Roujing replied thoughtfully, "Xiangyu is a lively, genuine girl."
Ding Anmin, standing by, saw the look of a matchmaker on her sister-in-law’s face and couldn’t tell if it was just her imagination.
Afterward, Ding Ancheng hosted Zhou Zeyuan and Xu Jinchun, leading them to the kitchen where the three men busied themselves with the stove.
Yi Roujing followed Ding Anmin to the room, smiling brightly, and they opened the package together.
"Anmin, you’re really nice," Yi Roujing suddenly said to Ding Anmin, surprising her so much that she jumped off the bed.
"Spill it, what’s your agenda?"
Yi Roujing laughed heartily, pulling her back to the bed to sit, embracing her, and snuggling her head on Ding Anmin’s shoulder, "Anmin, you’re really nice."
Ding Anmin blushed, having never seen Yi Roujing act coquettishly like this. She gently patted her back, "You’re not bad yourself."
Xia Xingchen stood by, covering her mouth, giggling.
"Knock knock—" a knocking came from the door outside. Ding Anguo went to open it, "Gu, you’re here. Xia is in the room."
Although Xia Xingchen had returned to the city, Ding Anguo still addressed her as "Xia Zhiqing" as he always did.
Inside, Ding Anmin rolled her eyes, sighed, "Sister-in-law, what do you think we should do about our second brother? I’m worried he won’t find a wife."
Yi Roujing let go of Ding Anmin with a smile. She realized that among the Ding Family siblings, Ding Anguo was the most forthright in speech, particularly within relationships he was certain about.
Ding Anguo had complete faith in Ding Ancheng, never hiding anything from him, especially reporting to him as first priority when something happened.
Just as Ding Anguo knew Gu Shizhao liked Xia Xingchen, and she also had feelings for him, he would always speak frankly when Gu Shizhao came and maintained a proper distance in his address to Xia Xingchen.
But someone with principles like him should be single-minded when in a relationship, right? Yi Roujing thought and commented.
"He’s often set in his ways; I’m afraid he doesn’t even know what liking someone is," Ding Anmin candidly criticized her brother without holding back.
"Anguo just hasn’t met the right girl yet. When he does, he’ll know," Xia Xingchen interjected.
"I hope so," Ding Anmin sincerely said, "Xingchen, why don’t you go invite Gu inside to talk? Avoid that Mr. Zhou. My sister-in-law and I will keep watch at the door for you."
Xia Xingchen’s face turned blushingly pink, feeling a bit flustered.
Ding Anmin opened the door, and Yi Roujing followed with the package in her hands.
"Gu, Xingchen is inside," Ding Anmin said quietly, urging Gu Shizhao.
Gu Shizhao smiled gratefully, entered the room with the door open, and deliberately opened a window, keeping Xia Xingchen’s reputation in mind.
"Anguo, I heard you say Gu Shizhao is here. Where is he?" Zhou Zeyuan approached, carrying a half-peeled winter melon. Reaching the kitchen doorway, he dropped the winter melon at his feet.
"Third Master, I can handle this. Please, take a seat outside and rest," Xu Jinchun picked up the winter melon, persuaded him.
"Old Xu, since Ancheng called me Mr. Zhou, I must express my gratitude. Besides, how often do I get to see the meals he makes himself? It’s a rare chance," Zhou Zeyuan smilingly explained.
"Gu Shizhao, after talking, come help in the kitchen," Zhou Zeyuan called, returning to the kitchen. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Inside, Gu Shizhao didn’t respond to Zhou Zeyuan; instead, he attentively watched Xia Xingchen. Seeing her flushed face, he asked with concern, recalling Zhou Zeyuan’s nature, "Did Zhou Zeyuan say something? Don’t mind him; people in Jing City know him for his sharp and merciless tongue."
"He... he said you really like me," Xia Xingchen mumbled softly, her neck also turning red.
Gu Shizhao laughed, "That’s rare for him to say something right."
Reaching for Xia Xingchen’s hand, wrapping it warmly, Gu Shizhao grinned widely. Xia Xingchen secretly peeked at him; despite the scar on his face, his expression was gentle, causing her to glance a few times more.
"I’m returning to Jing City soon. Stay here comfortably; with Ancheng and his wife around, you can turn to them for anything. Don’t keep things to yourself, or I’ll worry," Gu Shizhao spoke in a soft, warm voice.
"I’ll always keep an eye on the Gu and Xia Families. I’ll make sure to retrieve what’s yours from Gu Yiyi’s hands. Once I’m no longer tied to the Gu Family, I’ll bring you to Jing City, and then you’ll marry me," Gu Shizhao said firmly.
Xia Xingchen dared not look at Gu Shizhao now. They previously talked about considering a relationship, and now it escalated to marriage, although dating’s aim is ultimately marriage.
Gu Shizhao’s palm was sweaty, feeling tense, fearing she’d refuse.
"Xingchen," Gu Shizhao’s tone was slightly pitiful and pleading, "Is that okay?"
Xia Xingchen nodded slightly. Gu Shizhao, attentive, caught this and happily pulled her closer, stealing a quick kiss on her cheek.
"You, you..." Xia Xingchen was too shy to lift her head.
"I’ll come for you soon," Gu Shizhao said with fiery determination in his eyes. He had meticulously planned his steps in Jing City, hoping to bring her back by the end of the year if all went well.
"My family’s matters, no need to rush. Once I’m back, I’ll handle them," Xia Xingchen sweetly asserted, despite her words being fierce. Gu Shizhao felt gratified, thinking leaving her with the Ding Family was a wise choice.
"I’ll head to the kitchen. Today, you’ll taste my cooking," Gu Shizhao ruffled Xia Xingchen’s hair gently, reluctant to let go, then headed to the kitchen.
Yi Roujing began unpacking items from a sack in the yard. Yuan Xiangyu had sent them a small sack full of things.
Jing City’s famous eight-piece pastries, roast duck, autumn pear syrup... mostly food items, plus hair ties, flowers, headbands, and other accessories, all currently fashionable.
"Quite a lot, it seems Xiangyu really likes hair accessories," Zhou Zeyuan remarked, somehow having wandered over, observing the package from Yuan Xiangyu keenly, making mental notes.
