Transmigrating from a zombie world to become the mecha kings wife-Chapter 647: The underworld pulse.
Chapter 647: The underworld pulse.
Her private wing was unusually silent when Scarlet finally found her way to it after maneuvering through a lot of goodbyes and departing from reluctant family members. Justin would be spending the night with Gregor and other young relatives from the Wu side of the family. It left Scarlet alone with Severus.
Both hound and reaper were silent, mulling over independent thoughts which filled their minds and one that they both didn’t want to touch, Esong.
Scarlet took a bath and gave the unwilling Severus one as well. Then, she changed into her black reaper outfit and sat down on the bed. She took out her stuffed soul gourd which was filled with souls that she collected from the temple and sighed.
When she looked at it, it hit her then that everything had changed and yet it was almost as if nothing had changed at all. She was powerful but she was still doing the same thing. After life travelling and fighting, this sort of felt too easy or boring.
She sighed, a sigh depicting her boredom and she said, "Aaah, I guess it’s back to the same old routine now, right? This must be why people use that line, same old-same old."
Severus was inclined to agree with her. The old routine of collect souls day in day out was rather dull however she had been longing for home for a while. Why then did it seem as if she was not happy to be back? "I thought you would be excited to be back. Aren’t you?"
"It’s not that." She raised her hands, gesturing around to drive her explanation in. "I am happy to be back but it just seems, so quiet, empty, shallow even."
Severus looked around the large silent bedroom and his ears twitched as he listened to any sounds being emitted from outside of it. It was quiet indeed, not even the cats, dogs, birds or other house pets were making a ruckus. It did feel rather abnormal and off. Where were the spiritual animals?
"What happened here?" he asked himself, loudly. "It’s like everything is gone." ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
"Deities, or deity. The old deity must have taken them all for questioning or something." She replied.
It was the only logical explanation she could come up with. She did intend to get all of her spiritual animals back. Without them and the noise from the televisions, it was awfully silent__, disconcertingly so.
"Come on, let’s go." She grabbed the soul gourd and they both teleported away, going to the underworld within the blink of an eye.
The words same old-same old, could not be used in the underworld. The entire place had changed, and not for the better. It reminded Scarlet of a beautiful house that had been torn down or left unoccupied for too long that it started to grow weeds and fall apart.
Immediately noticeable, was the darkness which still filled the realm. Not that grim reapers needed light to see but it was something they were all familiar with so the darkness took a moment to adjust to, which Scarlet did quickly.
"Are we in the right realm?" she asked Severus.
She knew they were in the right realm because it felt familiar but she had to ask anyway.
"Yeah, a lot of things change when one is preparing for war. We are creatures of the underworld, the darkness is where we thrive best." he answered.
Scarlet teleported above to the skies, landed on one of the old trees and stood on it’s branches in desire of a clearer view.
"Get off." A small voice complained and the tree shook, in an attempt to throw her off.
Stunned, Scarlet almost did lose her footing but she regained it quickly. She bent her head and looked from side to side in search of the owner of the voice.
Severus teleported next to her and told her, "It’s the tree itself. Everything in the realm has come alive. If you listen closely, you will be able to feel it. The pulse of the realm is alive, beating like a human heart."
Scarlet did as he said, listening closely and driving her senses deep into the ground in search of the beating heart of the realm. She heard it, loud and strong, pulsing furiously as if it was pumping out energy which reached into the deepest core of her soul. She could feel herself being pulled towards it, like a moth to a flame. It was like a friend she had known forever, or a lover whose hands she was so familiar with. It called to her and she longed to respond.
A warm feeling of energy invaded her stomach and moved around inside, like a comforting hand that was protecting or nurturing the children.
Shocked, Scarlet touched her lower stomach and gasped. "It’s...it’s....." she mumbled.
He knew exactly what she was feeling. "It’s amazing. They say that the pulse is where all of inner core soul energy comes from. It’s the mother of all grim reapers. Every realm has one, but only it’s creatures can feel it. You should be feeling it more than others because of the children."
For a while, Scarlet stayed still and allowed that feeling to wash over her. She waited until it was gone to move again, and teleported back to the ground.
"I am sorry." she shouted to the tree.
There was more that she had seen while she was up there that she wanted to explore. For start, all the rivers of the underworld were no longer in villages. They were out in the open, with grim reapers fighting on top of them or small boats ferrying souls away. They were accompanied by wailing and sounds of lamentation.
"Those are new, right?" She asked.
She would definitely remember if they had always been out in the open like this.
"It’s the fastest way for reapers to grow their strength. Rather than wait in line to register souls, they are put on boats and their fate is decided at the gates while reapers go off in search of other souls." Severus explained.
Scarlet was curious how this worked so she opened her soul gourd. The souls in there were sucked into the air, sent to a bridge and one by one, got into an empty boat on different rivers.
Immediately, Scarlet felt a surge in her soul strength.
"What the...." she whispered.
If they could do this all along then why did they bother with soul registrars, lines and energy crystals? This was better. This was what they should have been doing all along.
Severus could see the wheels turning in her mind and he had a feeling about what she was thinking. He decided to address it before she jumped to the wrong conclusions. "Like I said, strongest way to gain power but it’s also a shortcut that’s why it’s not used usually. This kind of strength dissipates in a few years because it doesn’t bond with your soul, it’s temporary. Like an energy drink which gives you strength for a while but eventually runs out and you go back to your original strength."
Scarlet continued to move her eerie green eyes around, observing more changes in the underworld. Then, out of nowhere from above she heard a scream, one filled with agonizing pain.
