Chapter 21: Chapter 21:Temptation [2]

As my eyes rapidly opened and closed, barely holding onto consciousness, a figure suddenly entered my sight for a split second before my eyes closed.

The person had a short-sleeved shirt on with tattoos tattered across their arms, and their skin was painted a crimson-red.

With no hair and two horns, much smaller than even my broken right horn, sticking out of his head, the figure stared at me with an eager expression, as if anticipating a large meal.

It was a familiar figure.

Not from the bounty board...but from the inside of the adventurer's guild.

Early this morning, when I had been paranoidly glancing all around the bar, I had seen someone with the exact same features.

Except...their skin was tanned.

At that moment, I suddenly recalled the poster of Kratos that I had seen on the bounty board.

Although the image on that poster did match with the person in front of me, another detail suddenly appeared in my mind.

"Status: Djinn"

Could I smell djinns?

No, I couldn't.

The djinn in front of me gave off no odor, and if I were closing my eyes, I wouldn't even be able to tell he was in front of me.

That horrid smell I had sensed earlier...it could have belonged to any human who had coincidentally been in the forest with me.

Ironically, as my vision darkened and my head pounded with pain, everything seemed to click.

Kratos...he hadn't been staying in the forest...no, he had been within the adventurer's guild this entire time, scouting out potential targets with a new appearance.

In the book, he had found only one target...the protagonist, but in this world, he had found two.

That was why the location of the troll fight had changed.

He had sent the troll to take out the protagonist, while personally coming to me himself.

Not only that, but Kratos seemed to have figured out that I had the ability to smell things.

Well...to be fair, I wasn't exactly hiding it.

When I had been talking with Liana, I had occasionally pinched my nose or covered it with a tissue.

But...because of that, he had set up the large pot of stew near the protagonist's carriage as a way to lure me out.

With my head spinning and eyesight blurred, I bounced off the branch and continued falling toward the ground.

Forcing my eyes open, I immediately clicked the top of my pen, causing a blood-red blade suddenly appear and surge downward from it.

As the sword fully transformed, I immediately stabbed the blade backward, feeling my sword embed in the wood of the tree behind me.

Now falling at a slower speed, I pushed my sword deeper and deeper into the wood, leaving a long vertical gash in the tree trunk, until I finally came to a halt.

With my sword horizontal above me, I held onto the hilt with my left hand while my body hung in the air, a few hundred feet from the ground.

*RUMBLE*

At that moment, the entire tree began shaking, swaying from left to right, and a suddenly bright-red light flashed above me.

Placing my right hand on the hilt of the sword, I internally sent an order to my remaining clones, but there was no response.

Kicking my legs ahead, I flung myself forward into the air and then fell backward, gathering momentum as if I were on a swing.

Swinging forward one last time, I released my grip on my sword, flew forward and up, did a front-flip in the air, and landed with my feet on the hilt of my sword.

As I glanced upward and balanced on the small sword hilt, a figure with a long battle axe slung over his shoulder suddenly came into sight

Standing at the very top of the tree where my sword was embedded, Kratos stared down at me with a menacing expression.

Then, without skipping a beat, he swung his axe at the air below him, sending three massive blood-red magical axe-slashes at me.

Although they weren't as powerful as magical sword-slashes, axe-slashes were bigger, so it was almost impossible for me to dodge them.

They were also curved, like boomerangs, so simply stepping to the right on my hilt wasn't an option.

Thus, I was left with two choices.

Either stay atop my sword and die to the axe-slashes or jump off the tree and attempt to land on the forest floor.

A second later, about fifteen different versions of "me" appeared.

Each of them was also standing atop the hilt of their blood-red blade, which was also embedded in the tree.

As the magical axe slashes hurled at me, all my clones simultaneously jumped up in the air like suicide soldiers, blocking the axe slashes from reaching me.

Body-shields.

Without skipping a beat, I instantly kicked my embedded horizontal blade forward through the tree trunk, cutting right through it.

The tree trunk had already been chopped in half when the first magical axe slash shattered the first of my fifteen clones.

The top portion of the tree instantly fell to the side, catching the beseker off guard and sending him flying toward the ground.

However, I also fell straight down as my sword was no longer holding my feet up.

As I fell through the air, countless more clones appeared beside me, but with them also came a sharp pang to my head that threatened to knock me unconscious.

Above me, the magical axe slashes came to a halt after shattering the last of my above fifteen clones.

My clones were made completely of mana, and, unlike normal attacks, so were the magical axe slashes.

Thus, when the magical axe slashes met my clones, their manas fought, slowing or destroying each other.

At that exact moment, like a comet crashing into the Earth, the heavy berserker hit the ground head-first, causing a massive crater to appear in the forest floor.

Placing one hand on my hood to make sure my horns were covered, I angled my body upward before planting two of my feet on the chopped tree and sliding down it.

The tree was tilted to the right from my cutting it in half, so I simply slid down its slanted trunk like a slide until I reached the forest floor.

By the time I had reached the ground, the cloud of dust covering the crater had disappeared, revealing the berserker's dirty figure.
