Chapter 116: 116 Lightning Flash (Modified.)

With the alarm blaring incessantly, the atmosphere in the room where Cain stood changed drastically—thick and heavy with tension. Cain turned to the side, seeing a monitor glowing red as the person sitting in front of it shouted.

"The west wall is destroyed! Multiple virus beast signals detected—they’re crawling into the camp!"

Hearing the news, the man standing before Cain froze, his face blank, but it soon twisted into frustration.

"They got us! Tell the nearest soldiers to... Hey, Cain! Where do you think you’re going?"

Without waiting for the man to finish his command, Cain pushed aside the tent curtain and forced his way out.

The moment he emerged, several seniors and his teammates glanced toward him. Rika shortened the distance between them; from behind her visor, Cain could see the girl’s hardened expression.

She stood before him and asked.

"What happened?"

Just as he was about to open his mouth, a loud explosion echoed through the area, and smoke billowed into the atmosphere.

’That way?’

Cain narrowed his eyes and tightened his grip on his katana before shouting to his comrades.

"Follow me!"

He ran, dashing like a fired bullet. Without needing further details, his four teammates followed right behind him. In their eyes, there was only one goal: to follow their leader’s back, without exception.

Mass panic ensued. People ran while screaming, colliding with one another, turning the once-quiet camp into utter chaos.

Cain seamlessly navigated through the crowds, his feet becoming a blur as he moved toward the west side with his comrades trailing behind.

Soon, he saw the towering wall, the pure glint of its silver steel caught his eye. But in one section, the wall was gapped; there were slash wounds from something sharp and hot, visible in the lingering orange glow on the edges.

From that hole, several common-rank virus beasts emerged and began spreading terror among those who were late to evacuate.

Cain saw a woman being chased by a virus beast; she fell after colliding with another person. As a result, the monsters closed in, extending their cable-like tentacles.

"Rika!"

The grey-haired boy shouted, his hand pulling the pistol from his right thigh and aiming the muzzle at the monster.

He pulled the trigger, and a sharp jolt to his shoulders, released a bullet that flew straight and struck the virus beast’s body, staggering its movement for a moment. But a moment was more than enough for the team’s sniper to act.

A loud ’bang’ echoed in his ears, coming from Rika’s new rifle, which had a long and twisting chamber, a larger bullet that had armor-piercing capabilities.

With a single shot from Rika’s rifle, two to three common-rank virus beasts were instantly destroyed as the bullets pierced their cores in a flash.

Though some monsters fell, the attack wasn’t over. Several tentacles began to emerge from behind the chunks of destroyed steel.

The cables writhed in the air, ready to snatch their prey. Cain locked his gun forward and, with multiple shots, managed to destroy the tentacles before they could reach the paralyzed woman.

"Abel, Louise, go! Peter, protect Rika."

With his command, the four moved in sync. Cain stopped running and pointed his muzzle forward, ready to assist his friends.

Beside him, two shadows dashed into a blur, tightening their grips on their weapons. On the other side, Rika dropped to her stomach with her rifle ready, accompanied by Peter.

The battle commenced. Abel entered the battlefield, surrounded by virus beasts. The blonde boy began swinging his sword. His movements were fluid, as if he carried no weight.

With every swing, the blade whistled, which sent out small shockwaves that severed tentacles and split the monsters’ bodies, leaving chunks and black blood scattered everywhere.

Not wanting to be outdone, Louise brandished her spear. With one sharp thrust, she blasted a monster’s body to bits, leaving a massive hole.

Each of her movements was refined to the finest detail. No wasted movement in her footwork, and her single, simple stab delivered a deadly blow toward her enemy.

Rika occasionally fired shots to help the front-line fighters, covering their blind spots. Meanwhile, Cain stood back and surveyed the surrounding area, wary of any suspicious movement from the monster.

Thanks to their quick actions, the woman who had fallen into a state of fear was able to stand and flee the battlefield.

"Leader, there’s one big monster."

Peter’s voice from behind made Cain flinch. He peeked over his shoulder, watching the blue-haired boy standing still, but for Cain, who already knew Peter’s detection abilities, he couldn’t ignore the warning.

"Where is it?"

Cain asked, then shifted his attention back to the battlefield. Silence fell for a few seconds before Peter’s solemn voice entered his ears.

"It’s coming close to the wall!"

Hearing Peter’s warning, Cain holstered his pistol and tightened his grip on the katana at his left waist.

With a single stomp, his body turned into a shadow, leaving afterimages as he reached the battlefield in a single breath. The grey-haired boy narrowed his eyes, seeing Abel and Louise handling dozens of common-rank monsters with ease.

’I’ll leave this place to you, guys.’

Cain ran through the crowd of virus beasts and arrived near the hole that had been cleaved by something—something left by the strongest and largest monster of the group.

Through the hole, he saw the silhouette of a monster with sharp, pointed legs. With his speed, Cain ran through the hole in the wall, stepping out into the world beyond.

Dry, blackish-red earth stretched as far as the eye could see, but he had no time to admire the scenery. The boy shifted his run to the right, before stopping a dozen meters from the monster and swallowing hard to moisten his parched throat.

"So you’re the culprit!?"

The virus beast was over five meters tall. It had an oblong body, supported by six pairs of thin, pointy legs and two large arms shaped like scythes with glowing, sharp edges.

"Hm!?"

The moment he spoke, the monster turned toward him. Its red eyes were clearly visible on the front of its oblong body, glowing ominously. In an instant, the monster raised its scythe-arms, causing Cain to raise an eyebrow.

’Why? It’s obvious—I’m well out of his arm’s reach.’

The orange color of the monster’s scythes emitted a heat energy that sent chills down Cain’s spine. The boy’s eyes widened, his left hand gripping his katana tightly.

’Long range!?’

The monster swung its scythe, sending a flying slash directed straight at Cain. The grey-haired boy leaped to the side, narrowly avoiding an attack that nearly evaporated him. As the slash passed his body, Cain accidentally inhaled the hot, dry air.

’It’s pretty lethal.’

A screeching sound from the monster drew Cain’s attention back to it. The boy placed his thumb on the tsuba (handguard).

Cain took a deep breath. With a flash of his will, his heart pounded, awakening the slumbering Ether energy. He funneled that power into his hand and then into his katana.

"It’s time."

He drew his katana in a single breath; the black blade shimmered under the dim world. Looking closely, there was a thin layer of Ether coating the edge, crackling like tiny serpents.

Annoyed at being ignored, the monster let out a shrill scream that grated on Cain’s ears. Its thin legs began to move, crawling like an insect.

Seeing the sight, Cain’s expression twisted in horror as he recalled an insect that had been a nightmare for humanity in his old world.

’What was its name again? I don’t remember.’

He wanted to dig through his fragmented memories later, but right now, he had to focus.

The boy raised his blade over his head, inhaling deeply. Then, as the metal bug arrived several meters in front of him, Cain swung his katana downward, sending a black slash that traveled in a straight path, cleaving the enemy’s enormous body in two.
