Chapter 132: The Harper Citadel Arc [ 14 ]

Turning into lightning, I ducked under the bullet and dashed forward, blasting the door into bits, cracking the tiles of the hallway, and causing each and every one of the ancient chandeliers to shake as I dashed toward the enemy.

I barely even registered the fact that the hallway was littered with hundreds of heart-less corpses and slash markings from all sorts of demons.

But despite all that chaos and death... it only took me a fraction of a second to arrive in front of the person who shot the bullet at me, and it wasn’t anyone I recognized.

It wasn’t a demon, but instead, it was one of the Grade 50 Templars.

One of the people who were supposed to be protecting this cathedral and the rest of the Harper Citadel from whatever’s happening.

And yet...

That person is now attacking me?

Instead of killing him outright, I reappeared behind the templar.

Since the templar wore leather armor, he turned around in an instant, aimed his flintlock pistol at my head, and pulled the trigger.

Or tried to, anyway.

But in that split second, I increased the weight of his flintlock pistol to several tons, crushing not only the bullet inside, but also the flintlock itself.

As the crumbled pieces of the flintlock fell to the floor, the templar raised his hand and sent a sharp gust of wind my way, attempting to cut me in half.

But I simply enhanced my durability by 45 times and straight up blocked his attack without wasting my energy.

Then, I narrowed my eyes and clutched his heart with my Telekinesis, causing him to momentarily halt as he sensed the danger.

Noticing that the situation was under control, I addressed the elephant in the room.

"Do you have brain damage, or are your eyes just for show? We’re both humans."

I glanced to my right, where a section of the cathedral was destroyed.

Beyond it, I saw the ruins of the Harper Citadel as the streets were littered with even more corpses than what caught my eyes a few moments ago.

The corpses were both on the streets and the roofs of the buildings, staining everything red and reminding me of what I saw back when Clementine and I crossed paths with the Vampire Nobles.

No one was spared then, and definitely not now.

But despite the chaos, I also saw several people fighting back against the demons and nearly succeeding before being brutally killed like the rest.

It’s just...

All of the demons here were humans not that long ago.

Frowning in disgust, I turned back to the templar, only to see a wind blade frozen by my Telekinetic barriers only a few inches away from my left eye.

"..."

"Templar, speak up already."

Seeing me dissipate his wind Gift effortlessly, he narrowed his eyes at me, and despite my Telekinesis, he managed to squeeze out a few clear words.

"You’re responsible for all of this... You’re going to die."

Huh.

"I’m responsible for what exactly?"

"The former Holy Order captain informed us earlier that you and that woman were after the Arch Priests’ lives. The former captain also mentioned that you are harboring demons and have been the people we’ve been searching for."

His expression turned hateful.

"You... How could you do something like this? Killing so many innocent people..."

"You make me sick."

Hearing all of that, the final piece of the puzzle clicked into place.

I should’ve known.

Kai’s main objective was to set us up as the scapegoats.

Damn it.

"Would you believe me if I told you Vincent lied to you?"

Noticing the templar’s glare, I knew our reputation in the Harper Citadel was unsalvageable.

If the templars knew, then the paladins knew.

And if the paladins knew, then so did the remaining priests, scouts, and every other person in the city, including those who managed to escape.

Before long, the Holy Order will hear about it.

Mikael and Evangeline...

We’ll be the most wanted people in the world.

Glancing past the templar, I met Clementine’s gaze.

She was standing right behind him, ready to crush his head at any moment.

"Evangeline, charm him."

At my words, she nodded and stepped in front of the templar, then even with his resistance, he couldn’t avoid being charmed.

Unlike Vincent, he couldn’t resist, so his eyes turned cloudy.

"Why is he so weak?"

She turned to me, puzzled.

"Isn’t he supposed to be a Grade 50?"

A faint smile appeared on my face.

"How do you think the church has so many Grade 40’s and 50’s? Since they have so many resources, they pour nearly everything into alchemy and mass-produce stat-increasing potions and pills."

"In short, these people get forcefully pushed to such a high Grade. Since most man-made potions and pills have side effects, these mass-produced soldiers can never go above Grade 40 or 50, and even if their Grade is high, their actual strength is around 70% of a Grade 50."

That would make them around Grade 40.

While it wasn’t that bad... most of these people only had basic combat training, no actual combat experience, and Gifts that were at most Advanced rank.

Especially for a young templar such as this.

Clementine hummed in interest.

"What about Vincent?"

"He’s legit. He was a soldier during an era where alchemy was frowned upon, so there weren’t that many mass-produced soldiers like now."

Since it looked like I satiated her interest, I stepped up and glanced straight into the templar’s eyes.

"Gather the other templars and tell them the Arch Priests have died. But before their death, they told you that more demons are coming from south of the citadel, and if you don’t move now, they will kill everyone."

The templar’s eyes sparkled for a moment.

Then, like a robot, he limped away.

His limp soon turned into a sprint, and before long, he covered his feet in wind and flew to meet the other templars.

...If they’re all against us, then they’re better off not being here in the first place.

"Let’s check out Fivien’s room again."

With those words, I turned into lightning and reappeared inside his room.

Then, I searched for Vincent’s energy trace, finding it only a few seconds later.

I half expected him to be gone from the citadel by now, but to my surprise, alongside the Vermillions, he was on the top floor of the cathedral.

But they weren’t the only four people there, as the six assassins and even Kai were present.

Kai released a little bit of his energy, as if sensing me.

Unlike the previous times, my Mystic Eyes weren’t cancelled, and upon seeing that, a faint smile appeared on Kai’s face as he stared directly into my eyes.

He raised his hand and gestured at me to approach.

And before I could even react, he sent a powerful burst of energy that immediately turned off my Mystic Eyes.

Once my vision returned, I saw a few blood droplets, but I ignored them and glanced at a stairwell in the distance leading up.

"..."

It seems like it’s finally time to confront Kai.
