Chapter 181: Sun Purification Ritual [ 4 ]

Once a minute had passed since the start of the ritual, I finally began feeling some heat.

For the first couple of minutes, it didn’t feel too bad. At most, my skin charred slightly.

But after nearly 10 minutes of this, I began to feel something odd.

The heat vanished, and what replaced it was the sensation of my consciousness slowly leaving my body.

I tried to resist it at first, but every passing moment made it much more difficult, until eventually, I felt like I was no longer in my body.

My thoughts were only confirmed when I opened my eyes and realized I was standing in the center of a giant marble temple. It was a few times bigger than the one at the top of the Sun Vampire staircase.

More importantly, I couldn’t see the sky outside the temple. There was only pitch-black darkness.

Or that was how it seemed at first. When I began approaching the darkness, I saw a single ray of light shining through.

It looked innocent. Hell, it even looked comforting. So much so that I felt like I couldn’t help myself, so I approached it.

Yet the moment the ray of light hit my skin, a powerful jolt ran through my entire body, causing it to stiffen. What followed was scorching pain, almost like my neck was being clawed by hundreds of tiny claws.

Falling to my knees, I rolled away from the light, and once it was no longer on my body, the pain vanished.

Yet as I glanced down and saw my haggard appearance reflected in the marble tiles, I couldn’t help but groan and then stand up.

That was too close.

Had I stood there for longer, I might have actually just burned to death.

Shaking my head in unease, I was about to go back. But just then, I spotted that the darkness had moved a single inch closer to me from all sides.

Not only that...

[Ding!]

[You have triggered an emergency quest!]

[Objective: Pass the Sun Purification Ritual.][Reward if you hold on for 60 minutes: +50 Free Stat Points + Enhanced Energy Reserves + Enhanced Energy]

[Additional reward if you hold on for 24 hours: +50 Free Stat Points + ★ Sun Resistance (Lv.1) + Blessed Armor Set.]

Staring at the pop-ups, I couldn’t help but smile.

It’s been a while since I last got something like this, and now, to see such good bonuses. Though, the additional reward was a bit hard to get.

But extra stats, a special ability, and even a Blessed Armor Set are hard to pass up.

So I’ll try my best.

I glanced around and realized that every minute or so, the darkness moved a little bit closer toward the center.

That meant that so long as I just stayed in the very middle, I’d eventually be able to pass this whole thing without any trouble.

Though...

CLICK.

CLICK.

CLICK.

I kept hearing the sound of heels clicking on the ground.

At first, I thought it was nothing, but when I focused with my Mystic Eyes, I quickly realized that there was something moving beyond the darkness.

And since the first time I heard the clicking, it had gotten closer.

"..."

For now, I’ll just go to the center and relax. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

As it so happened, the marble floor in the very center formed a circle, so that’s exactly where I sat down, crossed my legs, and took a deep breath in anticipation.

Half an hour passed quickly.

As did the next half hour, and the next...

If I wanted to just get out now, I could.

But since I had close to 22 hours left, I knew I couldn’t.

Yet the moment I was about to close my eyes and continue to wait for the time to pass, I suddenly heard an overly loud click behind me.

CLIIIIICK!

I kicked off the ground. My body soared through the air for a moment, until I eventually caught myself with Telekinesis and glanced back down.

To my surprise, despite feeling someone behind me, there was no one there.

No one except the faint trace of energy, which I quickly followed. For a moment, I thought I was wrong as the energy led me outside the darkness.

And yet, I soon spotted the energy move again and reappear above me, then behind me.

Before long, I could see myself through someone else’s eyes.

I felt like my heart had dropped all the way down to my stomach, since I wasn’t a very big fan of horror. But thankfully, I wasn’t weak anymore.

In an instant, I spread out my Telekinesis and covered the whole area leading up to the darkness, creating a barrier that wouldn’t let anyone escape. As it so happened, I felt someone hit my barrier from inside, and once I finally turned in that direction, I froze.

Banging against my barrier was a floating, transparent light green woman. She had no legs, but she wore a dress. Her eyes were hollow, and her mouth was constantly open, revealing something more like a maw.

It was a wraith.

Despite it only being Grade 30, it was a very dangerous demonic monster that attacked only the soul, sucked it dry, and left the person dead. If they were unlucky, the wraith would eat them and birth another wraith.

Since I didn’t want my soul sucked or my body eaten, I quickly focused and tried to unsheathe my katana. Only then did I realize I had left my katana in my dimensional ring. As it so happened, my dimensional ring wasn’t on my finger right now.

But my weapon aside... thankfully, I knew how to deal with wraiths.

And it was really damn simple.

They were like balloons.

If there was too much energy in their spirit-like bodies, then they’d explode.

There was a very small chance they’d mutate into a wraith king when getting a bunch of energy, but I don’t think I’m that unlucky.

The moment I had that thought, I froze.

These wraiths didn’t have any feet.

So where did the clicking sound come from?

Definitely not their mouths.

Not their hands either...

Oh boy.

I really am surrounded by a couple dozen demonic monsters, aren’t I?
