Chapter 79: Elias, please stop laughing

Sienna lay stiffly on her side, staring at the shadows on the wall which were created by the wind and light from the lantern. Beside her, Elias was laughing. Not a soft chuckle or soft faint sounds one made occasionally when they were dreaming. His laughter was a full-bodied, unrestrained sound that shook the bed and made it impossible for her to sleep.

It had started after dinner, when she mentioned that her aunt Numia wanted her mother to make them arrange an engagement for her son. She had expected a rebuke, a dismissive wave of his hand or maybe even a suggestion that they toss her aunt into the sea so that she could wake up from her dreams.

Instead, he had burst into laughter, and four hours later, he was still at it.

Sienna squeezed her eyes shut, willing herself to sleep through the sound.

HAHAHA.....Elias wheezed.

She groaned inside. Every time his laughter subsided into silence, it renewed with renewed vigor, punctuated by a poke on her shoulder and the question: can you believe her?

"Imagine," he gasped between chuckles, "a falcon beast man married to a lioness. She would swallow him in one gulp if he took on his full beast form in bed, accidentally."

Sienna groaned and yanked the pillow from beneath her head. With a swift, furious motion, she smashed it against his face. He didn’t even slap it away, he just continued to laugh. The muffled sound grew louder, echoing like a drumbeat in Sienna’s ears.

"Stop laughing!" she hissed. "You’ve laughed for a thousand lifetimes. This is not what I was aiming for when I asked you to laugh more often."

He pulled the pillow away, his eyes gleaming with mirth. "Sienna, this is the most hilarious thing I have ever heard in my life. Your aunt seems to forget that the Rocland’s are not welcome in their tribe. The king would slap her son to death for daring to marry into his family with such a history. As for my family, it’s never going to happen. Your aunt is truly funny in her ambition."

Sienna sat up, her hair tumbling over her shoulders "Yes, it is funny, But you are tormenting me with your laughter."

He rolled onto his back, still laughing. "Torment? No, no. This is comedy. An expelled falcon son-in-law from an unknown family with zero accomplishments to his name! The lion tribe would roar him out of existence before the vows were spoken. Intermarriages between beast men of different species happens, but everyone cares about which beast men specifically.

A sheep beast man cannot marry a lion beast woman just as a fox beast man cannot marry a mouse beast woman. Besides, falcons are too proud and sharp-eyed. They would accuse your cousin of spying on royal secrets in a heartbeat."

She crossed her arms, glaring down at him. "And yet none of those reasons will stop Numia. Sooner or later, she will grow the guts to bring it up to me or you. It is like she thinks her son deserves a place in the great families."

"Deserves?" He laughed harder, clutching his stomach as he turned over and looked into her eyes. "Sienna, he is a falcon beast man. They are proud creatures which soar alone. Lions rule in prides and us foxes, we scheme in shadows. How would he fit in?"

She smacked his arm with the pillow. "You have bird beast men in your vanguard. I am sure they fit in with others quite well."

"Most prefer to be away from others, perched in trees or soaring the sky when not on duty." He replied. "Let’s not forget the struggles of a royal family. They would ruin him and leave him featherless."

She rolled her eyes. "According to Shalin, Numia rushed over to meet Princess Evira. A guard saw her skulking away when the princess left abruptly. I guess she has chosen her royal target."

Elias’s laughter regained strength. "That kid would be eviscerated by Evira in two seconds."

"You’re cruel." She huffed. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

"Cruel?" He grinned, his sharp teeth flashing. "No, Sienna. I am entertained. And you--you are the cause. You delivered this gift to me."

She flopped back onto the bed, covering her ears. But his voice seeped through.

Elias shook her, "don’t sleep, we still have to discuss this further. What do you plan to do about it? It is one thing for your aunt to think about it and another to attempt to achieve it."

Sienna yawned. "Do I have to think about it now?"

He nodded. "Yes! I am thinking about it. I am thinking about the wedding, specifically when the bride and groom are required to be in full beast form to form a soul bond. One golden lion roaring valiantly and one falcon trying not to peck the guests."

Sienna couldn’t help it--despite her irritation, a laugh escaped her lips. She quickly smothered it, but he caught it, his eyes lighting up.

"Aha! See, you find it funny too!" he declared triumphantly. "It is absurd." He leaned closer, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Do you think your falcon cousin would demand for a nest instead of a bridal chamber?"

Sienna groaned.

Elias gasped. "They would be the first falcon and lion beast man couple in our world. Would we see a lion laying eggs for the first time in history?"

Sienna shoved him away, but her laughter bubbled up again. "Stop it, or I will exile you from this bed."

He clutched his chest dramatically. "Exile me? My room is now Ali’s room. Where would you send me to? And even in exile, I would still laugh that absurdity."

She noticed that he had focused more on the lion side, not foxes. It was probably because he was imagining the grim face of the king if something like that happened. Was it possible that there was another reason? Elias Veythar, laughing like a boy was not on her bingo card for a lifetime.

In a soft voice, she asked, "Why does this amuse you so much?"

He paused, his laughter subsiding into a smile. "Because it is so stupid. It is the most stupid thing I have ever heard in my life. It reminds me that even in our world of power and politics, folly still exists. Your aunt’s ambition is a feather trying to weigh as much as a crown. It cannot be done. And yet, she dreams it. Tell me, how does that amuse you?"
