Chapter 125: The Harper Citadel Arc [ 7 ]

Vincent cocked his head back.

"Do I need a reason to visit the place where I once used to serve?"

I rolled my eyes.

"Maybe you’d sound more believable if, before coming here, you didn’t blow up a train full of people."

He fell silent for a moment, then placed his flintlock pistol on the table.

"I came here because I needed to. Just like you, I’m on a mission alongside Kai. Now, if you’re going to keep asking me these senseless interrogatory questions, then I’ll be taking my leave."

"I see..."

I guess I won’t be able to get anything out of him.

I subtly glanced at Clementine, and she met my gaze, then winked.

But she could.

"Don’t worry, I’ll stop now."

I stood up and went back to my seat, took a few sips of beer, and then glanced back at Vincent.

"You should eat some food as well. It’s delicious."

"I already ate. Also, what’s the plan beyond just getting inside and searching the underground area? What happens if whatever’s down there is too much for us to handle?"

Vincent narrowed his eyes.

"What if the Arch Priests know we’re coming? What if the rest of the cathedral is already aware of what’s happening? Can the six of us take down 500 Grade 40 Paladins? Can we take down nearly 100 Grade 50 Templars? I don’t think so."

A good plan...

Right.

We’re missing a solid plan.

And seeing our mixed reactions, Vincent’s expression soured, and he picked up his own seat before ultimately sitting down beside us.

Well... beside the Vermillions.

He was as far away from me as possible.

"I’ll come up with a plan," he volunteered and glanced at everyone present.

"Since we don’t have much time, we’ll be doing this tonight. Now then, you Vermillions..."

Vincent began assessing everyone’s strengths and created several scenarios where we could use our strengths, and if needed, Gifts, to run away.

After all, a good plan is a plan where everyone lives.

However, despite him being so thorough with it, I heard something that caught my interest.

’Since we don’t have much time.’

Time for what?

Does he think whatever’s down there would disappear tomorrow?

Obviously not.

He must know what’s down there, and whatever it is, he needs it today.

Was that also what Kai was after?

Just what’s down there?

Our discussion stretched from breakfast all the way to lunch, and only after we covered all the bases did everyone start going their separate ways.

But instead of going along with Maximillian and Jake, Cassie approached Clementine.

"Would you like to accompany me shopping?"

"Shopping?"

Clementine tilted her head.

"With you?"

"Mhm. I know commoners are supposed to wear plain clothes, but I can’t help but want to buy you some dresses. I believe you’d look great in them, even if it’s just to look at yourself in the mirror."

Hearing Cassie’s kind words, Clementine stepped back warily.

"Are you hitting on me...?"

Pfft.

"Evangeline, she’s just being nice. Girls usually go out for girly things like eating, buying clothes... whatever."

"Y-Yeah."

Cassie nodded, then raised a brow.

"Have you never been out with a friend before?"

"No."

"..."

A determined look appeared on Cassie’s face as she placed her hand on Clementine’s shoulder.

"I’m going to wash up first. Let’s meet up in an hour by the cathedral. Don’t be late."

With that, Cassie ran after the other two Vermillions and finally left the inn.

Honestly...

I was happy for her.

She didn’t actually have any friends, so I just hope she could get along with Cassie.

"What was that about...?"

I smiled and approached her before ruffling her hair slightly.

"Let’s do a quick detour, and then I’ll book you an inn with a shower. I don’t want you to miss your outing."

She seemed a little flustered, but nodded anyway.

As for our quick detour... he was still sitting in the same spot as before, sipping on some alcohol and reading a newspaper he picked up from somewhere.

Or that’s how it seemed anyway.

In reality, this was an illusion.

And Clementine saw it too.

I used my Mystic Eyes and locked onto him.

He was several blocks away by now, and he was moving quickly.

Clementine had already begun to move.

As for me, I summoned a single spark of lightning right in front of Vincent, and then teleported to it.

The moment I appeared in front of Vincent, I caught him completely off guard.

I aimed straight for his throat, trying to grab him and detain him.

But he simply lowered his posture and slid under me, using the fragile roof tiles to boost himself until finally coming to a halt only a few meters away from me.

When I turned around, I was met with a flintlock aimed straight at my forehead.

"It’s very bold to use your Gift so out in the open. You realize if even one person reports you, you’ll have to deal with a Holy Knight."

I shrugged.

No one aside from Vincent saw me using my lightning.

If I ever get questioned, I’ll just say I moved really fast.

Anyhow...

"Do you plan on reporting me?"

Vincent cocked his flintlock pistol, ready to fire at any moment.

"That depends on what happens next."

I let out a chuckle.

"I suppose it does, doesn’t it?"

The moment I uttered those words, I saw a pair of translucent silver hands emerge from the roof and wrap around Vincent’s legs.

Then, the hands were no longer transparent as they burst and crumbled the roof around them before ultimately pulling the unaware Vincent down into the home below.

CRUNCH!

CRASH!

I immediately covered the whole block in a Telekinetic barrier, and thankfully I did, because what followed next would have definitely given us away.

BANG!

BOOOOOOM!

A loud gunshot thundered from below, hit the roof, and collapsed it.

As the bullet was about to fly away, I caught it with my Telekinesis before finally storing it inside my dimensional ring.

I fell with the collapsed roof and cushioned my fall on someone’s comfortable bed.

Yet as I glanced ahead, I spotted a fully diamond Clementine holding a bent flintlock pistol in one hand, and the struggling Vincent in the other.

She tossed the pistol into her dimensional ring, then turned to me.

I nodded at her, and she nodded back.

Then, without wasting a single moment, she locked eyes with Vincent.

His eyes turned cloudy, and his body soon fell limp.

He was still conscious, but he was under Clementine’s Charm Gift.

She propped up Vincent against the wall, turned off her Diamond Skin, and then approached me.

"He’s ready... Try asking him something."
