Chapter 451 - Only a loving couple would have a warm home like this. (2)
A big smile appeared on Shu LI when she heard that. She had been here for over 6 months and had met a lot of people. Many felt sympathetic after learning about her situation and some told her to get remarried while she was still young. Some even said that she should get remarried for the sake of her children; that it was always better for children to have a father.
Recalling her first marriage. A father like him was better to go without. And that was their own father at that. Would a stepfather be better than a real father? How many Feng Zeyu’s are out there? Besides, Shu Li herself had suffered a lot in her marriage. She now made the calls at home. She did not have a horrible mother-in-law who was always picking on her; nor was there a man who needed her to wait on. Her two children were docile, and she made good money. She did not want to be dragged down by another marriage.
“Yanyan, to tell you the truth, I don’t want to get married again. With my current situation, I won’t be able to find someone nice. And if it's someone mediocre? He might not even make as much as I do. Then I’ll have to be respectful to the elderlies and take care of the man. For sure I will still have to take care of my two children, and I might have to help out his family financially. What for? Why do I want to find myself parents to take care of? What’s that with someone helping me out? Most likely I’d be taking on more for myself.” Shu Li shook her head. “It’s all silly. It isn’t like I can’t live without a man. I am fine that way things are right now. Once the children are grown up and I’ve saved up some money, I will have a house built in the suburbs and, just like you, find a domestic help to take care of me……”
Shu Yan didn’t think that Shu Li would have it all figured out already. This was another woman that was wasted by the Shu family. Had she been allowed to go to school, she wouldn’t have flared half bad.
“What do you want to have for lunch? I will make it for you,” asked Shu Li, sweeping the floor clean and taking a look at the time.
“Anything will do. I have quite the appetite lately,” said Shu Yan with a smile.
“Glad to hear. It’s always good when one has an appetite.” Shu Li rinsed the vegetables and started on lunch with alacrity and made three dishes and a soup in no time. They were all local City Xi cuisines. Shu Yan drooled when she saw them.
“Second Sister, I missed our hometown cuisine lately, but I can’t stand the grease in the kitchen, so I didn’t make them. I can finally have some now.” Shu Yan had one of the fried doughs. Yep, that was the taste. It was too delicious.
“Why didn’t you come over sooner then? You should tell me if you crave them.” Shu Li glared at her. “Why are you so polite with me?”
“No, I didn’t really crave it that much. Just a little bit.” Shu Yan had a second one. What she didn’t say was that it wasn’t City Xi’s cuisine that she missed. She missed her own mother’s cooking. Her Second Sister’s cooking was very similar to her mother’s cooking. That was why the smell made Shu Yan crave them.
Shu Yan’s eyes reddened as she ate. She missed her mother.
“What happened?” Shu Li was startled. Why was Shu Yan crying from the food?
“Nothing. I just remembered our childhood days.” Shu Yan randomly came up with some excuses.
Shu Li didn’t know better and thought that Shu Yan truly thought about their childhood. She lamented. “The days were so hard when we were little. We could only have fried doughs over New Year and, even so, they were mostly for the three boys. One time I saw you drooling over them, so I hid two to give to you at night. You insisted that I have one too. I still remember the taste of that fried dough to this day.”
Shu Yan went through her memories and, sure enough, that was one of the last memories for the original owner as well. “I remember that too. It was already cold but that taste? I thought it was the most delicious thing in the world back then.”
“You can have as many as you want now. Have some more.” Seeing that Shu Yan’s eyes were red, Shu Li quickly changed the subject. “Just let me know what you want to eat next time. You can come over, or I can go over to your place. We don’t live that far apart from each other.”
Their memories were not of the same thing, but Shu Yan couldn’t share that with anyone, not even Feng Zeyu. She smiled, nodded, and did not carry on with that subject.
