Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Li Family Members

The one speaking loudly in the courtyard is an elderly lady over seventy, wearing a dark gray diagonally-buttoned blouse and matching pants, her hair gray, her face full of wrinkles.

Sitting next to her is an equally dark-skinned, wrinkled old man, smoking a pipe.

Standing behind them are four people, including Li Xipei and Li Xijun, whom they’ve met before, and the other two are likely the brother and sister-in-law of their mother-in-law.

The brother is as skinny as a reed, with a dispirited expression, sagging eyelids, and eyes that roam restlessly; the sister-in-law is black and fat, her face so plump that her eyes are squeezed into slits, her head raised slightly, looking at people with her nostrils. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

None of them looked pleasing, Yi Roujing mused silently.

"Who are you..."

Mrs. Li’s originally sharp and biting words stopped abruptly when she saw Ding Ancheng come in right after; she quickly switched to a broad smile, "Oh my, Ancheng is at home today, good, good, there’s something I wanted to tell you."

"There’s nothing to say between us," Ding Ancheng said plainly, throwing Mrs. Li a cold glance.

Mrs. Li’s body slightly trembled, mostly out of anger, but she still tried to speak kindly, "Ancheng, you’ve been holding a grudge for so long, it’s such a trivial matter."

"We aren’t here for anything major, just hoping you could find a light job at the commune for Xipei and Xijun."

"Our Ancheng’s wife, Anguo, and Anmin are all working. Do you think it’s so easy to find work at the commune? If it were that simple, by just moving lips, would they still be in the brigade?" Li Hongying replied unhurriedly.

"Then get a few more, we’re not asking for official positions, temporary ones are fine too," Mrs. Li insisted without any reluctance.

"Ancheng works in the county; who does he know at the commune? Even if he could, he couldn’t get any, it’d be impressive enough to get Ancheng’s wife a job." Li Hongying replied earnestly.

"Li Hongying, are you out of your mind," Mrs. Li, furious, stood up, pointing her finger at Li Hongying, cursing, "You’re treating others better than your own, haven’t seen you so attentive to your own two, giving the best to outsiders, are you sane?"

"What gives you the right to say that about my mom?" Ding Anmin couldn’t stand it, stepping forward to counter, "My mom treats us all equally, do you get it? She looks after us dearly, we two brothers are doing well, stop stirring trouble."

"Before you criticize my mom, reflect on how you treat your own kids, who are you to judge others, selling your own flesh and blood, who gave you the face?"

Mrs. Li was so angry she swayed, the plump woman quickly supported her onto the stool, continuing, "The ill-mannered girl, if you anger your grandmother into a stroke, are you ready to tend to her?"

"I didn’t anger her, just stated facts, she’s scared about things she’s guilty of." Ding Anmin snorted, "You brought this upon yourselves, why come, you’re cut off anyway."

"Ding Anmin, who gave you the gall," Li Xijun gritted his teeth, "Say another word, I dare you."

Just as Li Xijun finished speaking, Li Xipei pulled him back a step, "Sis, what are you doing..."

Li Xijun belatedly felt eyes boring into him like arrows, lifting his gaze only to meet Ding Ancheng’s slightly fierce eyes, memories of being thrashed by Ancheng resurfaced, his legs turned to jelly, and he slumped to the ground.

"You can leave now." Throughout, Ding Ancheng remained calm, but his words were intimidating, "If you come to provoke again, I’ll deal with him."

Ding Ancheng stared directly at Li Xijun, "I mean what I say."

"If you dare do anything to my grandson, I’ll report you, how can someone like you be a teacher," Mrs. Li said furiously.

Ding Ancheng wasn’t afraid one bit, "I don’t even need to lift a finger, there are plenty who’d love to beat him up."

"You don’t believe me, try it." Ding Ancheng put that out there, then personally opened the big door, "Go back, don’t come again."

"Ding Ancheng, just you wait, do you really think I can’t do anything to you?" Li Xijun’s eyes turned red with anger, fists clenched tightly, suppressing his rage.

"If you trouble others in my family, I’ll hold you accountable," Ding Ancheng looked at Li Xijun, a shadow in his eyes.

"Grandpa, Grandma, let’s just go home," Li Xipei kept tugging at Li Xijun, also pulling him towards the gate.

"Ancheng bro, we’re leaving now, Xijun just talks tough, he won’t actually do anything." Li Xipei looked at Ding Ancheng, eyes full of earnestness, Yi Roujing watching from the side raised an eyebrow.

After pulling him out the door, Li Xipei turned for a glance at Ancheng, then shifted her gaze to Yi Roujing; unexpectedly meeting her eyes, unable to retract the jealousy and hatred in time, but Li Xipei was capable, quickly changing her expression, finally nodding at Yi Roujing.

Beautiful, Yi Roujing didn’t expect Li Xipei to be fond of Ding Ancheng, after all, he’s technically her cousin, it seems worth investigating what Li Xipei did on March 7th, she’s on the suspect list now.

The Li Family came quickly and left just as fast, not delaying Yi Roujing and the others from going to work.

"Big brother is so impressive," Ding Anmin looked at Ding Ancheng, full of admiration.

"Stay away from them if you see them," Li Hongying advised Ding Anmin, Ding Anguo, and Yi Roujing.

"Got it, mom." The three responded obediently.

Li Hongying slightly curled her lips, her eyes filled with maternal love, "Alright, have breakfast quickly and go to work, I’ll make salted meat rice for lunch."

Yi Roujing couldn’t help but swallow, Ding Ancheng chuckled lightly beside her, his expression no longer gloomy.

Hah, even being laughed at, Yi Roujing shot him a glare.

"Ugh, can’t stand the flirting," Ding Anmin rubbed her arms.

Ding Anguo quickly pulled her away, still muttering, "Laughing at big brother, won’t you want delicious food anymore."

Starting today, Yi Roujing’s job is to herd cattle. After arriving at the brigade’s warehouse, she didn’t have to line up for tools but had to wait for Ding Anmin and Xia Xingchen, so once they got their tools, she took the cow straight up the small hill.

"Do you know how to herd cattle at all?" Along the way, Yi Roujing kept changing positions to lead the cow, Ding Anmin couldn’t stand it anymore, finally commenting, and kindly took over the rope.

"It’s my first time," Yi Roujing replied matter-of-factly.

"Never herded, but you must’ve seen it, cows walk slowly, gentle-tempered, but if you keep jumping around them, annoy them, and they butt you, what would you do?"

"Jumping around?" Yi Roujing gave Ding Anmin a casual gaze.

"Sister-in-law, Mr. Qi is coming," Xia Xingchen turned back for a few glances, spotting Mr. Qi strolling over afar.
